@stevie g thats so true infact you couldnt name them all as it would be at least over 1500 great footballers alone. Since the 1960s. George best was on another level compared to gazza and the greatest player ever! And so was alex higgins on another level in terms of sporting ability! Gazza was good but he wasnt even the best in the english leauge all through the 1990s. The first name that comes to mind is eric cantona, eric was better than gazza. Cantona had more skill, flair, timing, tenacity, vision, he was braver, faster, stronger, remarkable speed of thought, better in the air, better with both feet, better at dribbling, he could read the game better, plus the best of all he was an entertainer. I have to say ryan giggs was also better. If were talking two forwards, two men up front. Then giggs would score more goals and better goals, a mean look at his goals compared to gazza's? Plus giggs free kicks are so much better and scored so much more and from further out. He was much faster, had better control and passing, and thats the same if they played in midfield. Giggs could open up a defence like a can of beans with his passing. Plus theres so many players that i cant remember from that time. Beckham was close? But he didnt dribble as good. The thing is gazza's tackling was bad, he was either to slow or he badly injured alot of men and himself. No gazza was well over rated
R.I.P. Alex....met him the once as a kid....after playing on the next table to him in a club in Accrington...and was awestruck....Genius....Legend.....superlatives that fit this man....PERFECTLY !!! God gave the man a cue to showcase his talent and tenacity......Alex didn't disappoint !!!

A great entertainer capable of great things it's a shame he passed away far to early still he gave us some amazing snooker moments and that is why he will always be remembered as one of the snooker greats a true genius at what he did and will always be remembered in snooker circles
Everyone watching this knows, he was a top snooker player and a great entertainer. We seem to have these traits which we instill in our provincial heroes which involve a great character but some bad habits (true to a lot of people in our island). RIP Alex, you put snooker on the map.
Met him on the Liverpool Ferry heading to Belfast, ended up playing Cards with him along with two Royal Navy guys, he spent the whole time chatting up a bird who didn’t want to know him. I ended up winning £17 of him the other guys won as well, he went back to First Class. A short time later a Stewart asked if we wanted to go continue the game in First Class we said no. I asked why he didn’t fly he said he enjoyed meeting people on the ferry and it was a better way to travel. Headlines in paper next day was Higgins missed charity match, he was on the Ferry when he should have been playing, think a management cock up not his fault

Of all the greats down the years I think only Ronnie O'Sullivan has possessed the creativity and magic in their game that Alex had. The gift that stands out from the uniform, robotic Hendry clones. A wonderful champion.
That was his choice and freedom to do that though. He probably knew he wasn't going to recover, so figured he'd just try to enjoy the little time he had left. He paid more than the cost of his treatments in tobacco taxes anyway. The enormous cost of tobacco products is over 80% tax. Today, the UK earns around £10 billion a year in tobacco taxes, fyi. I imagine all the cocaine and other hard drugs had a big influence on it too though. They reckon Jimmy White's testicular cancer was caused by his heavy cocaine use also.
No player has a divine right to be looked after by the WPBSA as it was at the time. As charming as he was he left and caused trouble everywhere he went that's well known in snooker circles, he is spoke of now in theses reverential terms by ex players but thats all for show.
Yeah, I’ve got the same opinion. He was one of the most talented snooker players ever, but he seemed to have a violent streak in him which negated his charm. It’s kind of hard to hear people say “he was such a nice guy” when you know he physically assaulted numerous people for no reason at all. Alex Higgins was great for newspaper headlines, but I think he must have been terribly difficult to live/deal with. And instead of addressing the truth, you keep hearing the same old euphemisms like “he was such a personality”. He made a death threat against Dennis Taylor. That’s not “personality”, that’s just aggressiveness. He really was one of a kind, but he created his own downfall.
@kristofvandycke6687 yes, it was pretty much impossible to keep your eyes off him in his heyday. His behaviour became tiresome, the same old act that he later took around northern towns/snooker clubs as a bitter ex pro, leaving debts and problems. Still, genius player and definitely magnetic.
@@bonkeydollocks1879 there is a documentary about him i have seen some years ago(u will find it) where his friend talk about it.even his sister who took care of him said, when they brought him food,he would'nt touch it.have a look at the cause of his death in wikipedia.

Great player! But it was a shame no one could understand 1 word he spoke. A can understand why people like george best avoided alex all the time, he must have been hard work. He would say something then take a deep breath with a smile? But i would think what the hell is he saying? I would often turn the tv over after 2 minutes.
