As a kid of the 50’s and 60’s and an avid reader of Hot Rod magazine plus the others, I was very familiar with the MT name and most of his products but I had no idea he’d branched out into designing and building parts this exotic. RIP.
Right?! These guys are like brain surgeons. Engine looks like new! At first I thought it was a W engine with four heads. When you see the block with heads still on, each head looks bigger than the block.
THANK YOU...WHAT A GREAT DESIGN...I EVEN PUT ON AN APPLICATIIN THAT ONE OF MY LOVES IN LIFE WAS HEARING A FINELY TUNED ENGINE RUN...AND THIS LOOKS LIKE ONE OF THEM...JOHN PLAYER SPECIAL WAS A FAV OF MINE...
Very peculiar and fascinating design on those Mickey Thompson heads! Looks wicked with those big Hilborn stacks. Couldn’t have been easy sourcing information and parts for it, Jason Ore did a great job! Excited to see more videos like this from you guys!
That is impressive! Those engines were quite special. I prefer Fords of that era, but all were quite unique. I love unique engines as an aircraft mechanic.
No shrinking violet American Mickey Thompson. Someone had put M/T valve covers on my 454 many years ago, and I wear them proudly. Thompson was a great American innovator.
My father Fritz Voigt was Mickey's Chief Mechanic friend 1959 until 1968. He helped build almost every single engine they raced, but I don't remember my father ever talking about this Indy car monstrosity.
I want to see one of the best drivers in open wheel racing flog the everloving FUCK out of this car on a challenging track. Somewhere like Spa or Watkins Glen or Laguna Seca.
Noooo! I wanted to hear the damned thing! Watching an engine run is one thing, hearing it is the most important part. You can't see what's going on inside an engine when they're running, aside from some novelty vids. The soul of an engine is in the sound. It's how you know it's living. I know it's how an engine affects the physical world through HP, torque and speed for most people but for me the sound is essence of,, sorry, great video and beautiful car. You guys are amazing.
I remember that Mickey Thompson had a shop in the Long Beach California area. My Dad passed it everyday going to work . It was next door to a place that strength tested ropes and lifting slings to see how much they could take before they failed. I think it was on Anaheim St. but since that's been over 50 years ago I just might be wrong about the street name. Mickey's building was a faded baby blue color and it just said Mickey Thompson on the door and nothing else.
You are right about the location. I spent a few summers working for my father Fritz Voigt at Mickey Thompson Enterprises. My dad was Chief Mechanic for Mickey from 1959 to 1968.
I really wish that Formula One would let the teams run whatever they want on the engines, cars, aids. I'd love to see what they would come up with if given absolute freedom.
Closest thing to that is the Pikes Peak cars....AFAIK, for their 'unlimited' class, there are NO rules other than safety equipment requirements. Years ago, I used to help a guy build 440 MOPAR based motors at 14:1 for his Coyote.....man, that was some CRAZY stuff back then when MOST of the run up the hill was gravel. Its ALL paved now, which is sad, really.....
550 hp naturally aspirated 305, not too shabby. I built a high performance 305 once in a 305 vs 350 bet. I'm pretty sure I didn't make 550 hp, but it ran with the 350 it was up against.
In the late 70's top drag racing teams made 550hp+ from 302ci single 4bl carb factory ported and epoxyed cast iron heads.10,000+rpm stick-shift cars on the back bumper always a treat.
My ethnic mate was selling 2 MT tyres in the local buy and sell , he had forgotten about the ad .Later we both went back to his home after the pub . The home phone rings and we hear his mother going nuts . ''Dis boy Mikey Thomson say he live here and they been calling all day''. NO Mikey Thompson live here.
Rats I thought we were going to actually see tear down reassembly and I don’t know cherry on the top with the engine running at the end. Am I the only one that wants to hear this motor run ? Just read some of the comments oh well we’re just gearheads
What would we have to do, in order to be able to hear that BEAST run !? Darn shame to tease a bunch of gearhead with this creation, and not let us hear it talk !!!
For all of you looking to hear this cool engine run... enjoy! Sorry we couldn't include it above. th-cam.com/video/PCGr0IR5ZUQ/w-d-xo.html
Thank you! Love to see more vintage race engines. Smokey twin turbo indy motor comes to mind...
Thanks for yet another shitty video. 😐
And than you have to have a facebook account.... no way! ... keep you sound!
Not everyone is on FB. And, there is no reason you couldn’t have included it in this or other TH-cam videos. Very disappointed.

that's what I was waiting for as well.

What a epic engine. MT was truly a genius.. cars from this period are the most beautiful speedway cars in my opinion

Great Piece of History just wish I could have heard it Run👍🇺🇸
Thank you , for Mickey Thompson toys . Wish yaw showed the heads in detail .
Mickey is a legend. Thanks for something I don’t know about.

Wow,I just found this channel on accident...Good stuff!!!
Mickey Thompson did som radical modifications to engines that were works of art👍

Amazing history.
I am proud that us gear-heads,
rich and poor will go to amazing lengths for our passion
LOVED the look of the old indie cars. Had a little track car track with same cars.
Working on such an engine would be a dream job!
Excellent review of a difficult build!

Not only hear it run but seeing more of the unique parts used. Especially the valvetrain.
he included a Facebook link where you can hear it run for about ten seconds. 😔
What an exotic beauty, love this era and Mickey R.I.P.

Great video, though I anticipated an engine start up to here it, but we’re surprised that they left out the most mportant part of the video.
It would have the the cherry on top to actually listen to this motor run . but I guess were going to have to imagine that ...
It helps when I read the comment about the fire up.

There's a big difference between a 305 and a 302. The bore and stroke of the 302 is much more conducive for building power.
Only Mickey Thompson could make a chevy 305 make 500 plus horse power!
Tom Elliston had a 14,000 rpm sbc 331 made over 1000 hp ?????
Would have loved to hear it run again???
What a work of upper-end art, wow...1.85 horse power per cubic inch 50 years ago. Sure says a lot about cylinder head flow.
Ahhhh...dang it...I really wanted to hear it run...😔
Need to hear it
super cool feature!!!

Any info on Mickey Thompsons 427FE Ford with hemi heads.?

I remember when Richie Zul made a double rocker trick head for a big block Chevy. Wow, that was a long time ago. I think it was in Hot Rod magazine.
Richie zule? Haven't heard his name in years! He was my buddies partner at one time doing r&d for prostock.
Like to hear it running and revving.
Needed to hear it run.
Make darn sure you put the right kind of fuel in before a start. Always run the subject at hand when spouting off about it.
Would love to hear it
There's a year worth of programs like this on Mickey's motors alone....2 cyl. record breaker....hemi-head Ford/Pontiac/Chevy...and on and on.
This guy reminds me of that Todd Grande Psychologist, but for engines 😆🤣
Wouldn't mind hearing it
Would have been nice to hear it run
Any idea what kind of power it makes now, and what the compression and everything is? I'd love to know more about it from a technical standpoint.
500+ horses out of a 305, without 20 computers managing the whole thing... THAT's engineering.
They took a 305 small block made it a three valve I wonder how much time and money it took on the design aspect of just the cylinder heads
Best regards from Brazil. One more subscriber.
we don't get to hear it run?
So seeing it on the dyno not very likely ? Lol 😂 love old American race mechanical history ! Thanks
i cant stop laughing at this dude reading a card...lol

no 5.0 go ?
How many of these engines are out there? what would the closest engine to this be?
NOT your typical 305 Chevy!
Everything different down to the 4 bolt mains and undoubtedly the bore/stroke numbers.
60 over327 with aftermarket 283(3in stroke)crank, that's my guess.
