  • The Mini-14 is a lightweight semi-automatic rifle manufactured by Sturm, Ruger & Co. used by military personnel, law enforcement personnel, and civilians. A .223 caliber (5.56 mm) firearm is made in a number of variants, including: the Ranch Rifle (a basic, civilian variant), the Mini-14 GB, and the Mini Thirty, which is chambered for 7.62×39mm. Introduced in 1973 by Sturm, Ruger & Co., the Mini-14 resembles a smaller version of the military M14 rifle. Designed by L. James Sullivan and William B. Ruger, it incorporated numerous innovations and cost-saving engineering changes. The Mini-14 rifle has an investment-cast, heat-treated receiver and is mechanically similar to the M1 rifle, with a self-cleaning, fixed-piston gas system.

      It was supposed to be a more cost-effective alternative to the M14. Made from mostly cast parts, I believe. Check out Forgotten Weapons' video on it, of you haven't already

    So basically what I'm seeing is that if the first stage of the trigger is removed/ restricted you essentially turn the firearm into a full auto

    So instead of it being a gas piston like it's older brother, they just went with a direct impingememt system! So simple I love it. I want to get me one! I have so many ars, but having something different like this would be awesome!

      The mini isn't DI it has a big piston.

    • @TheNocturnalEvil
      @TheNocturnalEvil 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It's neither a D.I. system nor a true piston based system. It uses a very old gas trap operating system.
      This system was once used on early variants of M1 Garand, but for some reason it was ditched for long stroke piston operation on later variants. It was also used in Gewehr 41.
      The Mini-14 and Mini-30 are truly the last of their kind, because no other rifle uses this system these days.

    I have an early Mini-14, and I can see some differences in the design. For example, mine has a plunger style ejector in the bolt, while this one has a fixed blade ejector. I don't know if either is better than the other.

    This is a very good representation but I must say that the action happens very quickly, much faster than what’s depicted here. This gun has the potential of firing nearly as fast as a fully automatic weapon.

    As a gunsmith, you have no idea how relieved I was when I found out that the Mini 14 was long-stroke instead of short-stroke.
    Short-stroke pistons are usually superior to long-stroke pistons due to how efficient they are with gas, but how the M14 did this was by having a short-stroke piston head and a long-stroke operating rod, meaning what you gain in efficiency you lose in that you have a weight on the front-end of your gun that moves erratically, throwing off accuracy. This is also a problem with basically every .308 rifle the Military has adopted since the 80's, with the only exception I remember being the SR25.
    So, it's nice knowing that Ruger saw the pointlessness of making the Mini14 short-stroke. He still made a massive weight, but at least it's in a way that makes more logical sense.
