    When I was in high school, we used to run in to PNG at marching band contest. We all thought they were fabulous. They weren't "making fun" of Native Americans. The kids that go there try to honor them, and they have remarkable school pride and school spirit. I never had a problem with this. My Dad is a member of the Creek Nation, and my kids and I are in the process of officially joining. They do need to retire "scalp em Indians scalp em" at this point. I agree with that. I disagree with eliminating their entire school culture though. Those kids know far more about Native American culture than the average American school because it is such a part of the town. As someone with a lot of Native American blood in me (two tribes, maybe a 3rd), I'm proud of that.

      A school mascot is not a culture, it is the Native Americans culture and if they sent a letter to politely ask them to stop using it then it shouldn't be questioned. Coming from an indigineous person, this isn't honoring anyone. Plus they probably don't know all that much about Native American culture if they're screaming "scalp em'! scalp em'!"

    When you read about the history as to why they call themselves the "Indians" you start to cringe. PNG chose the Indian as their mascot because long ago 2 Native American tribes lived in the same area as the town. Those tribes were the Karankawa and Atakapa. Both tribes had been wiped out by disease by the year 1780. Neither tribe were anything like the Cherokee which PNG school board says they're supposed to be honoring. They were peaceful river people who primarily fished in the river. As of 1841 there were 6 very large burial mounds in Port Neches each about 60 feet wide and 20 feet tall. Records indicate these mounds were located close to the Neches river around the same location where the High School and football stadium is located today. Between 1841 and 1901 all burial mounds of the Karankawa and Atakapa were destroyed by white people so they could build the town and eventually the school. Now every Friday night whenever there is a football game the white kids who attend the school dress up like native Americans from a tribe that has nothing to do with the area (Cherokee) and perform a made up war dance on a field they call the reservation. The reservation football field was built on the ashes of the Karankawa and Atakapa cemetery. Instead of honoring or mimicking the traditions of the Karankawa and Atakapa river people they instead mock them by reacting stereotypical native American war traditions from tribes that have nothing to do with Southeast Texas area.

      Reading this makes me absolutely furious. The fact that people have the audacity to dance disrespectfully on burial grounds and called the "reservation" makes me absolutely sick. The natives (both ancestors and living) deserve better and to be respected as people. Absolutely disgusting.

      So let me get this straight, a group of people died at a place due to being outgunned in a war (every continent, save Antarctica, has gone through this) rather than honor their legacy by making refrenced to them in modern society you would rather they not be mentioned at all? I would bet a majority of those "white people" who are enrolled actually learned about this decimated and nearly extinct culture through their college education or prior to accepting a scholarship. Blame the son for the sins of their fathers and you would have a lot of other Native Americans who would want them all decimated for the wars fought by their ancestors. We cant change history, but assuming a homage to be a mockery is downright facetious.

    • @rogerarthur1580
      @rogerarthur1580 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Have you or any one brought this information to any of the school officials or city council members? Maybe because, as you say, both tribes were peaceful and the theme behind a school's tradition most of the time is to exhibit or exemplify a predator type mascot and/or name to show they are a (fighting) team to be reckoned with. It's a pride thing to help elevate their competitive stature. Would you like going to a school called the Boston Posies...or the Chicago Tadpoles....or the Nashville Puppies and go to their football games or any other of their team sports events? NO...I doubt it. The team members wouldn't like the names either representing them. They are subjects of competition's that end with one triumphing over another. A team wants that feeling of superiority with a team name that helps them feel that way. It seems like your school is really not honoring the two local tribes of the area and instead using a more notable tribe that had a reputation for "meanness" I, if you want to say it that way. To me, they actually should honor the tribes of the land they have inhabited. It should be an honor to have them as a namesake because of how actually they were an honorable people's. Honor is another big factor for a school to have. It's a shame they didn't found a way to honor the two tribes of their area in the schools name.

That's b******* the indigenous people say it's disrespectful well what about did being disrespectful for a child and tell him they're not good enough to perform or that they're being disrespectful because an adult wrote the chant. Nobody has ever said anything about racism in the history of this school until today when you see a video of the kids at Disney do the best they know how. If you want them to do it differently and you feel you know the correct way then you volunteer your time and come down here and show them how it's done. But I can all but guarantee that's where you will begin to pump your brakes. There just kids. Having fun. And not hurting a soul Leave them alone. And honestly, you should be ashamed of your self.

They set their kids up for this. They know how upset people around the country have been about Indigenous mascots but they kept the mascot doubling down and rolling their eyes at “cancel culture.” Indigenous people have told us for years that this is racist and disrespectful to their culture and downright hurts their feelings so just stop it. Not that hard to pick another mascot. Also, you say no one has ever said anything about racism at your school. Of course not, this looks like a nearly all white school which probably comes from a nearly all white community. You are not playing at another stadium. You are at Disney World. For once you don't have to go chanting down Main Street. Those of us who know PNG know that you have pride. We can't fault you for that. The audition tape didn't include that fight song. One could argue that you submitted it under false pretenses. By all means, if you want to keep the mascot it is your prerogative. Just think of where you were and the times we live in. You could have dropped the fight song for one performance. It would not have killed you. Just FYI - I went to Baytown Lee. We have dropped the use of the Confederate flags and all uses of Dixie. We did successfully fight a potential name change three years ago. I understand tradition. There is just a time and a place for it.

    I think it's a shame that our society keeps finding ways of shoving history under the rug that all of a sudden is called "racist". I don't think I have ever heard anyone degrade or talk foul of the Indian heritage or it's projected influence it has had. In fact, almost all people I know and have known have known, admire the Indian culture and the values and beliefs they had and do have. They were subjected to horrible treatment as much or more than the African Americans were, but always upheld their heads with dignity and fought for their rights even though they were grossly overwhelmed. Many things in "History" have happened...some good...some bad. But these events helped establish our history and way of life and still are. Why are we trying to dismantle these important events that shaped our country into the great country that it is because of the bad things that happened that were, in those times, how things were. Hindsight is for learning...not disregarding. Some are truly worth honoring more than others. And I think Indian heritage and what it stands for is one of many that many people around the world are fascinated with and love learning about it because of their tenacity, strong will and bravery. We can't keep kissing every little Winers foot who complains about something they don't like and considers "racist". We wouldn't have any history making things happen at all if you really think about it. Yes...racism is not good. But too many things are being trapped in that category that are actually just "History" in the making. Wake up everyone. We are being steered down a bad path by a minority.

The mascot dance was taught to the school by the Cherokee tribe. The dance is taken very seriously. The districts slogan is “Honor, Pride, Tradition” to honor the Cherokee nation and land. The students, teachers and community love the traditions. Suddenly, through woke cancel culture, they want to take it away. People need to get on the review on google and write something. This is disgraceful in so many ways. It’s not 1950 and to know scalp em was in the song and still be performing it today is disturbing. GOOGLE REVIEW this school.

    I know this school. It is a very racist school to us Indigenous Americans. Also, this is bad medicine. One does not make "mascots" out of other human beings if one is practicing good medicine.

    Why doesnt WDW cancel Mickey first his early cartoons were racists, then Daisy and her outdated wardrobe. Then put some pants on Donald duck. And Indians did scalp settlers. Are we just trying to re write history here.

      The difference is Disney changed with the times. Texas is still stuck in those tubes desperately clinging to long outdated "traditions". It's sad really.

      How about native Americans form their own group with a white mascot and call themselves the Crackers and chant "irradiate them! Rape their women! Take their land by force!"
      I mean... Those things actually happened right?

    This of course wouldn't have happened years ago when old timers ran the school and system. This is young trash feeding on drama. I dont think much concern would have been given to the school mascot as it was used years ago, but again this s bullship perpetrated by younger people employed by the school district. and the district is only concerned with money.
