We made this recipe this evening and it was a hit with the whole family. I’m gluten free so I just used 1 cup gluten free self raising flour and 1/2 cup of corn flour and it was perfect. Thank you so much to you, your beautiful mum and the team! God bless you!

Tried this today and it was good! I used chicken thighs instead and coated it with corn flour. I also added some cashews and sprinkle some sesame seeds at the end! Served it with rice and Marion's tom yum soup as well. Super yums!

A lot of times, we'll just eat the chicken fried up by itself! The sauce is soo yummy with a local honey, though, and we love love love this recipe.

You can use corn flour for a lighter coating and instead of deep frying you can just shallow fry in a pan. It takes a little longer to cook the chicken by shallow frying but you can save so much oil from being wasted and your house won’t smell like a chip shop afterwards.
Does the addition of egg white changes the result of deep frying? I'd like to skip the extra batter stage but in my experience, light coating of flour is not enough to create the type of crunchy shell you see in restaurant honey chicken nor will it trap as much juice during the frying.
Hello Marion, if you substitute stock for the shiao hsing wine, would it still be the same amount? Thank you for always mentioning good substitute for alcoholic ingredients. I am from the Philippines but my work is in Saudi Arabia. It is difficult to find ingredients here especially if it has the word alcoholic or wine into it. Thanks in advance. 😀

Hi Jen McFarland I have not made this recipe yet but I’ve used cornstarch instead of flour to make a Japanese chicken called Karaaga and it fries up nice and crispy! Hope this helps a little🤷♀️
I finally found the Chinese wine to make this and my fried chicken was Deeeelicious! Light, crispy flavorful. The honey sauce not so much perhaps because I forgot the chicken stock but I still didn't care for the flavor so for me these are just going to be great without the sauce!
I agree wholeheartedly! I think that a chunk of pineapple and a piece of this chicken in the same bite would be like a bit of culinary heaven on a fork! You could even use some of the pineapple juice from the tin in the marinade as a substitute for the Shao Shing Chinese Wine if you do not want alcohol. This is a great suggestion! Thank you.

Or potato flour if you can get it, makes for a very crispy coating.

Sure...just replace it with some chicken stock so you've got the right amount of liquid to get the coating on the chicken just right :-)

That's right! Cornflour (cornstarch if you're in the US) is perfect for this one. Rice flour would also be a good substitute :-)
