All of my brown stems rooted better & about the same time (if not better) than my green stems! But then again I’m in Louisiana & the sun & humidity is probably as close as you’ll ever get to HEL! 😂😂😂🤷♀️
Yes, in Louisiana they grow damn near wild, them, pecan & American persimmon trees, I’ve even found massive fig trees growing in the woods while hunting around Gueydan or fishing by the bayou, but either way I’m with you, the brown cuttings work better. I’ve tried every manner of configurations with soil, water or rooting hormone, still, the brown cuttings have done the best. You get alot of these out of towners here on YT telling us “what’s best” in our own backyards every now & then😂
Uhh idk where you got your info but i have rooted hundreds of lignified cuttings in water and have had 2 failures, probably cause they were too small. I have tried green non-lignified cuttings the same way and i'd say the success rate was less than 50%, the green cuttings have a much higher probability of rotting
My information comes from my own experimentation with roughly 165 different varieties of figs. Every fig is different, some are easier to root than others. I’m very glad you’ve had such success. Thanks for checking the video out! 😀

I have a question and I can’t find an answer anywhere….. it sounds like you both have a lot of experience: I was wondering why the bottom was brown; this is my first fig tree, but I can’t remember if I bought a green or brown fig, and I noticed that there’s a mini-looking fig tree (not just a leaf but with a stem and everything), that sprouted at the very bottom of the fig tree, next to the roots. It’s about 2” and I’m wondering what to do with it … ?! Should I propagate it now ? Thanks ! ; )
This seems like such a great career. You have space to have fun and don't have to worry about getting dirty. In fact, your job is to tend the soil and the plants.
I just did an experiment before seeing your video. I put 0.1ml of Pythoff, and 25mls of multicrop plant starter in a 1.5 litre glass jar with 2 fig cuttings. Pumped air in through a small round airstone into the water. Started Sat evening today Monday afternoon I have root knobs. Less than 48 hrs I have roots.
Not sure if anyone will see this, just got an altreano green stem from a friend, but while it’s producing roots it’s suffering from bottom rot while suspended in water, not sure what to do and any help would be appreciated :)
You’ll want a pretty good cluster of roofs that are about 2-3 inches in length before potting it up. Just a normal potting soil with added perlite for drainage will work
So I’ve got an extremely leggy white honey fig, I’d like to propagate it as it’s become unruly and almost too tall to deal with.. The “original” branch has become woody and doesn’t produce leaves anymore but the offshoot from last spring is growing like crazy and I’d like to create multiple plants from it and hopefully train the offshoot to bush out more, do you think this is possible? I’m in zone 4b Canada so it’s outside all summer and comes in for winter here if that helps at all
@@PlantFanatics I’d say it’s going into its 3rd year with me lol when I purchased it from a smaller plant shop around me I was under the impression it could survive our zone 4b winters with proper maintenance/insulation from snow and quickly learned she girl was wrong so it’s just been brought back and forth inside between seasons - guess I should clarify this leggy branch is green as indicated above in your video
I respect your opinion very much. However, lignified cuttings are not the only type viable for propagation. My degree is in horticulture, and I own a propagation nursery. That being said, there are times to use lignified wood, and there are times to use younger growth. 😀
@@PlantFanatics Personally, I appreciate your knowledge and the fact the video showed actual roots forming ;) I'm just a backyard guy and the materials I get to try to root are often bummed from friends or found tossed out or ... let's just say, I admit to nothing.
My fig cuttings keep making the water turn cloudy and with white stuff like every 2 days, is that normal? I took the greener parts and not the woody stem parts too
Yes, that’s perfectly normal. Just change the water and wash the cuttings with warm water and dish soap. But the water definitely has to continue to be changed on a regular basis. 😀

I’m in New Orleans, the temperature is pretty hot, my preferred temperature is about 80-90°f

North Carolina as well I took a bunch of cuttings green and brown they all spouted in water with hormones

I’ve noticed sometimes it all about the variety too, some root in a three days , some weeks.

Once some roots are established you can scrape the worst of the rot and put in dirt

Growth has to be new growth. As long as stem is flexible and bends without breaking. It should be fine for rooting

Now that i have roots all in the bottom of my jar, should i plant it in soil and keep it in my home since it’s winter here?
It's way faster if you using onion water to stimulate the root growth😏
This is actually wrong, you usually want to take cuttings from lignified (brown) wood.

Any time of year?
Only during active growth. Dormancy is not a good time for this method of rooting.
