Hey. Thanks for tuning in. I'm a little lost on your comment. Could it be unburned 2 stroke oil and not gear oil. You said, "Also I can turn the prop when it's forward or reverse unfortunately. You mean it's not engaging in gear? Is this an outboard you just got or something that just happened on one you've had? LMK Thanks !
Just happened on the one I own. We got out on the water then lost all ability to go forward even though the motor was running just fine. It does seem like an issue with engaging the gears. When the motor is off and engaged in forward or reverse, I can turn the prop by hand. I thought that should hold tight when in gear.
@@brand0nmiller21 Yes it should hold firm and if you turn it hard enough the flywheel should turn while in gear too. When in gear spin the prop and if the prop shaft turns then the gear case is messed up, if the prop just spins and the shaft doesn't, then the prop hub is spun and you'll need a new prop. If the gears are bad its a real pain tearing those gear cases apart and can be very expensive. I found it best to just find a good used one, ebay is a good place to look. But double check all the shift linkage first.
Have a 1980 35hp that if you set it to between the marks the throttle butterfly is nearly closed. Adjusted for butterfly to open at full throttle and it hits 1/2 " right of marks. This confirmes my thoughts. Can you post the bulletin info?
Hey. Thanks for tuning in. The motor should really idle without touching the throttle cam, with the butterfly closed. But sometimes that's not always the case. May be due to slow speed idle circuit not being super clean, worn parts, wrong parts... Anyway some of these old outboards just want to run where they want to run regardless of what the service manual says but having a manual is a good place to start. The cam follower/roller position at full throttle has nothing to do with anything at this point. Once you hit past mid throttle the roller loses contact with the throttle cam as the throttle control arm takes over to open the butterfly to full throttle. The roller stays stationary until you bring the throttle handle back down. It does nothing until you bring the throttle back down and the control arm retracts then the roller takes over and controls the butterfly position back down to idle. The 2 marks on the cam are there for the slow speed timing of the motor. The butterfly needs to open just as the roller is between the 2 marks and you are done! No more need to worry where the marks or roller are at. Now, in Dino's case his motor did not want to run by setting it this way but did want to run by setting it farther up on the cam. He said he cleaned the carb. Anyway thats where the subject of the service bulletin came up. The bulletin was for my 1990 30hp, wasn't meant for 80's models. It's all about the timing, nothing to do with anything else. Your more then welcome to go watch my video about it. Anyway, this was where I suspected parts may have been swapped over the years or something similar to that or that his carb wasn't as clean as he thought. It happens all the time. Nevertheless the motor ran that day where it wanted run. He continued to have problems with it off and on. Constantly trying to dial it in. I would suggest you stay by the book as much as you can. Get an OMC service manual specific to your year/model. Try ebay usually around $30. Make sure that carb is surgically clean! Check out my carb cleaning video if need be. Thanks again & Stay tuned !
@@THISOLDOUTBOARD1 I found out motor wasnt in gear getting wide open throttle to set the throttle plate. I set it wot, in gear and it dropped the roller right in between the marks. Runs good now.
Love your educational videos as always! Sorry I must ask a random QUESTION: I have a electric setup Evinrude 35hp motor with the potential to install a electric primer solenoid on it, the problem is that my current carb does not come with the fitting on top to receive small fuel line coming from primer solenoid, however, I have two other receiving ports--one on the side of the head near main fuel pump, and the other on the block below the carburetor. Could I still run the electric primer solenoid to those two ports (squirting gas straight into the engine chamber instead of through the carburetor top? Im hoping this is possible so I can avoid buying a new carb. Please advise and thank you very much in advance!
Hey. Thanks for tuning in. Yes Dino's motor was set up that way and I've done it before but with using only the port on the intake manifold. The port on the block below the carb at the very bottom of the block should be for the oiling line going up to the connection under the flywheel to oil the top crank shaft bearing. I don't want you to get that mixed up with the intake port. If need be, go to marineengine.com and look up your year/model and check the schematic. Thanks again & Stay Tuned !
Hey. Thanks for tuning in. Dino is a friend of mine, anyway the service bulletin was for the year 1990 30hp Johnson I had. If you go to my channel you should find a couple of videos I did with the 90 30hp Service Bulletin. You just want to adjust it so the roller move up on the throttle cam not backwards. And thats done with the idle speed adjustment screw on the linkage. The service bulletin didn't apply to Dino's 80's model 30 horse, but we tried it and it seemed to help. Thanks again !
Hope you’re doing well. Do you have videos of testing power packs on 25hp Johnnyrudes ? Having difficulties with a 96 evinrude 25. I would swap it out but it’s a 5 pin and I only have older 4 pin models.
Is it hit or miss on having to make that adjustment?Reason I ask is when I converted my 1985 20hp to 30hp by carb. and intake swap it dialed right in and roller is set up between two marks.Just wonder what makes the difference.?
Hey. It's hard to say. Your 85 20, I just picked a basic model, His 84 30 and my 93 30 all use the same cam part number. BUT, there's that big but! My 30 gives 3 separate part numbers for the 20, 25, & 30 and all say "only". When I compared my black 30hp cam to my white 89, 25 tracker cam and lined up the bolt holes, 2 different part numbers, the black 30 cam marks were slightly advanced compared to the white 25 cam. In the video, I said, we set the cam almost back to where it was when he first got it, which would've been around fast start position, after watching the video, it really wasn't that far. If you look at the video from the scene I used for the thumbnail you can see where it was actually set. I hope this makes sense! Hahaha. For some reason I thought it was set much higher. BUT. There's that big but again! Taking into consideration we only had a few hour to figure this thing out when it usually takes a few days and the damn thing running cold as a cucumber with no thermostat, and trying to beat the rain/lightning. It's just hard to say. Anyway, I just took a shot at it and that's just where the damn thing wanted to run! Hahaha. He really needs to put a thermostat in it and a couple other things need done too. At least he's back on the water for now! Thanks again !
Hey. Thanks for tuning in! I believe it will, my 92 60 uses the same control/cables as the 87 40 I had. Best to check each model on marineengine.com and see if they use the same cables. That way you'll be sure. Thanks again !
Hello sir I have a question,at 11:21 water is flowing out the exhaust ports, what would it mean if water wasn’t flowing out,I have a 1986 15hp evinrude new impeller pees like a bull, but no water from the exhaust exit ?
Hey. Thanks for tuning in. The water should come out as soon as the motor reaches operating temperature and the thermostat opens. That way you know the thermostat is working. I remember on an older 15 the faster I went the less water would come out. Found out later from an old OMC mechanic that it was normal on those old outboards. Take your thermostat out and test it or replace it, also once it's out fire up the motor and let the water flow out for a minute just to check the water passageways are not clogged. Thanks again & Stay tuned !
I was having a similar idle issue on my newly acquired yamaha 90tlra and it ended up being an oil injection line was rubbing against the governor linkage so the butterflys wouldn't close all the way. It took me days to realize that problem
@@THISOLDOUTBOARD1 I went out on the chain o lakes today. Launched at the state park, hooked around blarney Island and took a channel into Lake Marie. There's a big loop you can do up on the north end of the chain and it's very scenic....we were taking my mother on a nice boat ride today. As soon as I throttled it up I heard a banging so I killed it and pulled the cover off the outboard (yamaha 90tlra) I'm sure it was my fault but the key sheared in half on the flywheel, yamaha calls it the stator assembly. So I got that figured out and got it running again and the flywheel spun and the engine died. Went to take it off again and it was tight on the shaft. Gave it a yank and in the water it went lol. Muddy murky bottom, it's only 5 feet but people die getting stuck in there. I have a johnson 25 that runs good but sometimes when I hit the throttle it does nothing. Run the throttle back to idle hit it again nothing. Have to move throttle wide open and back to idle a few times then all of a sudden it revs fine. Very intermittent. Can't figure it out!
@@timbiffis6306 sorry I haven't had a chance to mess with it again yet. It doesn't make sense to me what it's doing. Hope to get time to play with it again soon tho.
@@owensbama1923 I installed new coils today and the motor runs and idles perfectly now. Acceleration is on point. Not sure if it's your issue, but you never know. Hope you get yours figured out also
If he keeps running that thing without a thermostat his rings are going to stick (which may be one reason it's not running as it should now). Regardless, the stuck rings will quickly cause scored cylinder wall(s), and then the motor will need a rebore and oversize piston(s). But I'm sure nobody will believe that either........... It should run at about 140 degrees (F) at the thermostat cover.
There are reasons the engineers design the motors the way they do. Problem is, weekend warriors tend thin they know better. Thanks for your input and knowledge.
Ol boy at OM Fishing is where I seen on how to to adjust the cam follower and the cam roller or some shit like that. The bulletin in it was for a low idle cough or sneeze again some shit. Which I went 1/4 past the marks and that is when my roller starts to lift, but it still has a chronic weed cough but at the same time I noticed that off my fuel pump a line drops outta it to a plastic 90 with a barb and a 5/32 fuel line off of it. But at that junction of the 90 is always wet and when I lay in2 the primer bulb it douches out a lil bit of fuel. Do you think that could be contributing to my high idle cough? Any help is appreciated cause imma bout ready to deep six this motherfucker. Along w/ my fucking 2013 Etec Evinrude 25 hp (I bought new)with its violent shake at an idle and won't even come close to comin to plane out if you can even get the cocksucker to take off. And my cheap ass can't afford to pay the dealer which is 80 miles away cause our river town ain't shit and got a camper dealer that will fuck yo shit up worse than draining ur lower unit and doing a full day of time trials / no smokes. I really don't no shit from Apple butter about timing and thus newer computer bullshit. Fuck I feel a shit ton better after spewing all these good times I'm having. Thanks
Hey. Thanks for tuning in. Yes, I remember him doing a video right after I did mine. The service bulletin was told to me by a very well known OMC mechanic. It was for my 1990 30hp Johnson. It was a quarter to a half inch on the setting. Not sure what all years/models it pertained to though, so it may not work for your year/model. If your not sure then I would start fresh at factory settings. A sneeze or cough is usually caused by a lean condition at the slow speed carb needle setting, not from the cam follower and timing, although what may seem like a fuel issue can be ignition and vice versa. Hard to say without hearing it run. A too rich setting and the motor will want to cough and die. Yeah I hate those P.O.S. fuel line connectors. I don't think it is affecting the idle, they just like to leak. You may want to think about picking up a couple of manuals specific to your years/models. It sure makes things easier and will save you a lot of time, they have a great troubleshooting section too. Try ebay for good used ones. Thanks again for tuning in and I'm glad your feeling better!
For the love of God people put your outboards in a water filled garbage can when testing. Then you can test idle under load in gear & verify the water pump is good.
@@jimmyhoffa7935 correct, there's no load in a barrel that I've ever seen. I've probably had 7-8 people in the last month alone ask me why their outboard runs great in the tank but not on the water. I tell them all the same thing, could be a dozen different reasons why and recommend they get a manual specific to their year/model and look at the troubleshooting section rather then spend hours online with videos and those stupid boat forums, I've really come to hate those forums, everybody has an opinion but nobody ever has the answer. What works for one person may not work for another, big waste of time. We put the motor in the barrel for two reasons, one, the motor wasn't getting any water to the powerhead and two, I hate those frikkin things with a passion! They're Junk, all they do is flood the place! Why we ever put them on I have no idea. Thanks for tuning in!
Tanks are better than damn 'muffs', but not like in the actual water. And a fool can burn an outboard up with a tank if they don't keep an eye on the tank temp. Friend had a 'race car motor builder' that supposedly could fix any motor. Ran that 4-cycle so long in the barrel you could of used it for hard boiled eggs.

The sayings Dino is commenting in this video is what’s wrong with people who don’t take the time to know what’s expected, this is across the board, whether it be maintenance and repairs on your outboard or boating ETIQUETTE, there’s a reason for it all, it’s starts with SAFETY. You have to consider when running a boat that’s running correctly that you can cause a huge issue, even near the launch, where you can affect lives of others or your own. Yes, it’s a thermostat today, yesterday was a throttle cable, regardless of what it is, treat it as if your life depends on it, because your motor could and usually does break at the most unreasonable time that can cause catastrophe. I hate being around people that want to wing it or that’s good enough, bc usually somewhere down the line, it’ll affect me or you in some way, wasting time because someone else’s BS of “GOOD ENOUGH!”

@@THISOLDOUTBOARD1 had a feeling that was the case but we'll dig around a little more before going with a replacement.

@@THISOLDOUTBOARD1 Okay thanks a lot schematics are always a good way to verify before blowing up haha
Dino do you have a video about the service bulletin on the 30hp and how to adjust it 1/4 to 1/2 back?
Yea I have a 1995 30 hp and it is doing it. Who’s channel do I go to to see it?
Hope you’re doing well. Do you have videos of testing power packs on 25hp Johnnyrudes ? Having difficulties with a 96 evinrude 25. I would swap it out but it’s a 5 pin and I only have older 4 pin models.
Hey. Thanks for tuning in. No I sure don't. Sorry.
Love it keep up the good work
Thanks again ! Give me a haller !
Excellent
Thanks for tuning in!
I have a ? Will a 1997 vro60 johnson fit in place of my 1988 johnson 40? Any differances in cables and controls?
Hey. Thanks for tuning in! I believe it will, my 92 60 uses the same control/cables as the 87 40 I had. Best to check each model on marineengine.com and see if they use the same cables. That way you'll be sure. Thanks again !
@@THISOLDOUTBOARD1 ok Thank you alott
@@THISOLDOUTBOARD1 Thanks a lot appreciate it.
You the man
Hey man. Was just thinking about you guys a little while ago. Thanks for tuning in!
Fuel filter or fuel lines/pickup or both. I was wrong.
I was having a similar idle issue on my newly acquired yamaha 90tlra and it ended up being an oil injection line was rubbing against the governor linkage so the butterflys wouldn't close all the way. It took me days to realize that problem
Hey. Thanks for tuning in.
I know what you mean!
I let it go didn't jump in. $780 for a new one on boats website but I got one on the way already for $80 off ebay with the same part number. Hope it works out. Thank God for good friends, my buddy happened to be out with his family and towed me literally into the dock at the launch. I never touched an oar.
Just thought my day might give you a good laugh. I know better than to take the nut off before the flywheel is loose. I don't know why I did it, it just one of those things. I'll be out there again by Saturday.....qualified

I have a johnson 25 that runs good but sometimes when I hit the throttle it does nothing. Run the throttle back to idle hit it again nothing. Have to move throttle wide open and back to idle a few times then all of a sudden it revs fine. Very intermittent. Can't figure it out!
Did you get it figured out.
Mine has the same problem

@@timbiffis6306 sorry I haven't had a chance to mess with it again yet. It doesn't make sense to me what it's doing.
Hey. Yes. Hope he reads your comment ! Thanks again !

It's not fuel, filter, plugs which you got to buy a fuckin bakers dozen 2 get a couple to fuckin index correctly.
Make sure you don't have a newer gas tank because it will not be able to pull gas
Hey. Thanks for tuning in! Yeah big pain in the azz! Thanks again & Stay tuned !
For the love of God people put your outboards in a water filled garbage can when testing. Then you can test idle under load in gear & verify the water pump is good.
I did. Thanks for tuning in.
@@jimmyhoffa7935 you stupid fuck. You can idle in gear & Rev it up in gear, water muffs are for flushing at best.
Tanks are better than damn 'muffs', but not like in the actual water.
And a fool can burn an outboard up with a tank if they don't keep an eye on the tank temp.
