    These short films are wonderful. I am an American with a lifelong interest in Norway. Up until this point i have found it very difficult to find this kind of basic historical information in English - so, these are tremendously helpful in nourishing our collective wonderment! And, they are extremely well done. The slower pace is very much appreciated. Hats off to you for this work so well done. Keep them coming, but avoid the catastrophic mistake of working too hard. All the Best from the North Peacham Highlands, Vermont, usa.

    I'm reading "Sult" and this is helping a lot to picture lifestyle and urban scenery, thank you!! :)

      I highly recommend watching the Norwegian film "Sult" from 1966, recorded in areas of Oslo that kept their housing and architecture from Hamsun's time.

    Very interesting. I hope you do a piece on Akershus festning itself.

    I am from India and currently visiting Olso with my family. We were amazed by the city. There is something enigmatic about it. Would love to explore the past remains of the 19th century Oslo. Let us know id you have any ideas

    If you ever make a video about Fredriksten fortress, besieged 6 times and where Charles XII died, it would be very interesting.
    Could later make a small series about the influence of the northern war on Norway f.ex.
    Or not, I'll be watching anyways. :)

    This was so interesting. My wonderful step-father was from Olso, but I was too young and stupid to care to ask him questions about his life in Norway. He died ten years ago and I miss him terribly. Takk skal du ha from Minnesota!

    When was the name changed from Christiania to Oslo? Why was it changed? Where did the name "Oslo" come from and what does it mean?

    • @NorthernHistory
      @NorthernHistory  23 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Oslo was the medieval name of the town, so after the split with Denmark it increasingly became more popular to go back to an older place name. Oslo comes out of old norse I belive, and is another name for an godly place by the water (os - aesir lo-a place by the river/estuary)

    When did the city start being called Oslo? Or is that just what English speakers call it, and Norwegian speakers still say Christiania?

    • @NorthernHistory
      @NorthernHistory  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      1925 onwards its name was Oslo. Before its name was Kristiania (we dropped the «ch» in the end of 1800s).

    Det du forteller meg er det jeg ønsker mene å ha forstått. At den handlende eliten tok med seg frihetlig kunnskap...fra 1776 og 1789 og selvfølgelig før det, og så var vi så lykkelig fattet at en frihetlig fra BEARN var så klar i nøtta (kanskje flaks) at vi slapp 1666Danmark - Å som jeg elsker å dusteeksemplifisere historiske greier. - En kjær mystisk hobby.
