- Sumer Is Icumen In ('Summer Is a-Coming In' / 'Summer Has Arrived') is a mediaeval English song dating from at least the 13th century. It is an early example of a round, which has singers interweaving multiple melodies to create a richly textured song.
There is some academic dispute over the translation of 'bucke uerteþ'. Here we used the most common translation - 'billy-goat farts' - but an alternative translation - 'stag cavorts' - has been proposed.

Oh wow, you're right! I don't think it's exactly the same, but The Mending Song definitely sounds like it borrowed heavily from it.
If the goat farting is in fact the correct translation, I wonder if it was just a matter of fact statement like the cow lowing etc, or if it was deliberate humor? I imagine farts are something humans have always found funny.

A beautiful, but extremely eerie folksong. I'm not sure if I'm alone in my certainty that there is something more hidden in the lyrics and the melody....something spiritual and powerful. Be it Christian or otherwise. The song holds power.
I like this song a lot, but I have to kind of disagree with you there. It seems like a pretty perky, happy go-lucky sort of song to me, nothing eerie or spiritual. But hey, that's just my opinion :)

Do native English speakers understand this song?
No not really at all. It's not the best example though, as it's using language we wouldn't expect to hear i.e. singing cuckoo about a cuckoo, and the poetic lines about farm animals that we're not familiar with, it sounds almost like a nonsense song to us. Also, there are a few letters used that most people wouldn't even know how to pronounce.
There is however plenty in the general sound of the words, that with a bit of extra context we would understand, but just not fluently.
