    day 10, no more headaches or dizzyness. Still waking up like an idiot at 5AM for no reason. Appreciating my new life without cigarettes!

    I have a profanity filter on my channel. A post was just put up that I am going to edit out words that are not allowed by the filter. Wanted to be able to respond to the person's post:
    Josh Belcher 18 minutes ago · Automatically held
    So I’m on day 8 and came here out of desperation because I’m seriously tweekin! LOL
    I can honestly say this has been the most difficult day hands down. The first week was rough, but I felt VERY confident that I could do this until today.
    I KNOW I can do this, but today is rough for some reason. I’ve wanted a cigarette for the better part of the day. It’s been my primary focus all day.
    Here’s the thing though:
    I’m sick of the smell. I’m sick of SMELLING like cigarettes and making my apartment smell like them too. I’m tired of “going outside” or interrupting a conversation or even being distracted by my addiction. I’m tired of coughing when I laugh really hard and basically ruining the entire moment with my disgusting hacking... which sometimes makes mucus shoot out of my throat. Gross.
    I’m sick of feeling sick and drained all the time. I’m sick of feeling this fear of lung cancer, emphysema and COPD. I imagine what it would be like for a doctor to tell me I have lung cancer and I swear to god I’d be SOOOO angry at myself.
    I’m sick of how expensive it is and I’m sick of being a bad example for my niece and nephew (I don’t smoke around them, but they know I smoke and it makes them sad.
    I’m sick of contributing to the wealth of an evil industry that has caused countless millions to suffer and die needlessly. I’m sick of making that monstrosity stronger and keeping it alive by sacrificing my health to it. I’m sick of being out of breath on the treadmill and KNOWING I’m on my way to a sad disgusting death that I am only bringing on myself.
    I’m sick of people looking at me like an idiot. I’m sick of MINDLESSLY AND FOOLISHLY lighting up YET ANOTHER cigarette KNOWING it’s destroying me little by little.
    Good luck to everyone here and reply if it helps you get through a craving. This entry took about 20 minutes, but that was 20 minutes WITHOUT a cigarette and that’s SOMETHING.

    Just realized this video is so old. Like 13 years, soon 14, and a lot of what this man is saying stands true because they're facts. And I only found it a couple of months ago on TH-cam and this channel has been incredibly helpful. I'm now entering my 2nd week a 2nd time (relapsed last time in my 12th day). I believe I've worked out some psychological facts and factors surrounding this addiction in my case. It is an addiction... for only an addiction can make you do so many unreasonable things thinking they're reasonable. It's a channel I often revisit the videos of whenever I feel the need to, because honestly Joel, you provide reassurance and a sort of tough love to the audience who is genuinely interested in quitting. I know I've said thank you under other videos, but I will probably continue to do so with each video that I think helped me considerably, or simply whenever I feel the need to show gratitude that a channel like yours exists for people like me who don't have access to a quit clinic, or a quit support group, or perhaps not enough empathy or support from peers.

    • @joelspitz
      @joelspitz  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Coming to the realization and understanding that what you are fighting is a true addiction is really the key piece of information that a person needs in order to successfully quit and stay free over the longterm. These pages address this issue:
      whyquit.com/joels-videos/were-you-addicted/
      whyquit.com/joels-videos/how-long-does-it-take-to-become-re-addicted-to-nicotine/
      whyquit.com/joels-videos/can-taking-a-break-from-smoking-help-you-get-rid-of-nicotine-tolerance/
      whyquit.com/joels-videos/the-law-of-addiction/
      As far as for the video being so old, it was based on material I used in my clinics that started back in the mid 1970's. To me, the videos still seem to be new. On Internet based resources, they really do seem old now.
      As far as for not having access to support groups or clinics, that may very well be to in any given person's ability to quit. The page whyquit.com/joels-videos/are-people-doomed-to-fail-if-they-dont-get-professional-help-to-quit-smoking/ addresses this issue.
      As always though Bianca, I am glad to have been able to help. To stay reinforced over the long-term now, consider slowly going through the resources on the following two page--I think they can help make this the last quit you will ever have to go deal with:
      whyquit.com/joels-videos/videos-related-to-the-implications-of-a-puff-once-you-have-quit/

      You are very welcome dansyn96. That really is a key piece of understanding for many people to make quitting much less intimidating than it often is for people who are convinced that smoking calms then down. Here are several pages that address the issue from a few different angles:
      whyquit.com/joels-videos/smoking-does-not-help-you-overcome-stress/
      whyquit.com/joels-videos/the-fear-of-success/

      And congratulations on day eight. Any thoughts you have from now on are more from trigger circumstances than from any kind of need for nicotine. The page whyquit.com/joels-videos/difference-between-physical-and-psychological-urges/ explains this important issue. To help keep this quit secure over the long-term check out the resources on the page whyquit.com/joels-videos/videos-related-to-the-implications-of-a-puff-once-you-have-quit/. The video atop the page explains how to best utilize these resources.

    Hey Joel it’s bin officially 7 days without nicotine and I just wanted to say thank you and I wanted to tell you about how amazing of a person you are you truly change lives if it wasn’t for you I never could have gone thru with quitting everyday I looked forward to watching you’re videos and I went Day 6 not even thinking at all about smoking and barely thought about it at all. One quick story I wanted to share was on day 5 I held my juul in my hand and was about to hit it and I was thinking in my head it’s just one hit and I had remembered seeing ur video just one more and I watched it started crying and threw my juul in the trash U ARE THE MAN AND A LIFE SAVER LITERALLY! U are a hero and I hope one day I can change peoples lives for the better like you! A true inspiration

    • @joelspitz
      @joelspitz  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Congratulations on seven days ChildishB. I am very glad to have been able to you with your quit. I do however want to make sure that you know that you should take the real credit for your having successfully stopped and for then staying off over the long-term. Here is a page that I actually set up a few days ago addressing this issue:
      whyquit.com/joels-videos/i-couldnt-have-done-it-without-you/
      As far as for having tossed the Juul, that was a very important move. Here are a few pages addressing that issue:
      whyquit.com/joels-videos/keeping-nrt-in-case-of-emergency/
      whyquit.com/joels-videos/keeping-cigarettes-to-deal-with-stress/
      whyquit.com/joels-videos/finding-cigarettes/
      While the second two links refer to cigarettes as opposed to other forms of nicotine, the bottom line is that when fighting a nicotine dependency there is no real difference between cigarettes, other tobacco products, electronic cigarettes or pharmaceutical nicotine replacement products--they all deliver deliver nicotine and the all can result in a full blown relapse. All of the links on the page whyquit.com/joels-videos/videos-related-to-the-implications-of-a-puff-once-you-have-quit/ are applicable to Juuls or any other form of nicotine delivery.
      Again, I am glad to have been able to help and if you have any other questions or concerns please don't hesitate to get in touch.
      Joel

      You are very welcome Johan. I am glad that you found my resources helpful and that you were able to help another person to quit too. As far as for having never joined my clinic--the vast majority of people who I have tried to help online have never been in any of my clinics. I stopped doing clinics many years ago--one of the reasons being that once I had the materials online I didn't feel the clinics were necessary. My page whyquit.com/joels-videos/why-i-no-longer-conduct-stop-smoking-clinics/ explains this issue. Since you are helping others now, check out these resources:

      Stress can easily cause you to want a cigarette but the reason that you want the cigarette is because of the perception that taking it will help you to alleviate the stress. See the page whyquit.com/joels-videos/smoking-does-not-help-you-overcome-stress/ that explains why this belief is a false perception.

      Congratulations on getting through your first week Scott. Many people find that they are not going to get understanding or support from all people around them when they quit smoking. The bottom line though is you should not be quitting for other people but rather for yourself. You are the primary benefactor of your quit. The resources on the page whyquit.com/joels-videos/the-importance-of-quitting-for-yourself/ address this issue as well as problem that you may encounter with others when quitting and what you can do about some of them.

    Joel you are a truly blessed soul and thanks so much for your work in this field and all you have done for us who need help in quitting smoking. Your work is remarkable and I am truly forever grateful to you, your videos have kicked up something in me that no nicotine gum/patch/lozenge, pill, ecig or any other non cold turkey method was ever able to do and I cannot thank you enough. Much Love Joel & God Bless You My Dear Friend

    • @joelspitz
      @joelspitz  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank for your kind comment k redz and you are welcome. Yes all of those methods were just finding new ways of delivering nicotine and thus prolonging withdrawal as opposed to actually ending it. The page whyquit.com/joels-videos/prolonging-nicotine-withdrawal/ addresses this issue. On top of this, these products by themselves do not give the smoker any real understanding of what he or she is dealing with regarding addiction. The page whyquit.com/joels-videos/why-do-smokers-smoke/ hits home that point. Without understanding the addiction it is hard for people to really appreciate the one key concept of what they need to do to sustain their quits once if they ever get one started, which is of course to understand why if they want to keep their quits over the long-term they must always remember to never take another puff. (see the page whyquit.com/joels-videos/videos-related-to-the-implications-of-a-puff-once-you-have-quit/)

      Congratulations on getting to day 2 Vince Johnson. Get through the next couple of days and things will really ease up. It may also not take the full three days. See the page whyquit.com/joels-videos/the-importance-of-the-first-three-days-of-your-quit/ that explains why the 72 hour period is really a pivotal time.
      I noticed that you are responding to the video "Starting the second week of your quit." If you have not already gone through the daily videos as in day one, two, three, etc., consider doing those now or else just going through the resources on the page whyquit.com/joels-videos/can-you-spare-about-an-hour-and-a-half-to-help-to-save-your-life/. Jumping right to the latter day videos will miss a lot of information that can really help to secure your quit over the long-term. I’m finding days 8 and 9 waaaaay harder than days 1 to 4

    • @joelspitz
      @joelspitz  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello James:
      There are different issues that can be at play right now. First I need to ask you if you have been off of all forms of nicotine for nine days now, not just off of smoking. Many people write me who say that are off "smoking" for some specific time period but who are have been using alternate forms of nicotine delivery. The page whyquit.com/joels-videos/prolonging-nicotine-withdrawal/ addresses this issue.
      Now assuming that this not the case and that you are indeed off of all nicotine for the entire nine days, another issue may be at play--specifically that your day eight and nine happened to be on Christmas Eve and Christmas day. The first holidays often having unique situations occurring that can cause issues for many people. The pages whyquit.com/joels-videos/holiday-related-resources/ addresses this issue.
      Also check the page whyquit.com/joels-videos/thoughts-for-cigarettes-that-may-seem-worse-than-when-first-quitting-smoking/ for possible issues.
      You didn't specify what you mean by harder. In the event that you are talking about some kind of physical symptoms that are worsening, check out the page whyquit.com/joels-videos/life-goes-on-without-smoking/.
      Let me know if any of these situations seem to be applicable to what you are saying about things being harder now.
      Joel

      @Honeymoonwhispers 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Joel Spitzer
      Thanks for the lengthy response. I have been off nicotine altogether for nine days. I have had severe withdrawals for the last two days. Far worse than any day beforehand. I don’t think Christmas is of any significance as I have been on holiday since 10 December.
      Thanks

    • @joelspitz
      @joelspitz  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well being on holiday can also cause lots of different trigger circumstances--being that it is your first time on holiday as a former-smoker. One page that touches on this kind of situation is whyquit.com/joels-videos/how-holidays-that-result-in-three-day-weekends-effect-recent-ex-smokers/. But what you are saying here is that you were having "severe withdrawal." I am assuming you are referring to some kind of adverse physical symptoms and if this is indeed the case be very careful writing off any or all physical symptoms to having recently quit smoking. Check out the resources on the page
