Hi Lili, make sure the rectangle and text box are both selected, the *Shape Format* tab will appear. In the *Insert Shapes* group, you can select *Merge Shapes*

There was no merge shape option in my power point (2010 version) but I found the combine shape option and added it. Yet still can't use it for some reason

I think the option is only available in newer versions of PowerPoint: 365, 2019 & 2016
