I think a combination of his natural personality and his upbringing have made a unique character. Everybody talks about how naturally humble and generous he is but he played like an animal at times. He was one of those players that West Ham fans still revere. In football, there's only one Mad Dog and you'd fancy him against anyone.
Hell of a comparison. Not sure if he'd murder anyone but can see him being two personalities. Really like the guy but wouldn't piss him off. Tough love is a thing.
Very eccentric guy but in an endearing way when he relaxes. You can sense he is a class act because he looks at and responds to, all 3 of the lads, unlike quite a few guests that seem to ignore at least 1 of them during their interviews
@@undrthecosh Yeah, he's a very unique character. Has a perspective on the game that is definitely not from the book of cliches. Love the unassuming way he refers to 'my cousin' Clive Allen . FFS, it's CLIVE ALLEN, mate!!! If you know football you know Clive Allen. His self-deprecation at how well-known his family is in football is very revealing. A humble man, who always sounds grateful for everything football has given him. Great interview Under the Cosh.
Went to Martins Soccers School back in the late eighties, top bloke he even gave me and my mate a lift to Uxbridge train station as we had no money for a bus fare
What an absolute legend. My favourite all time manager at Brentford. Made the players go in the stands at Notts forest before the game and played musical chairs with them. Without the music lol.
It's a shame managers like Martin are never given a chance in higher divisions. From what I've heard on these podcasts hes an incredible man manager. I'd like to see him at Swindon until the end of the season
Martin was 1 of 6 players signed by Lou Macari. Those 6 players formed the backbone of the club for the best part of a decade. It should be spoken about more. Martin always put a good shift in for West Ham and was very much appreciated by us all. Mad as a box of frogs then and seems just as bonkers now. Best to of wishes to him.
23mins in and cant help but comment whatta BELTER this is and so interesting having a manager on of a player that has been on too. Great work as always lads 💪
A true legend and a Scholler, I could listen to your stories all day mega brilliant its was 8 years today 20th April 2013 that you won the league 2 as worthy champions loved you as a player ( what I can remember) but even more when you took our a little tiny club to league 1 amazing scene amazing year, meet you at Morecombe coming back on the train with the players and the end of season game you had the dog in the dugout at Burton last game of the season wonderful memories. Glory Glory Gillingham FC and we still march on. God Bless you Martin best wishes to all your family
It's all an act - he's a top man I'm sure! I went to every game during his era and the crowd absolutely loved him - people used to howl in the crowd like mad dogs and he loved it
I’d only ever heard his name in passing, wasn’t he on like an album or singles cover? Super Furry Animals maybe? He’s deffo flipping somebody off or something like that
I was waiting on him coming out with ....shirt always be out...like robin Friday..wear the long shorts like robin Friday..wear long sleeves like robin Friday and when I was young I used to go robbin every Friday 😭😭⚽️
Cant wait for part two, such a funny guy, you can see why a team would love his weird ways on a week to week basis. He should team up with Dicano, management dream team.
That was awesome. Expected a really boisterous one, but what an eccentric character....and those "death stares!!" Never expected S Club 7 and Abba being sung in the first few minutes either!!
I remember him. I was QPR youth. Still remember Dave Clement and his talk to me when they let me go. Guys keep up the the good work. Really like your Chanel. Strange to quote from another former Hammers player, "It's a funny old world football is" Listening to this show makes me think "If only I could have...." I might well have played with my schoolboy hero Trevor Francis...it was not to be though..
Ah boys thanks for that, martin allen one of my favourite football people.bravo bravo bravo.poor chrissy was afraid to open hes mouth😅brilliant interview 👊👊
This is a tough one to draw a clear conclusion on. He was brought up to be excessively aggressive possibly because he was small and his father wanted to compensate for his lack of natural ability but then from somewhere, perhaps through experiencing different managers, he discovered leadership and intellectualising solutions to problems. I know personally that it’s not easy to explain why the ‘mad dog’ mists descends and it might be invoking primeval ‘fear or flight’ chemicals but you could probably get away with a certain level of violence then. I’d really like to understand what it was that drove the violence into his playing style. It can be just wanting to be the best and he mentions this but to sustain that level of commitment is difficult and it’s interesting to consider that he probably wanted to make his father proud especially with other ‘star’ players in the extended family. I’d love to see him talk to players first hand.
Excellent guest . I find the three of them get the best out of their guest's when they allow the guest to talk and not talk over them or litter the podcast with their own juvenile stories (Parkin) Martin Allen comes across very well. Intelligent , interesting and funny . Good podcast 😉
BRILLIANT!
Just piggybackin' on your comment, any footy heads should look into Robin Friday, there's a couple of books about him, what a character.
A very strange but brilliant man. It's like an interview with a serial killer
😂
😂😂😂

I like the way this man offered to help the interviewer when he said he had a tough time with lockdown. Nice seeing helpful.people in a selfish world.

Were I a chairman, Allen is just the type of guy I'd hire, shades of Cloughie of Malcolm Allison IMHO....
Went to Martins Soccers School back in the late eighties, top bloke he even gave me and my mate a lift to Uxbridge train station as we had no money for a bus fare
RedTube absolutely cracked me up
When he said Redtube instead of TH-cam I lost it. Brilliant interview.
Went to a soccer school run by him in pompey years ago . He had all the mums doing headers as they picked there kids up .they hated him 🤣
Haha he did the same with us in London. Told my dad he was on the podcast and the first thing he said was “ those fucking headers” 😂
What an absolute legend. My favourite all time manager at Brentford. Made the players go in the stands at Notts forest before the game and played musical chairs with them. Without the music lol.
Lloyd Owusu talks about this! Fantastic
Utterly brilliant. What a bloke. Love this man.

I'd of definitely taken Martin Allen at Swindon this season we'd of put up more of a fight with mad dog in charge.

He was a great guy
Love Martin from his West Ham days, he is such a delight to listen to, this is my number one episode 🙏⚽
Good to see the original Mad Dog still wearing claret and blue!!!!!!!!

Another cracking episode, Do we really have to wait for part 2, wack it on tomorrow 👍😀
You'd want to play for Martin Allen 😂
I feel like there’s a musical theatre dancer inside of him dying to get out
Football manger the musical 🎶
Definitely mate. Regional touring cast, belting show tunes after school, dreaming of the West End

Mad Dog Podcast would be amazing.
I love how Martin tells a story. Loved him at Brentford. Great show lads
Another brilliant one. Can't wait to see part 2. Good honest bloke 👍👍👍
Just watched a West ham video of all his goals. The boy could play
Robin Friday, the greatest player you’ve never heard of. Fascinating guy and worth looking up especially the book about him.
I’d only ever heard his name in passing, wasn’t he on like an album or singles cover? Super Furry Animals maybe? He’s deffo flipping somebody off or something like that
Man liked a bit of LSD too if I’m not mistaken 👀😂

Love thus. Martin Allen has to be one of the best guests you’ve had. Can’t wait for part 2
A mixture of funny, strange, odd, mad all in 1 😂😂
He seems quite vulnerable behind the 'mad' persona. Interested to hear in part 2 how he found the Leicester job as I remember his short time here.
What a character. Already in my top 5 before i've even heard part 2
Been waiting for this for a long time!!
What a guy

One of the best ones, this can only be topped by Neil Warnock or Stan Ternant 😂
Mick Mccarthy or Tony Pulis
Mark Crossley the best one
Brilliant, an hour or so in ‘Can I swear’
One of the funniest podcast I’ve seen up there with Beasley , Taggart , Mcginlay what a funny man
The one we've all been waiting for based on remarks from Alby, Si and many others.
"Spicer! We are shooting that way"
Si ferry episodes 👌😂
Mental how hard this man is
That was awesome. Expected a really boisterous one, but what an eccentric character....and those "death stares!!" Never expected S Club 7 and Abba being sung in the first few minutes either!!
I sat watching this hanging on every word he said, almost mesmerised.....Absolutely brilliant.

1:17:56. “ three days later, they came in at half past seven “ 😂😂😂
I was there for his debut against Plymouth. He went into a tackle on the half way line and hit the bar.
I was mare I'm sure he scored 3
Brilliant, what a character, absolutely wonderful to listen to
What a man...he's like one of them neigbours that you think are a bit weird then you get to know them and there funny as fuck😂
Love these adverts, as funny as the actual show 😂😂😂
Moaned at me at the price of a cup of tea at Kenilworth Road and then complained to Russell Perrett about the price of a PlayStation. Random bloke.
It's like interviewing Charles Bronson's Mentor.
This is brilliant, he’s mad but top entertainment and top stories, great episode boys
I have never really seen a Martin Allen interview. Totally different to what I expected, seems a real decent bloke.
Mad Dog. Absolute legend!
Wilbraham sounds like a top man.
Wearing his West Ham
Kit to the interview as well 😂
Redtube. If you know you know
Proper character, redtube 🤣🤣
That was bloody brilliant 👏, what a character . I think you should make him your first 3 parter.
Any of you young uns who aren't familiar with Robin Friday should look him up. Truly a lower league legend
Really good book about him the greatest footballer you never saw
What a great character
The lads on about manscape is gold. "you get a lovely travel bag, which is nice "😂
