I got it - the gasoline - plus the "Pikrat" (picric acid) - along with the grenade detonations - made it the most explosive part of this war movie as the chateau was blown to bits by 11 or 12 big explosions. The Dirty Dozen had to deal with German MG-42 machine guns during the chateau raid, and regrettably, this would be costly to some of their soldiers.
Charles Bronson was a Nose Gunner in a B52 Flying Fortress during WW2, receiving a purple heart after being wounded in action. His gravestone recognized his service, not his acting career.

Im in my 50s now, this is the movie I learned about racism because these are the questions I asked as an 7 yr old....why did Jefferson have to run so far in an exposed situation, with no cover?! I know he was a football player turned actor but them yelling run Jefferson run rubbed me wrong at 7. Till this day. This segment of this movie. One of my favs, but this scene still stings, this one and the Night of the Living Dead when they shoot the brother at the end. Original Planet of the Apes, Cornelius and the brother scene. Couple that with the news at the time aa a kid it was pretty clear what the message was.

Nearly all of them have passed since this movie was made. Donald Sutherland is still kicking at 87 years young.
Those actors in my opinion are great and not replaceable. Lee Marvin , Jim Brown , Charles Bronson and more in that classic movie.
