    The most important thing that anyone can learn when they watch this video is that video poker is a much better game to play than a slot machine. Also, they should learn how to read a video poker paytable to make sure they are playing the game with the best possible return. People know when they go to a casino that they will probably lose. Video poker will allow them to lose less and to make their bankroll last longer.

    I've been using your strategies over the last 3 months and I've never walked out with less than when I began.... or in another words, I ALWAYS walk out with extra cash.
    Mind you I'm not getting rich, but when I walk out with extra cash in my pocket plus dinner and gas money as well, I consider that a very good day!! So thank you!!

      Actually, you should be losing money on most sessions. Even if you play perfect basic strategy about 2% of the return is in the royal flush. Therefore, you should be losing at a rate of about 2% until you hit that royal and then it will bring your bankroll back up. In the meantime, however, you should be able to enjoy the comps and cashback generated by your play.

I am going to Vegas in December, should I wait for the 2013 edition? I am at 97% on JOB because I've yet to hit the Royal Flush. I look forward to play VP with 100% plus payout in Vegas. I participated in a Vegas casino's football contest and didn't win anything during the season so I received my entry fees back in free slot play. I watched your video on slot machines and when I heard that video poker was better, I did a search and found this video on video poker. I went to the casino last night and looked at several machines--it was so interesting to see how the pay tables changed! I found one machine and decided to play Jacks or Better and the penny credits seemed to have the best pay out--I can't remember exactly what the payout was but I think it said 88/66. I'm sure about the 88 not so sure about the 66. Anyway, I'm not much of a gambler at all, so I just played until I had used up my free slot play credits. I played max credits, and I don't think I lost one time. I'm very pleased that I turned my free $50 into $58.65 when I cashed out, so I basically got to play the football game for free! Thanks for the information and I want to learn to play better so I might be brave enough to play the ones that cost a little more to play.

    Glad to see that you like the video. Unfortunately, there is a lot of bad information out on the internet about how slots and video poker games work. The information is in this video is factually correct and it can help you to become a better player in the casinos. Ideally, you want to get away from slots and only play video poker. The paybacks are much better on VP and, with practice, you can learn how to play your hands properly to achieve the highest payback percentages.

    You're videos are terrific. You thoroughly address the questions that us viewers are wondering about AND you use great visual displays.
    at 2:44 you mention using the information to become a long-term winner at video poker. But how can someone be a long-term winner if the odds are 99.54% with perfect strategy? Or am I misunderstanding what you mean by a long-term winner?

    • @TheJackpotGents
      @TheJackpotGents  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Most casinos will give you benefits for your play. Sometimes that will be in the form of freeplay and that can bring you over the 100% payback amount. Also, you will earn comps: free food, free rooms, free shows, etc. Ideally, you are playing a break-even game with the casinos and taking advantage of the comps if you can find a good video poker game. That won't happen with slots because the casino advantage is too high.

    A few years back there was a show called "Breaking Vegas". It featured true 'scams' that cleaned out casino money. One of them was a guy who had a dice throwing technique that really improved his odds. It won a ton! Like you, the casinos refused to believe anyone could control the throw. They let him play. It took a long time and a lot of loses to realize he could do it. He also taught others and together they made millions.

    @americancasinoguide I did not see your "how video poker machines work" video so I apologize if you answered this elsewhere, but can a manufacturer possibly enter in more card combinations, say 2.7 million, with the extra hands just being repeats of other losers? Or is this not allowed? If they did that on the 9 6 machines then wouldn't that push the expected return down near some lower pay out machines, like a 8 6, that only used the 2,598,960 unique hands?

  • @batmasterson7091
    @batmasterson7091 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Steve, I’m really liking your talk about video poker and have a question. How does the machine pick the first five cards? Does the machine just grab one of the 2,598,960 initial five card combinations? You said that in slots the casino can program in more winning combinations. Does video poker work the same by adding more initial winning or losing five card combinations? Thanks.

    • @TheJackpotGents
      @TheJackpotGents  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, it has to pick one of the combinations of cards. Video poker MUST be based on 1, 52 card deck, they cannot change the chances of any one card appearing. The only way a casino can change the payback on a video poker machine is by changing the amount the player is paid for each hand which is why different games have different paytables

    • @batmasterson7091
      @batmasterson7091 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Steve, you said that a regular slot machine cycles through a preprogrammed set of combinations and stops at the one when the player presses the play button. You do not know how many winning or losing combinations are programmed. It is just cycling through the combinations programmed. Some are programmed with more winning combinations, but you do not know. Come on five cherries! There could be 52 fruits and five are shown. But the casino could program in more or less combinations. You do not know.
      In video poker we make the assumption that there are 52 “cards” and that there are the 2,598,960 initial five card combinations. But if I’m the casino I want to win. There are 15,820,024,220 initial ten card combinations or decks. How do we know that the game is fair? How do we know that the machine is programmed to only have the decks limited to the 15 trillion, cycling through until the player presses the deal button? Is there a sign on the machine saying it is limited to the 15T combinations?
      IMHO the difference between a slot machine with fruits and video poker is that you make the assumption that the game is based on 52 cards.

    • @TheJackpotGents
      @TheJackpotGents  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Gaming regulations require that video poker games simulate the same odds as if you were playing the game as dealt from a randomly shuffled 52-card deck,. Since you mention fruit games, I assume you are from the UK? If so, gaming regulations there might be different, especially if you are playing in pubs.

  • @TheJackpotGents
    @TheJackpotGents  13 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I would agree with your statement. There are some "professional" players, but usually they are looking for some special promotion at a casino to make it worthwhile for them to play. It might be multiple points, extra cashback, or something similar. Some pros will also chase a progressive jackpot if it puts the machine into positive territory. For most players, however, they are simply getting a much better game for their money by making their bankrolls last much longer.

    I have noticed the phenomenon of spoiler cards in many different places. On a 3-play, 5-play, or 10-play game, you deal three cards the same value. Then you hold those cards and draw. The same draw cards show on some or many lines. For instance, you deal 5-play and 3 aces are drawn; hold the aces. The draw cards might be, for instance, a 6-of-clubs and a 10-of-something on 2 lines or more, same suit; different reels; sometimes 6-10 or 10-6 next rows, 10-3 and 6-jack, jack-10, and occasional pair.
    The odds of that happening randomly per session are infinitesimal.
    Then a pair of 6s deal next hand and a pair of 10s deal next hand after that, nothing returns on draw.
    Or a specific draw card may appear over and over to prevent 4-of-a-kinds on the same reel, on different lines. For example, a 6 or a pair of 5s on the first or second reel on different lines.
    Or deal a pair on reel 4&5 with no draw card for a win on reel 1,2, or 3. or some set of reels for a session.
    The phenomenon of Aces and Eights; Kings and Jacks; six pairs of 5s out of 10 hands; frequency of natural 4-of-kind on deuces with no 4-of-a-kind on any other games.
    The odds of that happening randomly per session are infinitesimal.

    Hello Steve, I sometimes visit the casinos in Montana, many of the casinos in the bars have "King's or Better" or "Queen's or Better" video poker. It's played the same as "Jacks or Better" except you need to get at least a pair of Kings to win even money. Other than that the pay table is the same. My question is, If I am playing a 9/6 KOB machine, how much does this payback percentage change?

    • @TheJackpotGents
      @TheJackpotGents  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I am not familiar with that game. However, we used our video poker software program to use the same 9/6 Jacks or better pay table (99.54% payback) and we changed it to queens or better. The payback percentage on that machine is 95.21% We then changed it to kings or better and the payback is 90.73%. Very bad games!

    For each one coin reduction on the pay table for a Jacks or Better game the effect is to reduce the overall payback by about 1.1%. When you go back to print out the 8/5 strategy, take a look at the link for "Video Poker Paytables" click on that and you will see a listing of various pay tables and how changes affect the payback percentages. Be sure to look at the Deuces Wild games. When the only change is that the payback for four-of-a-kind is reduced from five to four the % reduction is huge.

    • @TheJackpotGents

      Are you referring to class 2 machines that operate on bingo? In that case it doesn't matter if it is showing you video poker or a slot machine, the reels or cards are for "entertainment purposes only" and whether or not you win is based solely on the results of the bingo card displayed up in the corner.

    Question would you keep 2 to a royal flush ex 10 of hearts and Jack of hearts, if you have lets say.
    10 of hearts jack of hearts, and then queen of spades and 2 of spades and 4 of clubs. Or would you opt to keep the high cards jack of hearts and queen of spades?

    • @TheJackpotGents
      @TheJackpotGents  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      You would keep the jack and queen even though they are not suited. If you had a king of hearts rather than a 10 of hearts, then you would keep the two suited high cards: jack and king of hearts.

    and how do you do when the mashine accept bets?, i mean, there are some video poker mashines that after you make whatever winning combinations then you could raise the bet until you get a lower card than the betting card. in this case, is it a pattern that i must have to follow or something in order to have much probability to get the higher card and win more money?

    Ok, so i get the math/odds/payout table stuff but the thing I never trusted with VP is the initial deal may be random but what's preventing the computer from favouring the house with the 2nd cards? For the example you showed you had 4 hearts going for the flush on the 5th, that's where I think the computer could think "no way I'm dealing out a heart" can you explain?

    • @TheJackpotGents

      Gaming regulations require that all cards be dealt randomly. As long as you are playing in a regulated gaming jurisdiction, you should be fine.

      @@TheJackpotGents thks for the quick reply. I'm in Toronto but im sure the Canadian regs are just as tight as U.S. (just a little suspicious i guess since i always feel the cards i dropped would have been better than what i kept with what was delt next!!) Either that or I'm just a crap player!!LOL 😂😂

    I played GTA San Andreas and there I found out about video poker and thought that would be fun to program.

    It would depend on the paytable of the machine. Usually, you want to play the game with the highest paying paytable. However, some games, such as Double Bonus and Double Double Bonus have more complicated strategies and you might make more mistakes . You would need to practice the stratgey until you have it memorized, but bring along a strategy card too, just in case you can't remember how to play a particular hand.

      Playing video poker is nothing at all like playing regular poker against other players, except perhaps for the names of the hands. Many poker players will bluff, but there is no bluffing involved in video poker.

      Video poker machines still operate in the same manner and all of the information in the video is still accurate. The only difference is that more new novelty games have been introduced. Just to name a few: Big Times Draw Poker, Black Jack Bonus Poker, Build a Wheel Poker, Color Match Royals Poker, Crazy Times Pay Poker, Double Pay Poker (SH), Double Super Times Pay Poker, Double Super Times Pay Poker (SH), Draw Poker with Dream Card, Draw Poker with Dream Card (SH), Dream Card Poker, Extra Action Poker, etc. They all require making an extra bet in order to be eligible for the bonuses that they will give you. In all cases the extra bet adds more volatility to the game. However, in some cases it also adds extra to the payback percentage, which is good.
      Extra Draw Frenzy Poker

    Thanks for the video, very clear and helpful information, however a doubt. The percentage of Expeceted Return increases on something when you put a bill of 20 compared to a 10 bill, and so on with other higher?

    • @TheJackpotGents
      @TheJackpotGents  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Pedro Arnaldo torres chávez The payback percentage will change based on the denomination of the machine and not how much money you put into the machine to play. Usually, the higher the denomination, the higher the payback. Penny machines will have the lowest payback and the $5, $25, $100 machines will have the highest.

    • @TheJackpotGents
      @TheJackpotGents  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +americancasinoguide I just realized that my above statement refers to the payback percentage on slot machines and you were referring to a video about video poker. Usually, the same theory would apply to video poker machines, but not always. That is why it is good to learn how to read a video poker paytable. This will allow you to choose the best paying machines and avoid the bad ones. With a slot machine you will never know what it is set to pay back to the public. However, you can usually assume that the higher the denomination, the more it is set to pay back.

I don’t know why casino turn there ATM off and make the customers use the pay windows which the fees are higher and I think it’s to get you away from machines so they can idol and make you walk further away so they can change the odds.

    I basically try to play a break-even game of video poker. This allows me to take advantage of the casino comp system and not lose a lot of money. As part of these benefits I get to to see many free concerts at the casino near me, plus I save money when I travel to Las Vegas by getting free hotel rooms. I have been lucky this year and I am ahead several thousand dollars. Full-pay deuces wild is a game with a more than 100% return. You can find some in Reno. Also, in Vegas at off-strip casinos.

    This has happened more times than I can remember: I am dealt a hand with a pair of Jacks ( or better) which is an automatic winning hand but this hand also has 4 cards of the same suit. So, do I throw away a winning hand to try for a flush, which pays much more than the Jacks? What is the basic strategy for this type of hand? Thanks.

    • @TheJackpotGents
      @TheJackpotGents  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Keep the wining hand, unless it's four to a straight flush.

    • @1962KSR
      @1962KSR 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      My philosophy is....if the machine wants you to win, you'll win. I've thrown away a 2 pair on the deal and got a 4 of a kind. Completely random, no strategy is needed.

    • @TheJackpotGents
      @TheJackpotGents  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Well, the machine doesn't decide whether or not it wants you to win. It just randomly deals cards and pays out accordingly if you get a winning hand. There is always only one mathematically correct way to play any video poker hand and you should try to learn to play your hands properly. If you always make the best play you can achieve the best long-term results for that game. So, there is actually an element of skill involved in video poker. Casinos make most of their money on video poker games from players who don't know how to play properly.

    • @willdrucker4291
      @willdrucker4291 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ehhh...in reality, a Jacks or Better is not technically a winning hand...just even money...the rhythm of your machine may very well dictate the best outcome...for example...if you’ve been playing a machine that has dealt flushes or better with a fair level of consistency, you might very well want to drop the Jack or better in favor of shooting for the flush...of course, there are no guarantees....indeed Video Poker is a game of BOTH luck AND skill

    There are some games that have an expected return of more than 100%. However, they are heard to find. Usually, they can only be found at locals casinos in Nevada. In some states, such as Illinois and Mississippi the gaming regulations do not allow video poker games to return more than 100%. That is not the case in Nevada and many casinos advertise the games they have that return more than 100%.

    Thanks again for your professional teaching vids . I am playing 8/5 jacks or better now perfectly. last couple times I went to the local casino, I have been able to play for hours and stay at least 40 to 50 dollars ahead on the quarter machines, But so far haven't hit the big one the royal Flush LOL. I was doing so well tonight I decided to go into the High rollers room and play 8/5 jacks or better poker on a dollar machine . I did well but still no royal. But I will keep trying for it LOL. even on the dollar video poker machine I still kept over $40.00 ahead of what I started with and I played that machine for 30 minutes so I was either real lucky or was playing pretty good or both. Thanks for the info JKW

      hman630 The theoretical return on an 8/5 Jacks or Better machines is 97.28% when played perfectly with a maximum coins bet. That means that even if you never make a mistake, the game is expected to return only $97.28 for every $100 you put into the machine. So, you have been lucky and that's why you are ahead. In the long run, you are expected to $2.72, for each $100 played. Unless the cashback, or other benefits from the casino, is 2.72% or higher, you will be a loser on that machine. If you play 600 hands an hour on a quarter machine your expected loss per hour is $20.40 ($1.25 x 600 x 2.72). If you move up to $1 machines, your expected hourly loss is $81.60. Please keep this in mind when you play.

    • @hman630
      @hman630 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes I know that. Thanks again. JKW

    Steve, how is it that casinos will allow you to play their video poker games with the EV strategy in hand, either with a hard copy printout or say an app on your smart phone? Won't they "back you off" the game if they catch you doing this. Much like they do when they catch someone counting cards at a 21 Table.

    • @TheJackpotGents
      @TheJackpotGents  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It depends on the casino. We have never run into an issue using a hard printed strategy card but have had some players tell us that the casino we were playing at don't like players having them out. It could be us being paranoid, but we don't recommend using a strategy chart from a phone because the law for cheating in nevada that it just says something along the lines of using a digital advice to give you an advantage so if a casino wanted to they could give you a hard time.

    • @TheJackpotGents
      @TheJackpotGents  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Also, on a vast majority of the video poker games you will find in the country, even with perfect strategy you are still playing at a disadvantage and the casinos know this which is why I think most don't mind you using a strategy chart

    • @Henry_Fung
      @Henry_Fung 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I know some folks like Bob Dancer and Jean Scott tell people to be discreet about this, but others like Henry Tamburin shake their head at the 99% of video poker players that don't have any references. Depending on how comfortable I am with the strategy I either have it out on the machine (slant/bartop) or leave it on my lap. Using a paper printout is also much faster than dialing up the exact hand on my phone, and I always feel that is more like cheating since it is an electronic device.

For slots, yes, you have no control over the outcome. In video poker, the cards you choose to hold affect your odds of winning. Are you telling me that if I get dealt a royal flush, I have the same odds of winning if I keep all the cards as if I redraw them?

    As explained in the video, the game of video poker is very different than playing the lottery, which is simply a game of luck. Just as there are professional poker players, there are professional video poker players. The universe of professional VP players is much smaller, but they do exist. By only playing games with the best pay tables, using the proper strategies and taking advantage of good casino promotional programs there are players who can come out ahead in the long run.
