No peas = No traditional Aussie savory mince! Thanks Greggo, this dish reminds me of my childhood. Piping hot savory mince served over some buttered toast with a freshly squeezed cup of orange juice. Legendary!
very good tutorial 👌 i added ground cumin and a little more wostershire sauce and the peas minted ..i then whiped some creamy mash taters ..put savory mince in oven dish .. mash on top then crated tastey cheddar..bake till cheese melt near golden .. EAT .. your recipe inspired me ✨️
When my mom made something similar she called it shit on a shingle. It was a meat gravey but there was a lot more gravy. There also was mashed potatoes I think. It has been a while. Either way yummmmm....
I swear you just starve yourself all day until you make something so you get the best reaction to your food. Love ya Greg. Don't stop being a legend and a half 👌🏼
Yes yes yes, my favourite , I think I ate this every day at high school for lunch lol , add another 40 years or so and I still love savoury mince , this recipe looks close to my favourite , I’ll give it ago . 👍
Made this after watching your video, thank you for sharing, used half of the mixture as a cottage pie. The other half I added chilli powder part of it I made a pasty using a slice of bread de crusted and rolled out. Filled it and sealed it egged it and baked it until browned.
This reminds me of a recipe my Grandmother made that I loved, she called it "Dinner in a Dish". Simple, basic and delicious, thanks for reminding me, I gotta try to make some real soon. Cheers mate.
Thank you to your mother for the recipe it was absolutely delicious. The only thing I didn’t add was peas but the rest was amazing. A touch too much salt on my end but the recipe you gave was sensational. I had it in a sweet potato
I do the same sort of.. onion, garlic, grated carrot, mushrooms, instant gravy mix, chopped potatoes.. when serving on the toast, add a sunny side up egg on the toast👌🏽
Currently on lock down here in NZ and have some mince in my freezer so needed to find a recipe thats easy and most importantly ingredients that I have and here it is! Good on ya Neighbor I will be making this tomorrow. Cheers.
I've just recently rediscovered good old savoury mince on toast myself and thought I'd check out your recipe to see how they compared. Our family's recipe is pretty much identical to this one but with a bit less tomato paste.Back when I was a little kid in the 60s, mum used to just add a splash of tomato sauce as tomato paste wasn't something most people had in the pantry/fridge or nothing tomato at all. As to it making a good cottage pie filling, it certainly is! An easy, quick, tasty and nourishing tea that is true comfort food and conjures up memories of childhood (for me, at least).
We call this “Hash” where I come from. Growing up, my family would make it out of left over slow cooked roast, carrots, and potatoes and gravy. I like your edition of peas. Will definitely try it.
if you light a candle on the kitchen bench Greggo, it'll mean you never have onion eyes again - I used to think it was an old hippy's tale, but it really works
Greg mine gets, red capsicum, green beans and a few more carrots (no peas as FODMAP unfriendly), and served with a green salad can compensate for not many greens (lettuce, avocado, cucumber and red onion). Into a casserole dish and a sliced potato layer this recipe goes from basic to more gourmet, and is loved in our home.
ahh Greg I have a lot of thing s on my mind but one things for sure your videos relax me a lot. Thanks for being so consistent and putting up great content
I've made this so many times... it's a really great recipe! I did notice that in the recipe ingredients you haven't specified how much tomato paste to add? I add 2 tablespoons.
New subscriber love your vids so Aussie as I'm Aussie and so easy to make I used frozen vege mix and then save some and add curry powder for indian version with lemon juice on top on toast so bluddy good for breaky lunch or dinner ✅
I tried this recipe. It turned out great! Easy and relatively quick to make yet super delicious. Thanks a lot for uploading this video. I think I'll try the macaroni and mince recipe next.
I've cooked this a few times over the last few weeks , but i add diced potato as well , and i used the leftovers to make cottage pie easy peasy ,, im about to go cook this agin tonight and put it on homemade bread , im a newbie cook but am progressing fast 😁
Reminds me of the stuff we were served as kids. It does look like a tasty lunch. (Minus the peas😝) Canada in the 1950s served similar style fare. I suppose we had somewhat matching cultures at that time before all the immigration began here.
Nice! My mum used to make this all the time back in the day... I think she used some Curry powder in there instead of the gravy mix. Some grated vintage cheddar over the top of it would be nice too :-)
Sav mince is onions and peas. Lancashire way. Pork and beef mince is best it tastes good for this dish. Here's a tip have some beetroot on side. And don't have it with toast have it with a jacket potato..... 🇬🇧
It sure looks good. btw, What did do to the fork my twisted friend? You better hope your mom does not see that, lol. Your mom must be a great cook. You should have her on the show some time. Thumbs up for moms recipe.
Here's a couple of tips for those onion tears, the first one is for you stoners out there. You know how this works! :D The other is to refrigerate your onion! Chilling the onion first helps prevent those tear inducing fumes from getting to you! Looks delicious, and I bet it taste great too!

Growing up this was always a weekend dinner. Don't think mum put butter in it though😊😊
Greggo, I miss the way you used to customise each closing theme song with some random thoughts about the dish you cooked. Bring it back!
