Would love to see you read some books/poetry that has inspired Hozier, seeing as his lyricism is also so layered and steeped in so many literary references!
Also watching this vid i realized that a line from his song Jackie & Wilson (‘she blows out of nowhere, a roman candle of the wild’) may have been inspired by On the Road which is so interesting

On the Road always reminds me of that one scene in Gilmore Girls where Paris and Jess are talking about books. Paris: "I have one word for Jack Kerouac: Edit"
Does anyone else enjoy the little "Bye Bye" at the end of Jack's videos as much as I do? They feel kinda nostalgic to me and just calm me down, so I never miss them when watching a video 🙈
I really like Jack Kerouac too, it’s so cool to see how the text sort of “changes” every time I read it. Each new read you find something new that wasn’t there. My fave is Dharma Bums, I like it more than on the road honestly. I prefer his later work compared to his earlier ones, I like how introspective he is in his narrative, looking back to a certain time of his life. Something I find really interesting :D
On the Road also inspired a musical called The Mad Ones! In the song The Mad Ones, it quotes the exact same quote as the one in the video. I was in a literature class about The Beat Generation and when I tell you I didn't understand a single book I read in that class....I didn't understand a single one. Especially On The Road by Jack🤧🤧
So I have a genuine problem with not finishing books if they don’t entirely catch me. And most don’t. When I first started reading On The Road, I put it down, it was so boring and winded and I couldn’t catch on. However! I picked it back up several months later and read on, without expecting the plot to come and this was the first book ever where I was able to do that, and when I kept on reading, almost like a revelation, it dawned on me that that was the whole point. The words, so beautifully put together, the feeling you get from them and the rhythm of of all, without a goal, kind of like music itself. I actually became so engrossed in it that I would walk while reading and hated to put it down in the presence of other people - not because of the story, but because it made me feel almost high. In hindsight, what caught me and what I appreciate about it so tremendously is that it is mad. It has that Dionysian energy Nietzsche talks about and I am fool for philosophy and believe that we are missing madness from our lives and our art and Jack somehow captured it and put it out there for the ones ready to get high on it. I really think that’s what it’s about. I can’t remember a damn thing that happened in this book, but what would I do to relive the madness of reading it… it reminded me that the delirious happiness of excitement was accessible in the world and especially in myself. High is the best word to describe it really.
