This is a great joke, and I'm not trying to be a buzz kill, but most species of tortoises have shorter lifespans than us, there are a handful that have the supercentury lifespans, the others still live for decades though still pretty long, but humans have pretty long lifespans compared to most animals.

My grandma had her turtoise since she was 20 and she died at the age of 80. Her turtoise is still with us at the age of 86

@Pod Not really, you can clone a version that basically starts at the age of cloning. At best that would be cloning your pet to breed it, so you could have (maybe) normal offspring. Though the clone of the original would not live the full lifespan it's original had. (so far as I know at this time)

I've had my box turtle, Peter, since I was 5. I'll be 32 this year. He has his own room now bc I usually let him roam free but he was making too much noise at night! He's stubborn and likes to take the path of most resistance

I've had my horsefield since I was 5 and I'm 13 (not as long as u tho) honestly he's the best pet I've ever had and I take him for walks on a leash to the park but I have to carry him on the way there else I'd be walking for hours 🤣 I'm hoping to keep him as long as I can! It's actually shocking how they have such unique personalitys tho

I had a red-eared slider turtle given to me and at first, I wasn't thrilled because what's so special about a pet turtle? You can't cuddle them or love them. WRONG! Sammy is my new best friend. Sure you don't handle them very often but you can pet them, make them chase things in their tanks and he dances when he sees me coming because he knows it's feeding time. Sammy made it so I became a "Save the Turtles" activist

It's actually kind of cool because if you have kids, then after you're gone they can take him. It sucks outliving your fur babies. I've lost some cats that I had from childhood into adult hood. My oldest cat lived to be almost 21 years old. So spending over half my life with her, then losing her, is still hard on me. I lost her son when he was 17. And another cat at 17....and just lost one at 15. I've lost SO many cats in my lifetime and now I've decided to not get anymore cause it's too much loss for a lifetime that I can't handle it.

There are tortoise that born before that founding of America that's still alive today, to say it's a life long commitment is an understatement, I hope the grand kids of her grand kids like Henry.

There are quite a few tortoises that live for less than 60 years as well at least when i was caring for this red foot the research i did at the time was saying they can live for around 40 years.

Someone sent this to me bc it reminded them of me n my tort -- and they were so right!!! My torts name is Tyrus and he even sleeps in bed w me (he is laying on my shoulder making happy sleep-chirps as I write this). He is puppy pad trained and understands more than 200 words! We are working on signs so he can communicate better w me. He has signs for sleepy, "gotta poop", "I love you, too", and "yes"(more like a general positive sign bc he also uses it to show he's happy). His previous owner abandoned him near my house. When I found him he was very sick and wouldve otherwise died in the cold. This was right after I got out of rehab and I was in the deepest depths of my depression and suicidal ideation. I nursed him back to health and in turn, he gave me a reason to live. I love him more than anything in this world!! If you're thinking about getting a tortoise, I highly recommend one, as long as you take their long life spans into account. Tortoises are truly amazing animals and I am so happy to have found my soulmate for life.
how did you manage to train yours? i would totally have mine on the bed with me too but he is definitely not trained and we’ve already had a few accidents haha
@Victoria Canales I fully support you in this mission! 🤣 what kind of tortoise do you have? is he generally pretty interactive & loving with you? i think that makes a huge difference. tortoises, like cats, can have greatly varying personalities--some can be trained, some just don't care & want to do their own thing. breed makes a difference too--mine is a redfoot & theyre generally more social.
honestly tho my lil guy mostly figured it out on his own. he has always seemed to prefer going on soft things, so I just make sure the puppy pads are the most comfortable place for him to go. I also heavily encouraged him with toys & treats. i still leave treats on top of the puppy pad once in a while just to keep that reinforced. he has a special froggy toy that stays on top of the puppy pad that he can play with so he doesn't wander off while pooping & miss the pad.
also important: I keep the puppy pad in the same place all the time, otherwise he gets very confused. about two years ago we moved to a new house, & it took him more than a month to stop having accidents.
as far as sleeping in bed w me: EVERY time he's in bed w me I make sure he's on a puppy pad, so I think that helped normalize it for him. I keep the puppy pad on top of one of those washable incontinence pads & use a waterproof matress cover. sometimes he still has a little pee during the night, but with all those barriers, it doesn't get on me or the bed!
important for my lil guy too was to not get mad at him when he had an accident. almost every study done on torts shows (& this seems true w most animals) that NEGATIVE REINFORCEMENT DOES NOT WORK. it'll just make them scared, confused, and angry!!

I've got a water turtle with a "dog-like behaviour" and also a Brazilian tortoise a little like yours.
The main difference is time: I've been raising them since early childhood, for 28 years now.
In other words, prepare for a lifetime ride!

People will literally just settle with anyone and try to convince themselves that they are in love and happy with said person because who wants to be single? I think i'd rather be single most of my life and find someone who actually loves me the last 20 years of my life than spend countless years with someone who I barely tolerate. That's so cute. I also have a Sulcata tortoise who's turning 5 in October. When I have him out in the yard, my neighbors walking or driving by always stop or slow down to look at him and sometimes ask questions. A month or so ago, one of my neighbor's grandsons came over with his grandmother and was absolutely enamored with him. He's a great conversation piece if nothing else!
