This song is an absolute triumph and masterpiece like everyone says, this band is just so stunningly beautiful it’s unbelievable they are nor given far more credits
I recall back around then the UK TV station Channel 4 used to close down around midnight. After they’d closed down, they’d often play some random or weird video, almost as it the person on transmission control just ran it - no announcement or caption etc. One night after waiting a few mins with a blank screen, this came in. Blew me away. I couldn’t wait next day to get the album out and play it on my radio programme!
Love this, I was young, it was the 80s and I thought I was the collect thing around. Brilliant brilliant into. Superb band Heaven 17 - And That's No Lie
Just occasionally The Tube did something brilliant, and this one off 10 minute video is seared in my memory as the peak of that great show. Had it on VHS, sadly no more. Heaven 17's magnum opus, truly superb. Not a note wasted.
I remeber watching this when it originally aired and I went out and bought the LP next day just to get this track. So cool, even now and it's my favourite Heaven 17 song. Thanks for the upload :D I wont have to wait another 33 years to watch the video now it's on youtube!
Just heard that Claudia Fontaine, the background singer, died in 2018. I feel very sorry for that. On the other hand, I am happy to see John Wilson, the bass guitar player, in this video.
I too remember watching and recording this on my long defunct VHS tape! Thought it was gone forever, thank you for allowing me to re-live my 80’s youth!
Saw this on its first showing back in the day as a young teenager it was a wow moment then to think of how this whole arrangement was put together, it has everything words, synth, guitar, bass plus coolest backing singers - this would hold up today 2024 very impressive. Thank you Heaven 17.
Thanks for the video! Ever since I lost my vinyl record player, I haven't been able to hear this version of the song! And now I can do it again as often as I want! Hooray.... 🤩 🥳
A classic! Never forgotten. Bringing back an intense period of my life, fist fights with a good friend.... over a girl.... I married her. The juice wasn't worth the squeeze. Black eyes mend. Friendships endure. Amen.
But when the fire goes out The dark starts moving in And that's the truth Right now you're on the stand And I feel like the judge Who needs the proof? The slaves of truth It was on every face in town But I would not understand Waiting for the news Will it ever come my way? I won't be beat, not in a thousand years I'll never lose, if I can prove you're not the one Just leave me now, you're making my blood run cold The word is out, so go, your feet won't touch the ground Now that she has gone I've got to shake the pain, act like a man The sweetness that's inside Will slowly die away Who do you think you are? You're making a fool of me Make no mistake, this is no fake, this is the end Just shut your mouth, make room for someone new So guess who's back, it's happy Jack, and that's no lie How was I to know? So discreet, no-one speaks Take the word from here If you play you've got to pray Who do you think you are? You're making a fool of me Make no mistake, this is no fake, this is the end I won't be beat, not in a thousand years Just leave me now, you make my blood run cold The word is, the word is out
@ flashbackcaruso: THANK YOU SO MUCH, you made my day! I've spent more than 30 years to find this amazing song. I forgot the title...and that's no lie! ;)
Confession time. My teenage years were formative in the way that I knew of so much Great music and it was mostly coming from the UK. Needless to say, I'm here because we owe a sincere debt to this Great Group. I lived in the 'united states' during the 1980's when there was so much great music to learn and sing plus discover, regardless of genre. Perhaps there was backlash due to Heaven 17 having no guitar or bass, but synths. Well, that was bullshit then and even more so today. Finally, any band that derives their name from a S. Kubrick film is tops with me. And I don't believe there was any mention of the music store in the actual A Clockwork Orange novel. If I'm mistaken, I stand accused. But, this is in praise of Heaven 17.
There are dozens is not hundreds of awesome bands from the 80s and 90s that were never heard because they weren't critterling offspring of the Families, and so couldn't get the time of day from Cabal-swallowed record-labels and radio-stations.
I thought Mo Foster played bass on this (he's the only bass player credited on the album) but that's not him in the video. I wonder if the guy in the video (who is he?) played on this track, or if Mo couldn't make the video shoot so they got a stand in?
I think John Wilson did play on some of the tracks (Mo did the gorgeous fretless on 'The Skin I'm In') including this one. He did all of the bass (and some if not all of the guitar) on the first two albums.
@@funkmike It's deffo John Wilson on the audio here. I've copped his licks for years. I wonder where he is now? Never seen anything from him other than H17.
An absolute masterpiece. Total 80's perfection. And still wonderful in 2024
This song is an absolute triumph and masterpiece like everyone says, this band is just so stunningly beautiful it’s unbelievable they are nor given far more credits

Erano avanti di 100 anni. 😍
Ancora bellissima ed unica. Non invecchia.
True beauty!
Easily one of their best songs, cleverly constructed with powerful lyrics.
6:16 - 7:30 is just pure magic
know exactly where before I've even got there
What a masterpiece ! The sound in the first 30 seconds remind me of a scene in the classic science fiction movie 2001 A Space Odyssey
Stunning!
