      Generally speaking archers are specialized unit. They often already had training since age 5. England place importance on archery soo much. They ban other activity such as football. They pass a law in 1252 that requires every englishmen aged 15 to 60 to practice archery every week for at least 5 hours.

      @ecklesezekiel9804 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +31

      The ones used in combat historically weren't like this unless we're counting something like an arbalest. Which.. is quite extreme and not what mika is using.
      Crossbows have incredible draw weight but very short draw length (~1/2 that of bows). The short limbs give it a low draw force curve, and crossbow bolts are shorter and thicker so also less aerodynamic than an arrow. So the energy at release of a 300lb draw crossbow is ~ the same as a 70-80lb bow.
      Modern crossbows can avoid all these problems with better materials and longer limbs.
      Anyways it's all wrong 1/10 deleting my genshin account RIP my newly pulled navia.

      Historically, muskets had a blade at the tip (called a bayonet) so soldiers can stab people with it in melee range.
      In that sense, the bayonet is a lot more like a spear, since it has a long body made out of wood, and sharp iron tip to stab.

    • @aetius7139
      @aetius7139 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +21

      @@Aliens1337bayonet was invented due to warfare changes. Previously musketeer often accompanied by pikemen. Should enemy cavalry gets to close. The musketeer will retreat into pike squares. This changes after series of military reforms and drill that made pikes obselete. Hence the bayonet. Early bayonet is just a dagger with attachment plug to the barrel. Making it a makeshift spear. The downside is that they are hard to remove. Making the musket unusable for the rest of the battle.

      Yeah but you could turn that into an advantage tho. You could hire or train assistant gunners to load the weapon for you. You and the assistant could bring multiple crossbows. Have one be the marksman and the other the loader since that is an advantage to having a pre-charged weapon. As for a "lot of strength", it really depends on the draw weight of the crossbow of course. The one advantage to the crossbow is the ability to implement simple machines that would leverage better power making it possible to draw heavier weights and generate bigger force. Like, if I take a small dinky shortbow and turn that into a crossbow, I doubt I'll be more tired than the bowman who's using the same bow size.

      25% chance of hitting someone at a distance of 5 meters? Where have you heard this? Civil war era smooth bore muskets have about a 42-48% chance of hitting someone at 200 YARDS, idk who told you 25% at 5 , meters but you have absolutely no idea at all what you are talking about, it would only be that inaccurate if you were using rounds balls much smaller than the diameter of the barrel, so you'd literally have to be using the wrong ammo, I've shot smooth bore muskets and have hunted with rifled ones, ive also owned rifled muskets and they've been extremely accurate, you're thinking of a short barrel black powdered deringer or like a pepper box, then it probably wouldn't hit anything over 5 meters, but the average smooth bore musket around the time of the civil war has been documented to hit Targets accurately at beyond 100yards an still lethal to around 175-200 yards, infact when they would train civil war soldiers to shoot targets at 20-50 yards and even then they were as accurate as the person was skilled. Also they did use rifles muskets at could reliably hit targets at 400-500 yards but they mostly used smooth bores because the smooth bores were already accurate enough considering most of the time the enemy would be close to you.

    smooth bore civil war era muskets were accurate beyond 100 yards, with an accuracy of around 50% chance of hitting a small target at 200 yards. And rifled muskets were also used in the civil were and were documented to be able to reliably hit a man at up to 500 yards were as bows made to go far can only reliably hit a target at up to 400 yards, an the average bow and arrow only goes 50-70 meters and long bows about 90 meters,so yes some bows can be more accurate at long range than smooth bore muskets if your really skilled at usingna bow but rifled muskets can absolutely have more range. Bows are probably more accurate at close range though, except rifled muskuts would absolutely be more accurate overall.

    So on bow vs crossbow vs musket, it's a sizeable can of worms to investigate, but where's what I've found:
    · Bows are cheap to make and while light ones are useable by anyone, anything worthy of military warfare (longbows specialy), they require lots of training (english longbowmen spent their entire lives training!)
    · Crossbows are amazing, as they're easier to use than a bow, and allow for almost anyone to use heavier draw weights without as much training
    · Firearms are akin to a further evolution of the crossbow. Their main advantage is that they outrange everything else, at the sacrifice of accuracy, but when you have a hundred men, accuracy isn't as important as being the one dealing the first blow. This means that firearms were more of a military campaign thing than personal, which is why they're hard to represent in most videogames.
    As for Chevreuse, to make her musket more realistic they could extend the range and add inaccuracy, but that's represented by the shortened range, which is a fair representation. If you had to play with musket inaccuracy it'd just be unreliable and frustrating!

    Yes, muskets don't have that much range due to the ballistics of the time really didn't allow for higher muzzle velocity.
    Muskets with a 3/4 inch (19.05 mm) diameter travel at 1425 fps (feet per second) or 434 m/s (meters per second), with different diameters having nearly identical muzzle velocity. It's in the Elemental Skill's name (Short-Range).
    As small arms development continued, so did muzzle velocity. Smokeless powder (especially after 1886 with the French Lebel rifle) are now capable of 1000 m/s (4000 fps), allowing for long range shots at the time. Nowadays, projectiles like the 5.56 NATO are as fast as 3130 fps , while precision rifles like the CheyTac Intervention chambered for the 408 Cheyenne fire as fast as 3500 fps (1100 m/s).

      Actually revolving black powder rifles were used in the civil war an you can still buy firing reproductions to this day, also the cylinder isn't the biggest problem, the real danger is black powder revolvers since there creation have been known to chain fire, where you fire the gun and a spark from the chamber sets off another chamber next to it, so the bullet fires out of the chamber and has a good chance of hitting your hand, since its just coming of the cylinder and not the barrel it wont have as much energy but it could still blow part of your hand off. Thats why they would smear greese or like pig fat over every cylinder hole to prevent chain fire.

    This is just outright wrong. Bows could be effective out to about 100 yards. Muskets like those used in the Napoleonic era also had an effective range of about 100 yards. What differs is that the musket's maximum range is much, _much_ higher. A bow may be able to launch an arrow 400 to 500 yards on a good day. A musket can reach over a thousand, easy.
    However, Chevreuse uses some fancy revolver thing, which is most likely a percussion cap rifle and not a musket, so her effective range should be absolutely humongous. A similar revolving rifle made in 1893 had sight marks all the way out to 900 yards. It would absolutely be able to shoot further than that, 900 yards is just the furthest the designers thought anyone would be able to actually hit a person.

    Alright, let's talk realism.
    The effective range (not the maximum range) of a medieval recurve war bow (not a longbow) can be anywhere between 20m for low draw weight to anything up to 150m or beyond for the heaviest of draw weights (but you need to have an herculean physique to be able to fire one of those).
    The effective range of a 16th-19th century musket was around 100m.
    Looking at the arms and torso of the girl on the left, it would be difficult to believe that she would be able to draw anything over a 30lb draw weight recurve. 30lb it's on the upper end of what is recommended for a beginner archer, aka someone with poor upper body musculature.
    The mechanical marvel that were medieval crossbows, on the other hand, could very easily pierce mail armor at an effective range of 100m, with an estimated maximum range of about 350m (but good luck hitting anything at that distance).
    The "historically, muskets have shorter range than bows" statement is simply not true because the range of a bow depends on the design of the bow, the strength of the user and the weight of the draw. Longbows and heavy recurves have longer range than muskets, but those are nowhere near what the girl on the left could possibly use.

  • @willyvereb

    It's a pop history misconception, to be honest. Muskets have a lot longer range and are more accurate than bows. In theory your bow can be more mechanically accurate but unless you precisely know how far the target is you'll miss far more easily from long ranges than with a musket. It was even noted by Koreans during the Imjin War. Archery just has so much mythology attached to it by various sources so it's hard to separate that from reality. English is also one of the only archery cultures which kept pushing back against adopting firearms. Even in the early 19th century they kept romanticising the longbow (technically they still do, just pretend their insanity only applies to "old guns"), Duke of Wellignton famously thought archery as superior. At the same time Napoleon's forces had a ridiculously easy time when their infantry with muskets faced off against Tatar horse archers.
    Of course this is a fantasy game so pop history knowledge is fine. Balancing things is also important. I just don't want people to replace one myth with another.

  • @MetalheadMitch762
    @MetalheadMitch762 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

    A musket doesn't have a shorter range than a bow. A musketball has a far longer range and many primary sources show that people of the time knew that. Also a musket is point accurate to roughly 100 yards, but volley fire could be done at far longer ranges. The brown bess musket had a velocity of 1500-1700 fps when recordeed historically. It had a the point accurate range of 100 yards while it had an area target range of 300 yards, but the lethal range of the musketball was about 1200 yards. Also reports at the time stated a musketball could penetrate 2 people at 150 yards. Bows were used as volley weapons just like muskets and a longbow had a maximum lethal range of 300 yards, but they only shot for point accuracy at 50 yards. Many people also tend to forget that line soldiers back then were not trained in actual marksmanship, only drill. Even rifled muskets werent significantly more effective during the civil war because soldiers had no marksmanship training. Poor accuracy of Union soldiers was one of the reasons the NRA was founded.
