    I really appreciate what you said about not going too fast. I feel like "The Acquisition Phase" ends, for most people, rather abruptly. For me, it happened when I sat down to clean and organize all of my pens, and I suddenly felt a little overwhelmed by my collection. Now, I'm on the lookout for just a few very particular things, and I like that. Thanks! I always enjoy your videos!

    David, your "getting started" story is priceless. Thanks for sharing. An I agree about creating an analog To=Do list as well...

    I got the bug when a friend gave me a Metropolitan and a journal. The feeling of the pen, the wayward smear of poussiere de lune. I then did something that was very brave and was gifted a Japanese grail pen and the nib danced. You are a joy to listen and learn from. Thank you.

    Good for you, Figboot. I can't imagine the frustration receiving numerous e-mails daily to authenticate, and advise on own purchases, as your professional career is outside pen retailing. Perhaps a video on how you went about purchases on fountain pens, so that you can assist them, and not hold their hand in the process. I have viewed your content once in a while, and appreciate your insights. Have a nice day.

    Very nice response to the question, "How many pens do you have?" Anyone, regardless of the number of pens they own, should feel good and comfortable being included in this community. Bravo!

    Lots of good advice, David. Especially not going too fast...because most of us did that! I also do analog to-do lists. I also try to journal on a daily basis. I find actually writing out things clarifies my thoughts and feelings, and it recharges my vocabulary and power of expression. And journaling - even if it's only a paragraph or two - means you got to use one (or more) of your pens that day - and appreciate it.

    I was hesitant to watch this TH-cam. I've had some kind or other fountain pen for over sixty years, all black pens, all black ink, so what did I need this episode for? Well, I finally watched it anyway. And I learned a few things. How about that? All good information, and thank you. Well done!

    I am not sure if it’s worth the time and energy but maybe listing the questions answered and maybe a time stamp in the description might make it easier for people in the future looking for a specific question or you want to share a specific one with a time stamp link later.

    My favorite pens write in reverse (upside down). It's a great way to make quick edits when you use a wider nib that would require changing pens to squeeze some words between lines.

  • @esthers5876
    @esthers5876 ปีที่แล้ว

    My first pen was a Platinum carbon desk pen, recommended by two urban sketch artists. I could leave it for months without writing, and it would still write, so I wrongfully assumed all fountain pens were like that. Lesson learned! I always enjoy your videos. Thank you for sharing!

  • @TymberJ
    @TymberJ ปีที่แล้ว

    As someone who really likes seeing reviewers demonstrate reverse writing, I'll add it's great for editing your own or other people's writing too, and being able to make broad marks that need to show up against the text *and* legible writing in the margins with the same pen is handy.

    I was first exposed to fountain pens, back in 1975, with the very simple old Schaefer student fountain pens, while a 5th grader in St. Dominic's R.C. Parochial School in Da'Bronx N.Y. They are a very simple clear or opaque plastic body with a chrome slip cap, & take cartridges only. We weren't allowed, or even thought of eye-droppering them, and they won't accept a converter. I stopped using fountain pens because of the perception of being impractical until aboutt 13 years ago, and out of no where, I saw a video, I think & BANG! I was rehooked. And it all restarted with those old school Schaefers. These days I eye-dropper them, and use silicone grease on the threads. But I've found them to be among the most reliable pens I've owed, & still use. But now a days, I too have way too many fountain pens. LOL! Great video Dave, thanks for the very funny, & practical insights & answers. Best regards.

    Thank you for this. I could see myself asking many of these questions since I'm new to your channel. I love your EDC spreadsheet, as an Excel nerd I think this is very well designed and super functional. You are much quicker with a Rubik's Cube than I'll ever be, I'm closer to 3 minutes. But I just really enjoy it, and I have invested time into learning a few methods to solve verses memorizing tons of unique algorithms. If you're curious I would look into the Roux Method as a fun alternative. Thank you for your awesome content!

    Wonderful video! One small point: Sun dropped development of OpenOffice years ago. It was picked up by the Gnu community and is now LibreOffice, and with the defaults set to Office filter types there should be no issues with Excel files :)

    I like the origin of your TH-cam name. How you got into fountain pens was very cool. For me it was a student in the 6th grade that was using a cheap Scripto fountain pen. It was so interesting that I asked my Mom to get one for me. It was a messy experience, 😉.

    My first pen was a Pilot Metropolitan. My second was a Jinhao X750.
    My current favourites are a Jinhao 80 with a Lamy 1.1 nib with Lamy Turquoise cartridges for daily use, (I love the shading with this ink), and a Jinhao X159 in black and chrome with Quink blue black bottled ink. It makes me feel like a president when I use it on my desk. The round Pilot Blue Black is a with the ink miser fitting looks very grand as well.
    I also have a Jinhao X750 shimmering sands finish with a Bock 1.1 nib and Pilot blue black bottled ink. That's it.
    What would I recommend for a beginner; it would definitely be a Jinhao 80 with Lamy cartridges.
    The only reason for not recommending the Lamy Safari is the bossy grip. You vil hold your pen like this!
    But, hey, some people like the grip so go ahead. It's a well built pen with nibs which are very easy to swap.

    I wonder if, like me, you have other hobbies? For me it's fountain pens and wristwatches but above all audio. The audio obsession flowed from my love of music, which is life-long. Tube amps, solid state class A amps, two turntables (no microphones), speakers, DACs... Like Toad from Toad Hall, it's always something.

    I have a question perhaps somewhat related to some of those you no longer want or need to answer, though I hope it is different enough to be worthy of a reply. I am basically just starting to explore the world of fountain pens, and I see everyone using a three-point grip when holding a pen. I have always held pens between my thumb and index finger (at the bend of the first knuckle). Because of that, I'm wondering what sort of design might work best. I've seen pens that are more round at the grip and others (Lamy I think is one brand) that have a grip area that seems more designed for the traditional three-prong grip. Or am I over thinking this? Thanks.

      You should have more respect for David. He is not saying don’t ask questions. David is saying let’s streamline the process. He has made a video with all the answers so he can refer people to it. Spending time answering the same questions time after time becomes tiresome and provides less time for new subjects. Goulet Pens also refer people to specific videos rather than repeat themselves. David is quite aware how important his followers are and does the show for them.
