I run mine thru a 1 by 12 and 2 by 12 cabs and it sounds huge and the 12 inch speakers eliminate all of the fizzyness . I find it easier to get vintage tones out of the 5cr than I can from my 40cr . The ultra gain on the 5cr seems to be voiced quite differently from the ultra gain on the 40cr
I personally find the classic gain cranked gives a nice chunky AC/DC esque overdriven sound, I like it :) Regardless, that clean really shines, thumbs up from me overall, great small amp, great video my guy
Interesting how clean your Classic Gain channel is 🤔 When I push mine above 4 (10 o'clock) in volume it distorts and gives me a great AC/DC sound. I also use a Schecter with active Seymour Duncan's too so that may be why! 😅
A 10" Celestion Creamback is a great speaker replacement for this amp, too. Smooths it out considerably. The Classic Gain channel is an outstanding pedal platform. I prefer driving the Classic Gain with a variety of dirt pedals to the Ultra Gain for even the highest of gain sounds.
Great review - didn't know the clean channel has gain and volume on the new versions, all the other reviews shown it with gain only, (including Marshall's own!) which must relate to the older version, considering one now it has that update 👍
Classic Gain is a joke: i play both volume and gain on 10, take a quite hot bridge p90 and play a powerchord -> completely clean! Otherwise the amp is perfect. Awesome video, thanks!
I would say that is not necessarily a bad thing. Often 5w amps are too compressed to even have a “clean” channel once you turn it up a bit, especially with hotter pickups. Guess just use an OD pedal on classic channel to get your crunch.
@@VintageRadius you are right! i didn´t want to sound to negative about it. the amp has got enough gain ready on the other channel and you can also use pedals. it is a amp with the best sound for the bedroom for my taste. i tried fender and vox but couldnt get good sound at low volumes.
No issues with the review. It just seems like a lot of these amps nail really clean tones, and heavy distortion tones, but suffer when it comes to the mid level OD tones, like SRV for example. Pedals are probably the answer. But I do wish that on that ones I tried the High gain channel it didn't go into heavy distortion so quick and had more range.
Thank you for review! Did you record the audio by using emulated line out or miking the speaker? I am asking this because i want to learn if line out is good enough for recording and also is it noiseless enough for home use?
Distortion is amazing but ....seems to me this demo is showing that HB pickups react too flat and cold to clean channel if compared with typical strat single coils... I mean, if you consider it’s a tube amp we are miles away from a jazz tone or a rock sound with character...
I live in a flat. I am wondering if you crank the amp in 1 watt mode too activete the tubes, does it gets too loud for the flat? Can you compare it with a every day TV loudness or it gets much louder?
3:28 how did you get that clean sound with the gain all the way up to 10? I just had my DSL5Cr today, but I can't get it to sound this clean. Great tutorial, thanks for that, helped me decide to pick this amp up.
Might be a problem with the amp... I also have a DSL5CR and I don’t get any break up with gain and volume at 10. I guess I have the opposite problem as you because I want that overdriven sound.
Mykola, thanks for the review ! I have a question. Comparable to Katana Mk2 regarding of the souls quality and number of sound and effects which model will be the winner ?
Very different amps Elena....the Katana is a 50w modelling amp and this Marshall is a classic little valve combo. Both are brilliant but the Boss wins on variety of sound, I'd have the DSL lol.
@@MrHardguitar but if both DSL5CR (5W mode) and DSL20CR (10W mode) are OK for home?) DSL20CR has more classic gain, you even can get some crunch wit humbuckers. I can't choose. :) Really like both.)
Do you think this it an ok amp for a beginner or a medelling amp like fender mustang would be better . I want to play hard rock and i'm more intrested in high gain sounds
If you're a beginner, I would get the Fender Mustang. There are a lot of options and you can add in all different effects and see what you like. You might end up liking something completely different than you thought. You can also really get crazy with the signal chains and biasing and stuff if you want. ***BUT*** a lot of the Mustang presets are garbage so there is a lot to sift through. I have a Mustang GT-100 that I'm looking to upgrade to this DSL5CR or a Blackstar MK II HT5. My Mustang also does this weird thing where the volume/gain starts to drop out randomly and I have to restart it. I have read of it happening to other people so make sure you jam on one for at least 20-30 minutes before you buy it.
But of course this is just my opinion. If you're really set on high gain then this Marshall is probably a better choice. Less stuff to screw with and more time to practice. Up to you!
Hi. Have a little problem. Was trying to mic my brand new Marshall dsl5 combo with sm57 and got an interference humming going from the power button of amp. In this situation I cannot mic my amp with close mic position. Is it OK? Thanks
When you were demonstrating the "Ultra Gain" channel at its most aggressive gain level, you said, you weren't sure what to call that type of sound; that would be considered a "metal" or (this is an older term: ) "heavy metal" sound. (These days, most people just say "metal.") That's generally the heaviest style of rock (and it has many subcategories these days).
Older model better, has proper classic gain. It’s also full valve with a valve phase inverter these new CR versions have a MOSFET PI. The reverb is pretty weak too so better off with old version and reverb in the loop.
awesome review! Can somebody tell me though, what is that cable on the right hand side corner at the back? plug it out and connect to an external cab or what???
You're correct. It's connected to the internal speaker, which you can also replace/upgrade. Just make sure your replacement speaker/cab matches the ohms/impedance for your unit.
Is the clean channel solid state? no break up at all, even at cranked gain and vol. Can some one please explain. My blackstar HT1 clean channel starts to break up at gain past 12 o'clock, like all tube amps, it shows pick dynamics as per how hard u strike the strings. But DSL 5CR does not.
@@Martian891 what do you mean by "take out phono"? Tube amps need the load from the speaker, if you use it without a speaker connected, it will damage the amp.
@@Martian891 Even my DSL20HR's manual mentions that never use it without a speaker, as it puts huge "pressure" on tubes and transformers, which can degrade or fail much quicker.

Why not? Two channels should be enough to play the blues. Or you can buy some light overdrive.
