One of my favorite things about this scene (other than all of it) is how the camera keeps cutting between Spike's left eye and his flashbacks. Fitting, because his left eye "only sees the past."
That's really cool. Then in the second to last scene of the series, the camera zooms in on his right eye and he finally sees Julia in the eye that sees the present.
I simply cannot get enough of this scene; I get tears and chills every time. It so well illustrates who Spike is, and shows you what's important to his story, even if you don't understand at this point in time. It also shows you Spike's outlook. He's not panicked, he's not struggling, he simply doesn't care if he comes out alive or not. He just looks back with sad reflection, as many of us do, knowing that very few stories stack up to this magnum opus of a show that we miss and hold so dearly.
I remember seeing this episode,Faye was one ungrateful bitch to spike for saving her worthless ass. Meanwhile she didn't lift one finger to help spike out when spike was fighting that thing in either episode 5,or six.
What I love the most about this scene is it explained Spike and Viscious' history in less than a minute. Most show's can't even do that in a single season today.

When i first saw this scene, late night on probably Toonami, or Adult Swim, It made me remember that Anime is art, after only being exposed to kid oriented anime for a too long.

I’m here after watching the live action adaptation, just to remember how flawless this scene was. You had one job Netflix. This was one of the most important scenes of Cowboy Bebop and you dropped the ball.
I'll never forget the first time I saw this scene and the series all together. I was six and was in the hospital because my sister had to have heart surgery. I had stayed up all night because I couldn't sleep thinking about it and stayed up watching shows like the Boondocks and Aqua Teen Hunger Force. Then later on this show I had never seen before came on and it had me loving it right when I heard Tank!! for the first time. I watched the whole episode which was The Ballad of Fallen Angels. The final scenes in the church cemented into my brain with the main one being the overhead shot of Spike walking into the church. Bits and pieces of this scene also became apart of my memory but I also remembered the Green Bird song perfectly. It would sometimes play in my head and I would be unsure where it came from. But later on I heard about how great an anime Cowboy Bebop was and decided to check it out and to be pleasantly surprised that this was in fact the very same anime I had watched all those years before. Goes to show how well executed this scene was.

I've heard that Cowboy Bebop was and is more popular in America than in Japan. I don't know if that's true or not though. I personally, as an American, think this short lived series is perfect in every category.

For the longest time, I thought this was part of the last episode of the whole show. My cable had gone out the first time I saw this for 2 minutes, and I thought Spike died, that's the end.
I love that in this scene Vicious asks “why” are you still alive, not how. It’s not any sort of incredulousness at Spike being alive, it’s a simpler question. “If you’re no longer the ravenous beast I knew, then WHY are you? What is your purpose without that?”
It's like Vicious is trying to reassure himself that he's alive, by being the way he is. Spike is an affront to his very life, by virtue of being more then a bloodthirsty animal. Vicious doesn't accept that, because then he'd be admitting that he's really nothing beyond his work as a hired killer, something Spike has been able to surpass him in.

In Session 1, Laughing Bull foretells of Spike's death being brought on by a woman. Laughing Bull: Swimming bird will meet a woman. The bird will be hunted by this woman. And then death. Spike: One more time. Laughing Bull: What's that? Spike: I was killed once before by a woman. Spike is speaking of Julia. Losing her love was so painful as to be considered a form of death. He was left in a detached dream-like purgatory from that day on. In Session 26, Julia is shot in front of Spike. White doves fly by in slow motion. Horror, shock, and agony are expressed in Spike's left eye. He screams her name, drops his weapon, and runs to her. He takes her in his arms. Hears her last words, which are inaudible to the audience. Spike looks down at his lost love and then up to the sky. The camera is now focused on Spike's right eye, which is shaking in a disturbing manner. The camera zooms into Spike's pupil and everything fades to black. The next scene is of Laughing Bull predicting Spike's imminent death. Holding Julia's coat, Vicious speaks of Spike. Vicious: A beast that has lost his place. He has nowhere to return to now. He will come. Vicious is both right and wrong. Spike will come, but he does have somewhere to return to one last time. Two rose petals are shown blowing away in the wind. Spike returns to the Bebop and tells Jet a story. An allegory about his life which he uses to explain why he will never return. Spike: There once was a tiger striped cat. This cat died a million deaths, revived and lived a million lives, and he was owned by various people who he didn't really care for. The cat wasn't afraid to die. Then one day the cat became a stray cat, which meant he was free. He met a white female cat, and the two of them spent their days together happily. Well, years passed, and the white cat grew weak and died of old age. The tiger striped cat cried a million times, and then he died too. Except this time, he didn't come back to life. Jet is keenly aware that Spike's death looms in the horizon. He is wary of the tale's implications. When Spike gets up to leave, Jet asks him one last question. Jet: Is it for the girl? Spike: [beat] She's dead. There's nothing I can do for her now. This is true. Julia is dead. There is nothing Spike can do for her. This does not lessen the impact she has on the events that are about to unfold. Jet understands this. Upon hearing of Julia's death, he has a resigned if devastated reaction. He knows exactly what this means for Spike. Faye confronts Spike while holding him at gunpoint. She knows that he is marching towards his death. Faye: Where are you going? Why, are you going? Before I knew it, the dream was all over. This is not the first time Spike has expressed this sentiment. One of his most revelatory quotes was said in the teaser for Ballad of Fallen Angels. Spike: The music box is broken, or is it? It starts to play, and a haunting tune fills the air. I wake suddenly from my dream. There is no music box! And yet there it is. A tiny one nestled in my hand. And I awaken from my dream again. As if I were peeling an onion. It’s a dream no matter how far I go. I can never reach reality. Trapped in an endless nightmare. Spike is so affected by the loss of the woman he loves that even an item she once possessed haunts him. It is her death that has finally woken him from his detached dream-like state. Faye shares with Spike that her memory has returned. She explains that there was nowhere for her to go back to. She pleads with him to stay. Spike ignores her please and instead leaves her with these parting words. Spike: I’m not going there to die; I’m going to find out if I’m really alive. I have to do it, Faye. Faye is not comforted by this statement. The audience should not be comforted either. Spike's words eerily echo what Jet said to him in session 25. Jet: Men only think about the past right before their death, as if they were searching frantically for proof that they were alive. Faye cries and shoots off her gun. An act reminiscent of the 21-gun salute that is used in the military to honor the fallen. Spike walks away from Faye without looking back. He is never shown thinking about anyone from the Bebop again. The song "See You Space Cowboy" plays as Spike leaves the Bebop. "Everything is already over", You say with closed ears The words only flow Towards a tomorrow without peace "There's nothing that won't change" Even if my life ends This love will not disappear It's something that will live forever Even if dreams are hidden in darkness I got a rainbow Rainbow in your hands... The camera zooms in on Spike's left eye. The eye that sees Spike's past. The lyrics begin as Spike is recalling romantic memories of Julia. He thinks of the first time he saw Julia and was captivated by her beauty. He thinks of a time when he made love to Julia and she cradled him in her arms. Given that Spike confided to Jet just the previous session that Julia was a part of him, the image shows a moment in Spike's life when he felt whole. Spike: She was a piece of me I had lost. She is my other half that I had longed for. The song continues to play as Spike attacks the syndicate. It is a ballad of undying love alluding to lovers being reunited in the afterlife. When Spike faces off against his hated rival, Vicious makes a proclamation. Vicious: So, you're finally awake. I told you before, Spike. I'm the only one who can kill you and set you free. Spike does not deny this. But makes a proclamation of his own. Spike: Those words apply to you as well, Vicious. During their fight, there comes a moment where the two disarm each other by swapping weapons. Vicious getting Spike's gun and Spike getting Vicious's katana. It is at this moment that Spike makes a statement of great significance to both men. Spike: Julia passed away. Let's end it all. Vicious: If that's your wish. The rivals return their weapons. Spike shoots Vicious but gets sliced across the abdomen. Vicious's death comes quickly, while Spike lingers as was foreshadowed. Vicious: Don't forget, a snake's venom poisons slowly after the bite. Spike watches Vicious's body fall to the ground, spends but a few of seconds looking at him, then looks up to the night's sky. The camera is focused on Spike's right eye. Now calm. Spike sees Julia. This is the first time in the entire series that Spike is shown seeing Julia with his right eye. In session 13, during an auditory flashback, Spike and Julia discuss his eyes. Spike: My left eye sees the past. Julia: What about your right eye? We do not hear his response. In the penultimate scene of the series, we are specifically shown what Spike sees with his eye that sees his present. He sees her. In Spike's vision, Julia is cast in a white light. She says her last words to Spike, this time they are audible to the audience. Spike is shown reflected back in Julia's eye. He glumly concurs with her. Spike is then completely engulfed by a blinding white light. The scene fades to white. This light is reminiscent of the divine light that is cast upon a soul that is ready to ascend to heaven. Julia: It's all a dream. Spike: Yeah. Just a bad dream. From white we transition to the final scene of the series. It is now day. A white light is now cast over the entire syndicate. Spike smiles, points a finger gun at the remaining syndicate goons and says "bang". This is a callback to Wen from session 6. As Wen was dying he asked Spike if he understood the relief that came with one's own death. In response, Spike threw Wen's harmonica up in the air, pretended to shoot it while saying "bang", but then said "as if". When Spike says "bang" this time he is acknowledging that he now understands that relief. Spike falls to the ground. He is never shown moving again. White doves are shown flying over Spike's body. White doves also flew by Julia when she died. The camera follows an ascension into the heavens, while the song "Blue" plays. The song's lyrics allude to a soul ascending to heaven. Free Wanna be free Gonna be free And move among the stars You know, they really aren't so far Feels so free Gotta know free Please Don't wake me from the dream It's really everything it seems I'm so free No black and white in the blue Everything is clearer now Life is just a dream, you know That's never-ending I'm ascending At the end of the credits a star goes out but never falls. In session 13, Laughing Bull informs the audience to what a falling star truly is. Laughing Bull: The tear of a warrior. A lost soul who has finished his battle. A pitiful soul who could not find his way to the lofty realm. Where the great spirit awaits us all. Given that the star we are shown does not fall, it is reasonable to infer that the soul the star belonged to did make its way to the great spirit that awaits us all. That soul has broken away from the cycle of death and rebirth and is never coming back. As was foreshadowed to happen to Spike in the fable of the tiger striped cat, who followed his love into death and never returned.

Just how it's written in the show and how it can all be interpreted is absolutely insane. you notice they keep going to spike left eye where he see the past and have a flashback of how this whole situation happened between him and one time his best friend it's one of the important keys I feel a lot of people miss and never understand
If this is about the commonly perceived tendency to look left when recalling memories, then it might be worth pointing out that drawing a left eye simply is easier than a right. It could totally be intentional though-choosing the left eye to represent his flashbacks. Great anime do tend to put a lot of thought into their sequences.
This! This was the moment I found out that there was this world of unbelievable storytelling, animation, and something that I was missing from my life....I can't tell you how much this scene means to me....it's probably the reason I'm alive to be honest...

Lupe Seriously, I was watching a random review of one of those CGI Netflix originals (I believe Knights of Sidonia) and the asshole reviewing it just randomly spoiled Bebop's ending without warning for no god damn reason. It pissed me the hell off, and the ending probably would have been more shocking had that not been the case.

Glad to see the incredibly memorable falling-out-the-window scene that subtly shows the mysteries of Spike's past with no dialogue or over-the-top acting is regulated to an overly dramatic, slow-mo highlight reel of the flashback episode that was shown right before this episode. Also, loses ALL its visual impact, because instead of a slow-mo explosion that fits the flood of emotions and images Spike witnesses during his supposed plummet to his death, it's just him being shot with a gun and stumbling backwards even more awkwardly than Uncle Ben's killer in the first Spider-Man movie.
@Poop Jones I'm 34 and I grew up with CB. I didn't mean "ruined" the original, but they took the name Cowboy Bebop and made a disaster. Of couse the original will allways be there. Of course no one will remember the netflix version, but it was pretty painful to see at the time.
This scene is just so damn memorable. In fact, this episode feels so cinematic. Out of all the episodes of Cowboy Bebop, this one sticks to me the most. Just a really good episode IMO
I remember watching for the first time during bebop’s first run in the US when I was 11-12 in 2001……..my jaw was on the floor ……it opened up an entire new art form for me as a kid. To this day I think it’s the essentially the best episode of an anime ever created
This remains one of the single most incredible background summaries I've ever seen of any character in any story. Spike's backstory flashes before us literally in a blaze and you really, truly begin to understand not only the extent of the damage he's had to endure, but also the power he has to keep living after that. Also, we see Vicious, his nemesis, for the first time, and what a nemesis! The villains of the story tend to define how clever, resourceful, willful, wise or strong the protagonist is, because you need to be better than the villain in the end if you're the hero, and Spike beats Vicious every time. Another important thing happens. Vicious appears in the series five times and it only takes the creators that long to flesh out a villain worth every penny. You don't feel confusion or doubt about him... you fear him and you despise him and yet he's perfect and admirable in terms of character development. This whole anime I regard as the best I've ever seen, and it's because of scenes like this one. Significant dialogues, beautiful scenery, great references, lovely action sequences and a soundtrack that sways the heart. What else can you ask from a show?
I just can’t get over how I absolutely love how the show doesn’t treat its audience like idiots and feel the need to tell us everything. We learn more about Spikes past, his relationship with Julia, the companionship with Vicious and the Syndicate than most shows today in a whole season. They did all that in a minute without a single word. It lets us use our brains, try and connect the dots and let’s us draw our own conclusions to what it means.
I am 68 years old. I didn’t know anything about anime but when my son showed this to me, I cried. A whole tragic story heartbreakingly told in a few minutes.
Paul C judging by how fast he falls it looks like only 2-1 second passes between spike falling and the grenade exploding. A plausible way Vicious could've escaped a grenade with that big explosion would've been if he jumped off.
Spike will continue to defy death for as long as Vicious remains alive . This scene wasn't the first time where Spike "died" I just kind of wish they elaborated more on Spike and Vicious history, though these flashback scenes gave us some idea of their history
You can attend a whole class on analyzing why this scene, the music, and characters are great and iconic for anime. Too bad Netflix slept through the lesson and "attempt" to make ""improvements"" They brought back the dunce cap
The first time I saw this scene, I was in awe. This is the point where I fell in love with Cowboy Bebop. You could tell how much Spike, missed being with Julia. This scene is a MASTERPIECE!
Fun thing to note, either as a production oversight or a very clever bit of character enhancement, even after the explosion goes off the reflection in Spike's eyes continues to show the sky as if he doesn't even care about what happens to Vicious or if his grenade even went off, he only wants to look at the clouds.

That brief shot of Spike and Vicious back to back tells us what we need to know about the two instead of an entire episode dedicated to a flashback. Cowboy Bebop isn’t that far from the norm but the way it executed these things is what makes it a classic
One time in choir class, we sang an F major scale up to the fifth note, and I immediately recognized it as the scale used in this song(it's the one that is first sung at 0:53) and I smiled spontaneously in class.

Why Vicious walked off a gunshot wound: it’s heavily implied Vicious consistently takes Bloody Eye which increases his reaction time and adrenaline, as well numbness to pain. Netflix Vicious: good actor bad direction.
I have lost my closest friend for a girl. All of my other friends have abandoned me,I have been alone now,starting a new life, completely alone. All I ever have is her memory. Men like Spike,pretend to wash their past away but deep inside they live in the past with all the memories of their Julias.💔
That samething happened to me. This is his sixth "girlfriend". What's worse is she's only using him and he refuses to see it. She doesn't love nor care about him. He's driven everybody away because of her. We were best friends for a decade and he backstabbed me. He never trusted me and thinks I'm an awful person just because I'm autistic. The last thing he did was insult both myself and my boyfriend. I tried to let him go and forget about him but couldn't. This resulted in a breakdown causing me to spend a week in a mental health clinic (willingly) because my depression went into overdrive. I don't need him and no longer consider him a friend. Should he come crawling back he won't be given any mercy.
My partner broke up with me a relationship nearing 4 years just with in days she broke up its been years but the pain remains it felt like dying that night still hurst even after 3 years later
I remember trying to convince my parents to let me watch this show on adult swim when I was like 6 or 8 years old. I would try to stay up passed 10pm to catch a few minutes until my parents shut it off. This was about 20 years ago when we didn't have smartphones, streaming and high speed internet.
This is the real ending. I think that was the original intention, but they probably thought it was just too heartbreaking. But I will always consider this the real ending, with Spike dying instead of being saved, of course.
I love that there's no fear in Spike's eyes as he falls, only sad reflection.

I'll never forget the first time I saw this scene and the series all together. I was six and was in the hospital because my sister had to have heart surgery. I had stayed up all night because I couldn't sleep thinking about it and stayed up watching shows like the Boondocks and Aqua Teen Hunger Force. Then later on this show I had never seen before came on and it had me loving it right when I heard Tank!! for the first time. I watched the whole episode which was The Ballad of Fallen Angels. The final scenes in the church cemented into my brain with the main one being the overhead shot of Spike walking into the church. Bits and pieces of this scene also became apart of my memory but I also remembered the Green Bird song perfectly. It would sometimes play in my head and I would be unsure where it came from. But later on I heard about how great an anime Cowboy Bebop was and decided to check it out and to be pleasantly surprised that this was in fact the very same anime I had watched all those years before. Goes to show how well executed this scene was.

I've heard that Cowboy Bebop was and is more popular in America than in Japan. I don't know if that's true or not though. I personally, as an American, think this short lived series is perfect in every category.

I love that in this scene Vicious asks “why” are you still alive, not how. It’s not any sort of incredulousness at Spike being alive, it’s a simpler question. “If you’re no longer the ravenous beast I knew, then WHY are you? What is your purpose without that?”
It's like Vicious is trying to reassure himself that he's alive, by being the way he is.
Spike is an affront to his very life, by virtue of being more then a bloodthirsty animal. Vicious doesn't accept that, because then he'd be admitting that he's really nothing beyond his work as a hired killer, something Spike has been able to surpass him in.

Viscous is living pretending he's moving forward. Spike is stuck in his past. One is a fool because he doesn't realize he could change, the other is a tragedy because he couldn't see that he already did.

In Session 1, Laughing Bull foretells of Spike's death being brought on by a woman.
Laughing Bull: Swimming bird will meet a woman. The bird will be hunted by this woman. And then death.
Spike: One more time.
Laughing Bull: What's that?
Spike: I was killed once before by a woman.
Spike is speaking of Julia. Losing her love was so painful as to be considered a form of death. He was left in a detached dream-like purgatory from that day on.
In Session 26, Julia is shot in front of Spike. White doves fly by in slow motion. Horror, shock, and agony are expressed in Spike's left eye. He screams her name, drops his weapon, and runs to her. He takes her in his arms. Hears her last words, which are inaudible to the audience.
Spike looks down at his lost love and then up to the sky. The camera is now focused on Spike's right eye, which is shaking in a disturbing manner. The camera zooms into Spike's pupil and everything fades to black.
The next scene is of Laughing Bull predicting Spike's imminent death.
Holding Julia's coat, Vicious speaks of Spike.
Vicious: A beast that has lost his place. He has nowhere to return to now. He will come.
Vicious is both right and wrong. Spike will come, but he does have somewhere to return to one last time.
Two rose petals are shown blowing away in the wind.
Spike returns to the Bebop and tells Jet a story. An allegory about his life which he uses to explain why he will never return.
Spike: There once was a tiger striped cat. This cat died a million deaths, revived and lived a million lives, and he was owned by various people who he didn't really care for. The cat wasn't afraid to die. Then one day the cat became a stray cat, which meant he was free. He met a white female cat, and the two of them spent their days together happily. Well, years passed, and the white cat grew weak and died of old age. The tiger striped cat cried a million times, and then he died too. Except this time, he didn't come back to life.
Jet is keenly aware that Spike's death looms in the horizon. He is wary of the tale's implications.
When Spike gets up to leave, Jet asks him one last question.
Jet: Is it for the girl?
Spike: [beat] She's dead. There's nothing I can do for her now.
This is true. Julia is dead. There is nothing Spike can do for her. This does not lessen the impact she has on the events that are about to unfold. Jet understands this. Upon hearing of Julia's death, he has a resigned if devastated reaction. He knows exactly what this means for Spike.
Faye confronts Spike while holding him at gunpoint. She knows that he is marching towards his death.
Faye: Where are you going? Why, are you going? You told me once, to forget the past, ‘cause it doesn’t matter, but you’re the one still tied to the past, Spike!
Spike does not deny this. Instead, he explains the truth about his eyes. The camera spans from his left eye to his right eye.
Spike: Look at my eyes, Faye. One of them is a fake because I lost it in an accident. Since then, I've been seeing the past in one eye and the present in the other. So, I thought I could only see patches of reality, never the whole picture.
Faye: Don’t tell me things like that; you’ve never told me anything about yourself, so don’t tell me now!
Spike: I felt like I was watching a dream I could never wake up from. Before I knew it, the dream was all over.
This is not the first time Spike has expressed this sentiment. One of his most revelatory quotes was said in the teaser for Ballad of Fallen Angels.
Spike: The music box is broken, or is it? It starts to play, and a haunting tune fills the air. I wake suddenly from my dream. There is no music box! And yet there it is. A tiny one nestled in my hand. And I awaken from my dream again. As if I were peeling an onion. It’s a dream no matter how far I go. I can never reach reality. Trapped in an endless nightmare.
Spike is so affected by the loss of the woman he loves that even an item she once possessed haunts him. It is her death that has finally woken him from his detached dream-like state.
Faye shares with Spike that her memory has returned. She explains that there was nowhere for her to go back to. She pleads with him to stay.
Spike ignores her please and instead leaves her with these parting words.
Spike: I’m not going there to die; I’m going to find out if I’m really alive. I have to do it, Faye.
Faye is not comforted by this statement. The audience should not be comforted either. Spike's words eerily echo what Jet said to him in session 25.
Jet: Men only think about the past right before their death, as if they were searching frantically for proof that they were alive.
Faye cries and shoots off her gun. An act reminiscent of the 21-gun salute that is used in the military to honor the fallen.
Spike walks away from Faye without looking back. He is never shown thinking about anyone from the Bebop again.
The song "See You Space Cowboy" plays as Spike leaves the Bebop.

The camera zooms in on Spike's left eye. The eye that sees Spike's past. The lyrics begin as Spike is recalling romantic memories of Julia. He thinks of the first time he saw Julia and was captivated by her beauty. He thinks of a time when he made love to Julia and she cradled him in her arms.
Given that Spike confided to Jet just the previous session that Julia was a part of him, the image shows a moment in Spike's life when he felt whole.
Spike: She was a piece of me I had lost. She is my other half that I had longed for.
The song continues to play as Spike attacks the syndicate. It is a ballad of undying love alluding to lovers being reunited in the afterlife.
When Spike faces off against his hated rival, Vicious makes a proclamation.
Vicious: So, you're finally awake. I told you before, Spike. I'm the only one who can kill you and set you free.
Spike does not deny this. But makes a proclamation of his own.
Spike: Those words apply to you as well, Vicious.
During their fight, there comes a moment where the two disarm each other by swapping weapons. Vicious getting Spike's gun and Spike getting Vicious's katana. It is at this moment that Spike makes a statement of great significance to both men.
Spike: Julia passed away. Let's end it all.
Vicious: If that's your wish.
The rivals return their weapons. Spike shoots Vicious but gets sliced across the abdomen.
Vicious's death comes quickly, while Spike lingers as was foreshadowed.
Vicious: Don't forget, a snake's venom poisons slowly after the bite.
Spike watches Vicious's body fall to the ground, spends but a few of seconds looking at him, then looks up to the night's sky. The camera is focused on Spike's right eye. Now calm.
Spike sees Julia. This is the first time in the entire series that Spike is shown seeing Julia with his right eye.
In session 13, during an auditory flashback, Spike and Julia discuss his eyes.
Spike: My left eye sees the past.
Julia: What about your right eye?
We do not hear his response.
In the penultimate scene of the series, we are specifically shown what Spike sees with his eye that sees his present. He sees her.
In Spike's vision, Julia is cast in a white light. She says her last words to Spike, this time they are audible to the audience. Spike is shown reflected back in Julia's eye. He glumly concurs with her. Spike is then completely engulfed by a blinding white light. The scene fades to white. This light is reminiscent of the divine light that is cast upon a soul that is ready to ascend to heaven.
Julia: It's all a dream.
Spike: Yeah. Just a bad dream.
From white we transition to the final scene of the series. It is now day. A white light is now cast over the entire syndicate.
Spike smiles, points a finger gun at the remaining syndicate goons and says "bang".
This is a callback to Wen from session 6. As Wen was dying he asked Spike if he understood the relief that came with one's own death. In response, Spike threw Wen's harmonica up in the air, pretended to shoot it while saying "bang", but then said "as if". When Spike says "bang" this time he is acknowledging that he now understands that relief.
Spike falls to the ground. He is never shown moving again. White doves are shown flying over Spike's body. White doves also flew by Julia when she died.
The camera follows an ascension into the heavens, while the song "Blue" plays. The song's lyrics allude to a soul ascending to heaven.

At the end of the credits a star goes out but never falls.
In session 13, Laughing Bull informs the audience to what a falling star truly is.
Laughing Bull: The tear of a warrior. A lost soul who has finished his battle. A pitiful soul who could not find his way to the lofty realm. Where the great spirit awaits us all.
Given that the star we are shown does not fall, it is reasonable to infer that the soul the star belonged to did make its way to the great spirit that awaits us all.
That soul has broken away from the cycle of death and rebirth and is never coming back. As was foreshadowed to happen to Spike in the fable of the tiger striped cat, who followed his love into death and never returned.

If this is about the commonly perceived tendency to look left when recalling memories, then it might be worth pointing out that drawing a left eye simply is easier than a right. It could totally be intentional though-choosing the left eye to represent his flashbacks. Great anime do tend to put a lot of thought into their sequences.

Lupe Seriously, I was watching a random review of one of those CGI Netflix originals (I believe Knights of Sidonia) and the asshole reviewing it just randomly spoiled Bebop's ending without warning for no god damn reason. It pissed me the hell off, and the ending probably would have been more shocking had that not been the case.

The good news is that it could have been worst, the bad news is that it sucks anyway.
Glad to see the incredibly memorable falling-out-the-window scene that subtly shows the mysteries of Spike's past with no dialogue or over-the-top acting is regulated to an overly dramatic, slow-mo highlight reel of the flashback episode that was shown right before this episode.
Also, loses ALL its visual impact, because instead of a slow-mo explosion that fits the flood of emotions and images Spike witnesses during his supposed plummet to his death, it's just him being shot with a gun and stumbling backwards even more awkwardly than Uncle Ben's killer in the first Spider-Man movie.

I remember watching for the first time during bebop’s first run in the US when I was 11-12 in 2001……..my jaw was on the floor ……it opened up an entire new art form for me as a kid. To this day I think it’s the essentially the best episode of an anime ever created

Watching this as a palette cleanser. Those who have seen the new live action monstrosity will get it.
This remains one of the single most incredible background summaries I've ever seen of any character in any story. Spike's backstory flashes before us literally in a blaze and you really, truly begin to understand not only the extent of the damage he's had to endure, but also the power he has to keep living after that. Also, we see Vicious, his nemesis, for the first time, and what a nemesis! The villains of the story tend to define how clever, resourceful, willful, wise or strong the protagonist is, because you need to be better than the villain in the end if you're the hero, and Spike beats Vicious every time. Another important thing happens. Vicious appears in the series five times and it only takes the creators that long to flesh out a villain worth every penny. You don't feel confusion or doubt about him... you fear him and you despise him and yet he's perfect and admirable in terms of character development.
This whole anime I regard as the best I've ever seen, and it's because of scenes like this one. Significant dialogues, beautiful scenery, great references, lovely action sequences and a soundtrack that sways the heart. What else can you ask from a show?
I just can’t get over how I absolutely love how the show doesn’t treat its audience like idiots and feel the need to tell us everything. We learn more about Spikes past, his relationship with Julia, the companionship with Vicious and the Syndicate than most shows today in a whole season. They did all that in a minute without a single word. It lets us use our brains, try and connect the dots and let’s us draw our own conclusions to what it means.

Paul C judging by how fast he falls it looks like only 2-1 second passes between spike falling and the grenade exploding. A plausible way Vicious could've escaped a grenade with that big explosion would've been if he jumped off.

The first time I saw this scene, I was in awe. This is the point where I fell in love with Cowboy Bebop. You could tell how much Spike, missed being with Julia. This scene is a MASTERPIECE!
Fun thing to note, either as a production oversight or a very clever bit of character enhancement, even after the explosion goes off the reflection in Spike's eyes continues to show the sky as if he doesn't even care about what happens to Vicious or if his grenade even went off, he only wants to look at the clouds.

That brief shot of Spike and Vicious back to back tells us what we need to know about the two instead of an entire episode dedicated to a flashback. Cowboy Bebop isn’t that far from the norm but the way it executed these things is what makes it a classic
One time in choir class, we sang an F major scale up to the fifth note, and I immediately recognized it as the scale used in this song(it's the one that is first sung at 0:53) and I smiled spontaneously in class.

That samething happened to me. This is his sixth "girlfriend". What's worse is she's only using him and he refuses to see it. She doesn't love nor care about him. He's driven everybody away because of her. We were best friends for a decade and he backstabbed me. He never trusted me and thinks I'm an awful person just because I'm autistic. The last thing he did was insult both myself and my boyfriend. I tried to let him go and forget about him but couldn't. This resulted in a breakdown causing me to spend a week in a mental health clinic (willingly) because my depression went into overdrive. I don't need him and no longer consider him a friend. Should he come crawling back he won't be given any mercy.

I remember trying to convince my parents to let me watch this show on adult swim when I was like 6 or 8 years old. I would try to stay up passed 10pm to catch a few minutes until my parents shut it off. This was about 20 years ago when we didn't have smartphones, streaming and high speed internet.

This is the real ending. I think that was the original intention, but they probably thought it was just too heartbreaking. But I will always consider this the real ending, with Spike dying instead of being saved, of course.
