Apparently, I fell in love with Kathe Green's voice many years ago.

So funny. I saw this movie years ago (and was in a production in college--I played the Milkmaid) but it never occurred to me until today, as I was watching a video of "I'd Do Anything" as a possible song for one of my voice students, that it wasn't a young boy's voice, but a woman singing like a boy! So of course I checked, and here it is. I identified that as a female voice immediately--now that I'm an adult and a trained singer, anyway. She did a good job.

So much for innocence....I'll be 62 next week and have watched Oliver! numerous times, always believing it was his sweet voice. Oh well. It is what it is.

Actually the then (1967) eleven years old English boy Roger Bowman claims it was he that dubbed Mark's singing voice. Maybe they recorded Kath Green too, but in the end used Roger's recording.

Her father Johnny Green confirmed that she did the role years ago. Women are able to do boys voices sometimes even better than actual boys, just to note when she did the voice she was younger too and her vocal still matches the voice she used way back when. She was 20 years old then and got paid about £400 pounds $1,000. They probably had real boys audition but chose Kathe. I mean who'd you pay? Some random person or your own flesh and blood? I think Johnny Green chose his daughter who had experience in being able to impersonate a choir boy. Just because someone claims something on a random fun trivia doesn't mean it is true. That voice in Oliver is obviously a woman impersonating a boy, and even this video of her doing the actual singing voice which syncs perfectly with the original voice, you still believe that someone else did the role? She wouldn't take credit for someone else's work.

And who exactly is Roger Bowman? He doesn't seem to exist. Kathe as a singer went on to release two albums and three singles - where she would then sing in her natural womanly voice. As said they had probably auditioned many boys for the part, but instead they decided to go with Kathe Green, as Mark Lester couldn't sing to save his life and he even admitted it. It was Kathe Green's father the musical director who made the choice. And of course they would have people audition, but in the end they probably decided to make a quick change so of course the boy would get paid for his recording, and then think or claim he had done the singing. Seeing Kathe Green do the voice is enough proof that she did the role. Oh, P.S women do the roles of boys all the time (and some sound like actual boys) that also includes "singing voices" as said previously. If you get any proof to back up your claim, then I'll understand, but this video is proof enough that Kathe Green did the role - you can't duplicate that voice.

I don't have to prove anything, as I'm not the one who is claiming anything and I don't know one way or the other. Roger is the one who has to prove it.

All of my research brought me to Kathy Green. There is absolutely no mention of Roger Bowman. Here is what I've found forums.digitalspy.com/discussion/779788/mark-lesters-voice-was-dubbed-in-oliver. There is absolutely no mention of Roger Bowman.

Why? Many classic Hollywood movies have had the leads dubbed. Arguably the most famous of all singers to dub others was Marni Nixon, who filled in for some very famous women in equally famous films - Deborah Kerr in The King and I, Audrey Hepburn in My Fair Lady, and Natalie Wood in West Side Story. Nixon didn't have the acting chops to be a leading actress, they didn't have the singing talent to carry off the numbers - perfect marriage of talent! :)
Funny enough, what I know Kathe Green best for his her role in a classic Peter Sellers/Blake Edwards film, The Party - probably the best thing they did together, strong elements of Jacques Tati, and even better than the Pink Panther films. The only downside to the film is that these days Sellers portraying an Indian would be deemed unacceptable, even though many Indians, including Indira Gandhi, loved it, and it even influenced some Bollywood films in later years.

@@timbowilderbeeste8709 I know, you're right...I'm just disappointed that Oliver's voices was dubbed by a girl. There were many fine boy treble voices they coughs have used. The voice is beautiful no matter who sang it.

@@jimbuxton2187 Agreed. For years I wasn't aware that it had been dubbed. I loved the film when it came out - I was about Mark Lester's age at the time it came out - still am Mark Lester's age, as a point of fact. lol
