Man I can't count how many times I've watched this video. I get inspired to try doing it myself every time. I just got myself a Quad Cortex after being a long time Helix user which I sold around 2 years ago and after watching this again I realize I can do pretty much the same routing in the QC but instead of running backing tracks myself I'm gonna take a TRS from our mixer into the QC return to hear the rest of the band and just monitor through the headphones like this. Even gonna take your cabling idea and stay wired to my board since our stage is gonna be tiny anyway. Once I get enough to go wireless no doubt I will watch your other setup 100 times too... Thank you for the inspiration my man!
Cool setup, thanks for sharing! I also use the PS170 & Mesa 2x12 for stage volume. However, I use a long instrument cable and keep the PS170 on top of my cab. Just curious why you use a long speaker cable instead? Not using in-ears yet, but now you’ve got me curious.

Hi! To be honest using the DI can be avoided if you send your monitor mix to 1/4in only(and listen to them thru the phones out, you just need to set it up in the in/out settings) and the guitar signal just to XLRs, so you don't need to use sends.

Nice vid Gerry, thanks. Have a question, my idea is to do this. Guitar into the guitar-in of the helix, both xlr outs to the FOH (stereo patches is the idea), and from the mixing board getting a mix of my guitar only and another mix of the whole band, that going into return 1 and return 2 of the helix. Would I be able to hear through the headphones out with IEM my guitar mix only on one side and the whole band mix on the other side? (Having also an eq block on that path to be able to do the eq myself as needs). And while the FOH is playing my xlr outs stereo patches with no problem, and myself being able to hear my stereo IEM from headphone out easily? Would all of this be possible? Haven’t seen anyone talking about this particular setup only. It would be appreciated the answer. Thanks in advance!

Looks pretty decent even though Sound Cues seems more streamlined. Might have to consider buying a cheap iPad even though I can't stand Apple products. About sending the Tracks to Front of house - if the tracks you play from the phone are click on the left and backing track on the right, than this mean the actual backing track you are sending to the DI and then FOH is Mono, correct? Or am I missing something? And the metronome comes from the backing track (iPhone) as well?

Hi Gerry, very nice setup. How do you feel your tone translates to your IEMs? Do you have a separate EQ for that signal? I tend to have a very harsh sound when using high gain tones. Cleans are OK though. Cheers.
Thank you! I feel like a lot of this actually depends a lot on the actual IEMs themselves. In this video, I was using the Sure 215's (of which I still use a lot today for regular use like listening to music), but like you mentioned they can get very harsh especially when you're cranking them during a loud show. Since this video was made, my rig has changed drastically (I'll make a video on it in the future) and along with that, I'm now using the Westone AM Pro 30s. Upon first listen, they sounded kind of dark and I thought they lacked high end, but once you crank them, they really don't get harsh and since they have an ambient port on them, I'm also hearing stage volume and my drummer so I get the best of both words now! How do I connect a microphone (SM58) to the Helix so I can have one chain for the guitar and the other one for the vocals? You have four different signal chains.

LOVE the idea of combining the instrument cable and headphone cable in a loom. I do this to connect my amp head to my pedalboard in 4 cable method, I will have to try this as well!
Hey, you should check multitracker for ios, it's a more professional app for backing tracks, if you hook it into a multiple out interface as a zoom u24, you could have a separate click and backing track, both in stereo and with a separate additional audio out for FOH

Awesome video man, that was a really smart way to combine both your Guitar cable and headphone extender cable! I've been downsizing my rig for a while now, I just can't decide between a Line 6 LT, HX Stomp, or the new Mooer floor board. How are the Distortion amps on the Line 6 LT?
Thank you! Hmm, hard to say since I haven't tried the new Mooer board, but boy does that thing look sick! It depends on the I/O really. If you need to be able to do the crazy routing that I'm doing, then go for the LT. If not and you can live with just 6 blocks of either amps or effects, then go with HX Stomp! I'm hoping to get one some day so I can keep one in my gig bag. As far as the distortions amps, this is a biased answer since I'm a huge Line 6 guy, but they're great! I use the Archetype Lead model for pretty much everything, but I've used the PV Panama for heavy rhythm tones and the Placater Dirty for less gainy tones in the past!

Thank you! These days I'm using the Helix Rack with a laptop that plays the backing tracks and triggers Snapshot changes. I'll make a video on it at some point, but this old setup was great when I was using it!
@@핸더랜드-r7c Hmm, it might be difficult since (at least with my Helix presets) I'm using up all 4 lanes to accommodate the guitar and the tracks. I'm using two lanes for my guitar, one lane for the click and one lane for the tracks. If you can manage use only one lane for you guitar, that gives you an extra lane to work with. Then all you have to do is change the input of that free lane to MIC and now you should have vocals too. I hope that helps!
You can ask me anything you'd like! Absolutely you can. To use it in the configuration that I have for the video, all you would need to do is plug the headphone out of the Helix into whatever wireless monitor system that you have. My rig has completely changed since I've made this video and I am now using the Helix Rack kAND a wireless IEM system. I hope to make a video about it in the future! But how did you edit the video in a way that let you show and hear all the different signals coming and going from the Helix and amp and DI all back to back? Seems like a nightmare trying to record all that and then figure out how to edit it all together the way you did!!!
In order for everyone else to hear my in-ear mix, I had to use a headphone splitter and then I recorded all of the sources using my interface into Pro Tools. From there I took the tracks and soloed/muted whichever ones I was showcasing in Adobe Premiere Pro. It wasn't that difficult actually!

Thank you! I've tried other power amps and the SD PowerStage 170 is the only one that feels like an actual tube amp. These days I to have a high and low cut in my presets, but only the direct feed is affected by that.
Hey man, I recently came across a spider valve mkii. It's got a power amp input. I'm planning to run my helix into the power amp for stage noise. I still want to send a signal to FOH. Should I use the full amp models, or just use the preamps because the spider valve has a tube power amp? Would the IR sound ok with just a preamp model?
Oh sick! Well, if you want to be able to send a signal to the Spider Valve and FOH, I would probably use the full amp model instead of the preamp model since you're going to want the full amp sound hitting the PA. I've briefly experimented using a full amp model and a preamp model with a power amp/cab situation and the full amp model generally sounded better to me, plus that's what Line 6 recommends in their video where they demonstrate how to hook up the Helix with a power amp. th-cam.com/video/3UDt-hwddso/w-d-xo.html
@@GerryTrevino right. The video is for a power amp and cab though, not the power section of a guitar amp. That was my only concern. It is certainly louder then the preamp models.

I now have a drummer and my live rig has changed dramatically since then. I'm utilizing the Helix Rack instead of the LT, a laptop for backing tracks and preset changes, a Shure wireless in-ear system and a Motu audio interface so that I can route everything properly and hear everything that I need to hear. Thank you so much! Not silly at all. Feel free to ask me any questions and I'll try to answer them to the best of my ability. Not sure if you mean that you're using your Helix with a real amp in say the 4 cable method or just the stock cabs within the Helix. These days I'm using the stock cabs and have been getting great results with them without resorting to using IRs. However, if you're trying to do the same sort of in-ear monitoring with a Helix and a real amp, that might be a bit more challenging to configure!
Blown away by the SoundCue app. I do the same thing with a headphone cable and a VDI cable to power my Variax and IEMs. Keep rocking man new subscriber looking forward to more great content.
Anyone else feel kinda dumb after this? I've been playing live for years & this guy knows WAY more than me about everything lol. And, he's clearly a fucking genius. I LOVE that 2 into 1 cable he mad for his IEM. I go wireless, but that's a badass idea he made. I'm going completely to modeling & poweramp for the rest of my life. I have a Helix full floor, an HX Stomp also. Trying to get my rig as small as humanly possible. So I'm trying out the HX Stomp with a Seymour Duncan PS170 & a coupe pedals, since the Stomp only has 6 blocks. What I asked in a different video a few minutes ago is this. What are your thoughts on the PS170 & a cab VS just the modeler into a powered FrFr? My cabs are heavy lol. I haven't had the chance to check put both scenarios myself due to alot of stuff being in storage for the past couple months. I was leaning towards a Gemini powered FrFr. A lighter & sound beautiful. I hope you read this comment & respond. You're the genius here, not me. Like I said, trying to get the absolute smallest rig setup I can. No more 4x12, amp heads, pedalboards, wireless, IEM, stage monitors etc. Just too much shit nowadays. Seems the only way to go is a modeler with a powered FrFr or, a modeler with a PS170 & a cab. Btw, you have a lot of talent & personality. Most ppl probably don't realize the drama involved in making good quality videos like yours. That shit is SO time consuming & technical as well. And your awesome different camera angles is GREAT.

@@HugoSR258 I figured it all out. There is no wrong answer. I'll do both scenarios. Seymour Duncan PS170, with Stomp into 1x12 cab. And also Stomp into powered FrFr. Also Stomp into FOH. Any scenario works perfectly.

Combining the in ear cable and your guitar cable that was is brilliant! ANother option, I suppose would have been guitar wireless, in ear wired (you didn't seem to want to do wireless for the in ears).
Thank you! I'm not opposed to having either wireless system, I just wanted this rig to be as condensed as possible. The next iteration of my live rig will actually have a wireless in-ear system along with the Helix Rack!
So I'm planning on getting a Helix. I'm between lt and floor. My main reason for the floor is actually the headphone volume control independent of the other volume. How do you control headphone volume independent of send?
It is true that to control the headphone volume on the Helix LT you'll need to use the Master Volume knob. However, since I'm using sends within the Helix to feed my guitar signal to FOH, the master volume doesn't mess with the send volume, thus I control my headphone volume with the Master Volume knob and FOH gets an unaffected guitar signal. Hope that helps!

Nice vid Gerry, thanks. Have a question, my idea is to do this. Guitar into the guitar-in of the helix, both xlr outs to the FOH (stereo patches is the idea), and from the mixing board getting a mix of my guitar only and another mix of the whole band, that going into return 1 and return 2 of the helix. Would I be able to hear through the headphones out with IEM my guitar mix only on one side and the whole band mix on the other side? (Having also an eq block on that path to be able to do the eq myself as needs). And while the FOH is playing my xlr outs stereo patches with no problem, and myself being able to hear my stereo IEM from headphone out easily?
Would all of this be possible? Haven’t seen anyone talking about this particular setup only.
It would be appreciated the answer.

However, there's an app equivalent called Audio Cues in Google Play store. Looks pretty decent even though Sound Cues seems more streamlined. Might have to consider buying a cheap iPad even though I can't stand Apple products. Lol ohh well 🤷🏻♂️
By the way, love your Sonic influenced blue skin for your Helix! I bought a Deep Space color change skin and a full faced screen protector from Gear By Ceba as well and LOVE it. About sending the Tracks to Front of house - if the tracks you play from the phone are click on the left and backing track on the right, than this mean the actual backing track you are sending to the DI and then FOH is Mono, correct? Or am I missing something? And the metronome comes from the backing track (iPhone) as well?

Hi Gerry, very nice setup. How do you feel your tone translates to your IEMs? Do you have a separate EQ for that signal? I tend to have a very harsh sound when using high gain tones. Cleans are OK though. Cheers.
Thank you! I feel like a lot of this actually depends a lot on the actual IEMs themselves. In this video, I was using the Sure 215's (of which I still use a lot today for regular use like listening to music), but like you mentioned they can get very harsh especially when you're cranking them during a loud show. Since this video was made, my rig has changed drastically (I'll make a video on it in the future) and along with that, I'm now using the Westone AM Pro 30s. Upon first listen, they sounded kind of dark and I thought they lacked high end, but once you crank them, they really don't get harsh and since they have an ambient port on them, I'm also hearing stage volume and my drummer so I get the best of both words now! Why do you need a power stage for your cab ? Can't you play your cab with the Helix preamp ?
You need some sort of power amplifier in order to power your speaker cabinet! The signal coming out of the Helix unfortunately just won't cut it!

How do I connect a microphone (SM58) to the Helix so I can have one chain for the guitar and the other one for the vocals? You have four different signal chains.

Hey, you should check multitracker for ios, it's a more professional app for backing tracks, if you hook it into a multiple out interface as a zoom u24, you could have a separate click and backing track, both in stereo and with a separate additional audio out for FOH

Awesome video man, that was a really smart way to combine both your Guitar cable and headphone extender cable! I've been downsizing my rig for a while now, I just can't decide between a Line 6 LT, HX Stomp, or the new Mooer floor board. How are the Distortion amps on the Line 6 LT?
Thank you! Hmm, hard to say since I haven't tried the new Mooer board, but boy does that thing look sick! It depends on the I/O really. If you need to be able to do the crazy routing that I'm doing, then go for the LT. If not and you can live with just 6 blocks of either amps or effects, then go with HX Stomp! I'm hoping to get one some day so I can keep one in my gig bag. As far as the distortions amps, this is a biased answer since I'm a huge Line 6 guy, but they're great! I use the Archetype Lead model for pretty much everything, but I've used the PV Panama for heavy rhythm tones and the Placater Dirty for less gainy tones in the past!

@@핸더랜드-r7c Hmm, it might be difficult since (at least with my Helix presets) I'm using up all 4 lanes to accommodate the guitar and the tracks. I'm using two lanes for my guitar, one lane for the click and one lane for the tracks. If you can manage use only one lane for you guitar, that gives you an extra lane to work with. Then all you have to do is change the input of that free lane to MIC and now you should have vocals too. I hope that helps!

You can ask me anything you'd like! Absolutely you can. To use it in the configuration that I have for the video, all you would need to do is plug the headphone out of the Helix into whatever wireless monitor system that you have. My rig has completely changed since I've made this video and I am now using the Helix Rack kAND a wireless IEM system. I hope to make a video about it in the future! But how did you edit the video in a way that let you show and hear all the different signals coming and going from the Helix and amp and DI all back to back? Seems like a nightmare trying to record all that and then figure out how to edit it all together the way you did!!!
In order for everyone else to hear my in-ear mix, I had to use a headphone splitter and then I recorded all of the sources using my interface into Pro Tools. From there I took the tracks and soloed/muted whichever ones I was showcasing in Adobe Premiere Pro. It wasn't that difficult actually!

Thank you! I've tried other power amps and the SD PowerStage 170 is the only one that feels like an actual tube amp. These days I to have a high and low cut in my presets, but only the direct feed is affected by that.

Hey man, I recently came across a spider valve mkii. It's got a power amp input. I'm planning to run my helix into the power amp for stage noise. I still want to send a signal to FOH. Should I use the full amp models, or just use the preamps because the spider valve has a tube power amp? Would the IR sound ok with just a preamp model?
Oh sick! Well, if you want to be able to send a signal to the Spider Valve and FOH, I would probably use the full amp model instead of the preamp model since you're going to want the full amp sound hitting the PA. I've briefly experimented using a full amp model and a preamp model with a power amp/cab situation and the full amp model generally sounded better to me, plus that's what Line 6 recommends in their video where they demonstrate how to hook up the Helix with a power amp. th-cam.com/video/3UDt-hwddso/w-d-xo.html
@@GerryTrevino right. The video is for a power amp and cab though, not the power section of a guitar amp. That was my only concern. It is certainly louder then the preamp models.
@@AndrewStonerock Plugging into a power amp and cab is the same idea as going into the power amp/FX return of a guitar amp.
Well, kind of. But yeah, the helix power amp modeling doesn't seem to be fighting against the actual power section any.

@@benjaminauer788 Oh, no worries! In the beginning when I first started I was completely alone, so what you see in the video is what people saw live. I now have a drummer and my live rig has changed dramatically since then. I'm utilizing the Helix Rack instead of the LT, a laptop for backing tracks and preset changes, a Shure wireless in-ear system and a Motu audio interface so that I can route everything properly and hear everything that I need to hear. Love this man! Good work. I'm new to the Helix family so I apologize if my question is kind of silly. I don't use IRs, I use real amps, so how would I achieve this signal chain? Is it the exact same just without the IR blocks selected? If anyone knows please inform me! Thank you in advance!
Thank you so much! Not silly at all. Feel free to ask me any questions and I'll try to answer them to the best of my ability. Not sure if you mean that you're using your Helix with a real amp in say the 4 cable method or just the stock cabs within the Helix. These days I'm using the stock cabs and have been getting great results with them without resorting to using IRs. However, if you're trying to do the same sort of in-ear monitoring with a Helix and a real amp, that might be a bit more challenging to configure!

Blown away by the SoundCue app. I do the same thing with a headphone cable and a VDI cable to power my Variax and IEMs. Keep rocking man new subscriber looking forward to more great content.

Anyone else feel kinda dumb after this? I've been playing live for years & this guy knows WAY more than me about everything lol. And, he's clearly a fucking genius. I LOVE that 2 into 1 cable he mad for his IEM. I go wireless, but that's a badass idea he made. I'm going completely to modeling & poweramp for the rest of my life. I have a Helix full floor, an HX Stomp also. Trying to get my rig as small as humanly possible. So I'm trying out the HX Stomp with a Seymour Duncan PS170 & a coupe pedals, since the Stomp only has 6 blocks. What I asked in a different video a few minutes ago is this. What are your thoughts on the PS170 & a cab VS just the modeler into a powered FrFr? My cabs are heavy lol. I haven't had the chance to check put both scenarios myself due to alot of stuff being in storage for the past couple months. I was leaning towards a Gemini powered FrFr. A lighter & sound beautiful.
I hope you read this comment & respond. You're the genius here, not me. Like I said, trying to get the absolute smallest rig setup I can. No more 4x12, amp heads, pedalboards, wireless, IEM, stage monitors etc. Just too much shit nowadays. Seems the only way to go is a modeler with a powered FrFr or, a modeler with a PS170 & a cab.
Btw, you have a lot of talent & personality. Most ppl probably don't realize the drama involved in making good quality videos like yours. That shit is SO time consuming & technical as well. And your awesome different camera angles is GREAT.

I figured it all out. There is no wrong answer. I'll do both scenarios. Seymour Duncan PS170, with Stomp into 1x12 cab. And also Stomp into powered FrFr. Also Stomp into FOH. Any scenario works perfectly.

Combining the in ear cable and your guitar cable that was is brilliant! ANother option, I suppose would have been guitar wireless, in ear wired (you didn't seem to want to do wireless for the in ears).
Thank you! I'm not opposed to having either wireless system, I just wanted this rig to be as condensed as possible. The next iteration of my live rig will actually have a wireless in-ear system along with the Helix Rack!

So I'm planning on getting a Helix. I'm between lt and floor. My main reason for the floor is actually the headphone volume control independent of the other volume. How do you control headphone volume independent of send?
It is true that to control the headphone volume on the Helix LT you'll need to use the Master Volume knob. However, since I'm using sends within the
Helix to feed my guitar signal to FOH, the master volume doesn't mess with the send volume, thus I control my headphone volume with the Master Volume knob and FOH gets an unaffected guitar signal. Hope that helps!
@@GerryTrevino that's what I figured. I ran a similar in ear setup with the HD 500. Through a fx loop. Far less complicated outside of that. Just got an LT today. So excited! You earned a subscriber with your ingenuity! I love it!!
