I like the smaller touches to this game. For a game built on the goldeneye engine, its got a lot of ambitions. Breakable lights, the gun can be shot out of your enemy's hand. The enemy can draw a sidearm if that happens or they can surrender. Secondary function for most of the guns. Unarmed melee is improved. etc. The only problems I see are graphical, and that's a nit-pick for a 20, almost 21 year old game.
I will add that the level design is mostly dreadful and was criticised even at launch. Too many identical and symmetrical corridors (particularly on Pelagic II and Attack Ship) with no hints and you were just left feeling dizzy and fed up. Crash Site is also a total rabbit warren. That, and Perfect Agent is IMO just sadistically and unnecessarily hard. There's no need for that. It was also just a case of enemies being harder and doing more damage while the opposite was true for you. Very much of its time and not really acceptable now.
@@deserthobo the combat isn't even hard on modern systems with mouse input. gitting gud in this game is mostly rote memorization of all the cheap "gotcha" moments they threw in to pad a 2 hour campaign out to 10 hours. wouldn't be such a problem if the levels were designed more fairly, if there was health regeneration or if enemies couldn't take out 70% of your health because of something you couldn't possibly see coming
2:00-3:41 this entire cutscene is just incredible writing that i always loved as a kid and teen, and it's still impressive to rewatch as an adult, even despite the visual quality's own aging.

The characters in this game were ahead of their time. Cassandra, Trent, and Mr. Blonde were excellent villains with great designs. If Perfect Dark is ever revisited and expanded upon I hope their characters get more time to shine and be fleshed out.

Here's hoping Microsoft will recognize the potential of its intellectual property and do something with it. I would buy a next-gen Xbox (was it "Series S" or something, I don't know) for a new Perfect Dark _alone._
I bought the expansion pack for my N64 awhile ago and I'm glad that I did, because the prices for those are ridiculous. Like $50 or more. I think I bought mine for $10 or $15.
I listened to that cutscene so many times going for the cheat on this mission that I ended up memorizing it. 20 years later I can still recite most of it lol
There's actually a mistake in the script. Mr. Blonde refers to "backup plans" in quotes even though nobody actually said it. They said "contingency plans".
I just pulled out my son's old 64 and been playing this game because of being stuck in , really enjoy watching your videos of each mission but damn your good hard to keep up with you , to see what has to be done 👍👍to you my friend , you are good 😈☠👍✌✌
Another method you could have approach is the one I did back then. I remember my brain activated this weird method 😆. Plant the CamSpy right outside the meeting area but do not enter. Reach the area where the giant safe door has to open. Once that sequence activates, open up your CamSpy and go into the meeting to initiate the cutscene with Trevor and Cassandra. Once the cutscene ends the safe door will be open and you can avoid all that shooting. That's how I was able to unlock the Cheat 😎
does anyone agree with me that the Mr.Blond is better in perfect dark n64 than in the new perfect dark game. to me i think he sounds more evil and ark in perfect dark n64

Playing this game for the 1st time. Seems like im stuck in this level, neither door is blown up st the end. I found the n bomb at the top floor so i guess i bombed the top door in the prev lvl but its sealed
what does the japanese writing on the wall say? there are three symbols when Joanne walks down the stairs and the first symbol is for "heaven" and the next two I cant identify... that critical writing on the wall that I cant read
I find they are not always reliable. I usually switch it to proximity mode and stick it somewhere. But as soon as the guards come, they walk through the blast without dying
One thing I never understood about this game. Why didn't they allow you to combine the falcon 2 scope with the silencer. All the while, the guards are shooting, wouldn't they call in for back-up. Wouldn't the other guards hear their loud guns going off? And these guards have some of the same faces. Did they somehow come back to life?
About the guard's faces - there were only so many faces that could be used. Goldeneye was the same way. They wouldn't come back to life though (in case you weren't being sarcastic about that idea). Sometimes other guards hear the gunshots and show up or sound alarms. It depends on if multiple people are around. A combination scope & silencer would be great though
So, you decided to do the harder way? The harder way is to defend yourself while waiting for the safe to open. The easy way is to record the meeting after placing the door decoder. But, that's okay, I know you're a good player.

The voice actor for Trent does a forced American accent that makes him sound utterly psychotic - it suits his character.
It's the same actor as Daniel Carrington. The actor is Chris Sutherland, who was one of Rare's lead programmers at the time.

Yes and no. It was definitely too much for the N64 at times, but playing it on an emulator isn't the same as the original hardware.

The middle part of the level is one of my favorite parts of the game, but the beginning with cloaked guards and the ending are very meh to me.
If you notice the blonde guy has a slightly weird voice, almost robotic or fake.
