I loved it The underlying story being the Skedar trying to capture the Cetan's Megaweapon So they can destroy the Maians and dominate (The Cetan being a third alien race, the ship is alive) I thought it was a well written story in that respect They left so many possibilities for a PD 2
I remember how hard it was for me to figure out as a child how to beat the Skedar king. I remember most guides said you had to "destroy the shrine", but none did ever mention you had to target that symbol behind him! I was always busy destroying those pillars supporting the ceiling/walls.
There's another hidden aspect to this level that we were shown by an adult when we were kids. If you blow up the obelisks with devastator wall hugger feature there's a set of phoenix suns that you can use the explosive rounds. So when you fight skeddar with the slayer all the missiles blow up right away and it's significantly easier to beat.
This game was a labour of love....theybwent above and beyond to make a bond style game with their own IP and had fun with it. The reason why they don't make games like this anymore it's because everyone's in it for the money especially now. This was all about creative fun
@@Matanumi this is the best game I ever played. Goldeneye is the second best game I ever played. Tried gears of War, doom eternal, black ops... All shite probably for the reason you said.
The Skedar have to be the most terrifying alien race I’ve ever seen in anything, ever. They look like something out of a schizophrenic’s worst nightmares... with those bird-like heads of theirs and their totally unpredictable, ridiculously aggressive nature (especially when they have weapons) still scares me.
They seem to be based at least partially based on the lizard people many conspiracy theorists believe disguise themselves as world leaders to control the world.
It's crazy how easy this game is on mouse 'n keyboard, just beat it for old time's sake. I really dig your content dude, I'll be sharing it with friends~
I still remember as a kid almost giving up on the first mission since I couldn't find the elevator to progress further. Then this boss got the better of me - I never beat it. But what a fun game this turned out to be - So many memories!
Clarissa McPigeon That's debatable. I know some games that look and play like dogshit on the PS1 but play and look better on the N64. Examples: The World is Not Enough and Gauntlet Legends were FAR more superior on the N64.
13:42 Ken Lobb. They named the worst gun ever after him, so he quit and went to go work for Microsoft. His face is used as a possible bad guy face in both Goldeneye and Perfect Dark.
Yeah the klobb was named after him but he thought it was hilarious. Watch some of the Rare Replay interviews. He talks about his time on GE and PD very fondly, there's no hard feelings
Never noticed how distinct the two alien races are in design until I was older. The Maians have a more elegant, simplistic style in their how their technology and weapons look. The trope of the good guys in any situation. I'll root for Elvis everyday, but I dig the more brutal-mechanical aesthetics of the Skedar a lot more. Reminds me of H.R. Giger. *EDIT:* It's also neat that the differences also shows how both species like to exist. The Maians seem to be more superior in comparison, yet they prefer peace and honor. Meanwhile the Skedar use weapons which require magazines. Also how they design their arsenal and aircraft is more robust and horrific; signs of a legion which cares for nothing other than war.
Yeah and Mr. Blonde’s character and the way he talks can also give us another feel for how they act. And see things. Like how he saw Trent and likely also Cassandra as devices,
There actually was a proper sequel planned and pitched to Microsoft (2 of them) but they were turned down due to the xbox already having a handful of Scifi shooters (halo, gears of war, etc.) And believed that the games would not sell as well in the market.
There’s a new game coming that seems like it’s a prequel to Perfect Dark. The gameplay video really made me feel like it could actually be a good successor to the original.
It was a Gorgeous Game one year before the birth of Gamecube and Sadly Before Rare was acquired by Microsoft. Alternative Timeline:If Rare Rejects Microsoft we would have played Banjo Threeie and Perfect Dark Zero on Gamecube. I am forever grateful that I grew up with N64.
I always try to speed run this mission to get the cheat because this mission is very easy, even on Perfect Agent, since there's not that much skedars holding Reapers.
Thank you game for letting me know I had to shoot that sculpture to kill this thing. Would've been an inconvenience to look up a walkthrough to figure the cryptic objectives on each mission. Nice one Rare 👍
When people ask me what my favourite game of all time is. This. I spoke with a head dev who made yooka laylee. I said i recognised his voice. It was daniel. Lol
Great game, but I still think that the whole alien plot felt out of place. It seemed more the plot for a sequel which this game never got, nor even a follow up story. I would have preferred if this game had focused on the conflict between the two agencies (like the first 2/3 did)
In my view, what would make the ending better is Joanna and Elvis returning to Earth and a rebuilt Carrington Institute, and she's welcomed back by all the Maian soldiers CI staff.
i never understood perfect dark as a kid. I only bought it cause it was the new goldeneye. Had fun multiplayer, but i never understood the story. I don't remember ever finishing this mission on perfect agent.
The "official" guides/walkthrough always left out the part where you had to shoot the priest so he would lower the shield on the statue to recharge his own, THEN you shoot off a piece of the statue. Then repeat until you win.
I didn't know that was how it's done. I watched my brothers play this game/mission on co-op and they just kept shooting until the statue fell apart. I tried myself (on Agent - hey, I was young lol) and couldn't understand how it worked.
It took me six years of trying on and off, lol. Got the game at launch, had several failed attempts at beating this, and took me until Easter 2006 when I sat down and beat this mission on the first try in months. No idea how.

As much as I love the old N64, this game belonged on a PC. The emulation is soooo fluid, smooth and responsive.
If only Rare and Microsoft were convinced to port their Perfect Dark remaster in 2010 on PC.
I always thought the N64 was a bit of a dog, to be honest with you. The PlayStation was more fluid and looked better.
