    You got a much better tour than I got! I spend about 90 seconds on the hangar deck on the hangar deck of the Nimitz in the summer 1986 when I was 15. The Nimitz was stationed in Norfolk at the time, and I had gone with a friend's family to Virginia Beach for a week. His older brother was a new Air Force doctor and came to spend a few days there. This was the summer of 'Top Gun', and I was an aviation geek from childhood, so his brother decided to take us over the Norfolk Naval base since he could get us on with his military credentials. Surprisingly we were able to drive right up to the piers, so we parked right by the pier where the Nimitz and the U.S.S. Iowa battleship were both moored. There was no guard or anyone standing watch, so we walked over to the walkway that led up to the hangar deck, gave each other a quizzical look, and then the older brother started walking up. So we followed. We got to the top, on to the deck (actually on of the elevators for the airplanes, but it was at the hangar deck level) and stood there, looking around. Suddenly a sailor came running over to us and said that he was very sorry, but they could not do tours that day, so we'd have to get off. But he did say they were doing tours of the Iowa. So we walked back down, and ended up getting a great tour of the Iowa. But that is the story of my 90 seconds on the U.S.S. Nimitz in the summer of 1986.

    YOU SHOULD BE VERY PROUD INDEED!
    If your Dad made Admiral and has command of an Aircraft Carrier group, he has no doubt done some incredible work in his life. Very few ever make that grade in a lifetime. Thank you for your service Admiral! I've no doubt you have worked extremely hard and made many many sacrifices in the course of your career. Special thanks to your wife and family who have no doubt made more than their share of sacrifices as well. People rarely consider this, but some of us know how hard it is on service families who support our men and women in arms. Thank you so much for your support. Without you none of these great people could have done what they have done for a successful military career. We honor you for your contributions.

    I am a Canadian Air Force veteran and i have been station at Barber Point Naval Air Station in Hawaii back in 1975 for a RIMPAC exercise with our Argus aircrafts detachment and had the chance to visit an aircraft carrier at Pearl Harbour, so thanks to your dad for his outstanding service since the US have always been part of the freedom that Canada enjoy as a US ally.

    Your Dad’s an Admiral? Cool! Glad you got to see what he calls “The Office”. GORGEOUS looking ship there! I’d hope one of these days that ship, or one just like it, a supercarrier, would become a museum for the rest of the public to enjoy and marvel.

    Nice looking family. My understanding is that the carrier has a captain, in charge of the ship. The Admiral lives aboard the carrier and is in charge of the fleet that sails with, and protects, the carrier.

      That is correct he's in charge of the entire strike group not just the Carrier.

    • @brandenl4223
      @brandenl4223 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      actually, the women get it nicer since there has to be separate living spaces made for them because they want to "server" as well, and it would be sexist if we made them equal to men by giving them crap

    • @hindgb
      @hindgb 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      as a fact there are a tiny amount on women on board any ship compared to men, and navy rules dictate men and women cannot share living spaces, so having separate rooms for the much smaller number of women is pretty standard

    This is why you become an officer. Aspire to become flag rank. Average of 26 yrs. service to sit in that seat. Aviator, Command a deep draft vessel, second in command of any naval vessel with impeccable record and maybe you too could be an admiral.

    They focsle on a carrier all spiffy and what not because they hold church services, ceremonies, etc. there. All it takes is one anchor drop to trash it. Anchoring a carrier is a big evolution.
