@@IZE83L I've never heard of this until this video, it sounds like a bs sales scam to me. In the mid 90s Dupont came out with "chrome allusion". At that time it was the only chameleon paint that I knew of, it was around 350.00 for a pint. The price came down over the years as it lost its hype and other paint manufacturers started producing it.
@@Kcii-99 well ford locked color as their personal creation and made it where nobody else can use it on their car, so if someone ever recreated it, it probably /would/ be illegal as some sort of copyright/trademark
@@ouynotun You can't copyright a color for general use in the United States. You can copyright it for a business logo, but not in the sense of "We own this color and no one else can use it." The reason this is "illegal" to do is because Ford has a contract with the owner of one GT that says Ford will not paint any other GT with that color. Some car companies have rules like that: "If you want our best car, you cannot paint it pink" is a rule for owning one of the Italian supercars. However, the strength of these contracts is dubious, as customers retain a right to modify anything that they own. To that end, most supercars are not properly owned, but rather they are leased, and the company can recall the car whenever they want. Basically, you can paint your Ford GT whatever color, but it might violate the contract you have with Ford and they can take civil action against you if you use this exact paint (or whatever other paint they don't want on their vehicles).
@@ovni2295 the word i was meaning to use is trademark. Its a specific created color. Many companies have trademarks on specific colors, though this is more for other brands copying their color the same concept applies and it is technically illegal to copy unless used for reference

Absolutely gorgeous automobile and, of course, the paint job is outstanding. I really liked hearing the history of both the car and the extraordinary paint.
@Alex Morrison Ford won't do any other GT in this colour, so if you don't steal the paint from Ford, which is illegal, or re-engineer it to exactly match the Mystichrome paint, which is impossible due to the color changing nature of the paint, you can't get a Mystichrome Ford GT. But the word illegal is still used very loosely.
@@Flying_Spaghetti_Monster Car painter here, we make this stuff about once a month, it's not hard at alllllll to make, we have light probes that we rest on a car to color match it and a machine that literally just pops up a code and from there if you have a really nice paint shop then it'll get automatically made, or you can do what we do and just weigh out the colors it says to mix and it's done, as far as the "mystichrome" bullshit, it's just green/purple pearlesence powder, you mix it in to the blue base coat. I'm serious this shit is incredibly easy to make, it's a mix of about 4 colors to get the correct shade of blue and then 2 types of powder, the G/P glitter and regular fine sivved silver glitter. So in summary, no it's not remotely "illegal" to paint your car this color, if it is then my and many other businesses are running a criminal empire lol. Also you can fine tune it to be any base color or pearlesence powder you want, purple base with Red/Blue pearlesence is super popular too.

@@amorton94 That doesn't make the paint illegal to apply to any other GT. There's nothing legally-speaking to stop some paint expert from reverse-engineering the color, producing it, and applying it to another car.
@@mwhite112393 I didn't say anything about the legality. Ford is in a legally binding contract, so they can't legally put the color on any other GT, so it's not entirely clickbait. It's been harder-to-impossible to match lesser crazy colors so the thought that "any shop can just reverse engineer it" is overtly naive.
That may be one of the most ridiculous things I’ve heard of. We used to do custom paint jobs all the time like this. People got ripped off all of the time like it was difficult to paint. It was incredibly easy to paint and covered very quickly, but people were told all kinds of stories like they needed twice as much paint while shops pocketed the money or kept the extra paint for themselves. Really it just became something people wanted because it seemed cool and fresh, but quickly became that one hit wonder nobody talks about anymore.
You can too have this color reproduced! Mystic Extreme as the guard called it in 1996, was the color changing ink used on the U. S. $100 note! @@prodbydead true, it is the only ford GT to have it, but its a question of, is that really going to drive the price up? I don't think it will, or if It does, it isnt going to be 100K's worth. I'd rather have bought an AE86, another Miata, and tons of fun cars for the price of that paint.
Stargun5502 yeah true, but when a car by itself is rare and is hard to get, the chances of the paint job making it raise in price over the years is probably gonna happen because it’s different and one of a kind of it’s paint
@@prodbydead maybe so, and I would imagine it'd raise the price up, I just dont think it'll make the investment back. Plus, i dont even think it's that pretty, I couldnt see the color change nearly as drastically as the other mystic chrome cars. If I'm honest, the most pretty "mystic chrome" like car I've seen was a Miata with Starlight blue Mica, which was black, midnight blue and purple. I just cant justify first off the price for a Level 5 color and the price for a paint that while it's good, very professionally done, it's kinda just a little special. it doesnt pop out a ton.

@@ouynotun You can't copyright a color for general use in the United States. You can copyright it for a business logo, but not in the sense of "We own this color and no one else can use it."
The reason this is "illegal" to do is because Ford has a contract with the owner of one GT that says Ford will not paint any other GT with that color.

The word “illegal” is being used rather carelessly here.
Yeah no kidding
@Alex Morrison no its literally against the law its illegal
