I have the Garvin expedition rack, best investment made. Solid build and you have several options like ladders and it easily handles a roof top tent and extra gear.
Those are a pretty sweet racks, only thing I didn’t like was the part to drill into the tub, this rack I made has been again modified I used heavier wall tube for both sides that run long ways with the tj. Replaced the 1x1 for 2x1 and it’s solid. Really love this rack. 🍻
The roof rack selection for TJ’s is so limited, it seems like fabricating your own is definitely the move. Yours came out really good!! I like how it contours, not bulky at all.
Looking sweet , keep an eye out on the tent clamps , I almost poked a hole in my soft top while in the tent, it bowed the bars just enough to touch the top. I just raised the rack slightly
Nice , I know exactly what your taking about because I seen that coming and ended up shimming the tent up higher off the crossbars and that also made the bolts shorter! Good catch and thanks for looking out!
it was a fun little project! I now have the rack on our green jeep as I’ve been working on the red jeep, new video on the latest camping trip coming soon! Thanks for watching 🍻
Damn it why did I choose wood and not metal! Now I have to learn how to weld. This is awesome what do you think weight is with the tent could two get in it easily?
I’m not sure , but metal is forgiving so it’s takes skill to precisely make craft from wood! You got this buddy! I’d say the the additional weight combined is around 180-200 lbs. about the same weight as another passenger, But let me double check on that! Thanks for watching 🍻
I appreciate your insight, and to some degree you are right , but 9-10 racks you buy on the market today for jeeps is mounting this way! And I’ve had zero issues in regards to this! Thanks for watching 🍻

limited options for sure, there was no way I was going to pay more for the rack than the rtt! Thanks for watching

What size tubing did you use? I’ve been looking to make something similar
Love the rack. I have an 88YJ. Just wondering, can you still remove and re-install the soft top easily.
Love YJs and Yes I can , I just tried it and works great 👍🏼. Thanks for watching!
looking to do a very similar build like this and new to the fabrication and jeep world. How many feet of square tubing did this take?
It’s was a fun little build. I’d say about 50 ft . Thanks for watching 🍻

Hey man wondering if you recommend buying the rockauto 5.4 and if yours is still doing good and how many miles have you put on it
The 5.4 is still running strong my dad has the truck now , it’s been good with around 25k on it ! Thanks for watching
Can you swap tops with your rack on an can I swap tops with store bought racks ?
I would have to unbolt the front of this rack and loosen the rear and swing it over the top and lay it down to swap tops. It’s definitely doable.
Can you let the top back, with the rack on there?
It is not a good idea to mount the rack (or anything) both on the body and the frame
