The interview was truly remarkable and highly informative; it left me enlightened. However, I couldn't help but feel dismayed by the segment discussing 1:52:30 banknotes. It's disheartening to acknowledge that we can do better. You should take a look at the 50 thousand commemorative banknote issued for the 70th Anniversary of Independence in 2013. It stands out as one of the most poorly designed banknotes, featuring not only an unattractive design but also glaring spelling mistakes. As a Lebanese stamp collector, I extend my scrutiny to stamp designs as well.
@1:09:20 As far as I know, many of the Turks in the Ottoman Empire did not consider themselves as Ottoman. Based on what I've heard from locals there, they consider Turks as being ruled by a minority of Ottomans (sort of like families or ethnic group), so there could be a dimension to the ethnic Turk naming..
What they meant was even the Turks never called themselves Turks. It was viewed as a derogatory word. Kemal Ataturk elevated the identity and made the slur into a source of pride. Turkish nationalism is very interesting
you guys are not talking history you're negotiating your status as citizens of a failed state. you just have to admit to yourself that it doesn't matter where you're from and what happened before. there are thousand of cities in the world . beirut is in no way special just chill about it
I hope people understand why now he is trying to get his stories to change the way young people were raised and confuse them. I'm not against free thinking but since fiction is never history
The sad part is this man Charles Hwyek trying to get attention for him self. Which is obviously moved him from a school teacher to AUB... the holly ground of the new Christians that was created by American Christian church with help of Israel. Well he is sadly reaching to the younger generation and he talks as if he telling a story to bunch of kids. Please do your own research if you want . I am not defending any church just it's the timing and his work raise many questions.
Wonderful! I love learning about our history with relevancy to modern times. Thank you very much

Everyone was deemed phoenician! It was the Muslims that rejected this identity!
The name of the other podcast? A female historian? Political bent? Last name Qatar?? So loved this conversation.

Mohammed Ali was Albanian.
So what i understand is that it is due to Muhammad ali and his son i rahim bacha that beirut became after a wilaya and capital later on
Loved that nationalism is an outdated idea
