Philip Quast will give you goosebumps performing Stars in this show. It had a few originals from the London cast. I believe Philip Quast was the second Javert behind Roger Allam. You mentioned that you are not big into musicals, but I think a bit of context here is helpful. This concert version of Les Miserables was put together to celebrate the musical's 10-year anniversary in 1997, and most of the principal actors were the original ones who created their roles when the London musical opened back in 1987. One of the major exceptions was the role of Eponine being offered to Lea Salonga instead of the original Frances Ruffelle at the insistence producer Cameron Mackintosh because of the magnitude of positive reviews Lea had gotten from playing the role on Broadway. If you appreciated this, then you should also look at Lea's performance in the same musical but a different role during the concert version of the musical's 25-year anniversary. Hi, yes Lea Salonga is the pride of the Asian performing community, mainly because of unique her vocal abilities. You mentioned that you are not big into musicals, but I think a bit of context here is helpful. This concert version of Les Miserables was put together to celebrate the musical's 10-year anniversary in 1997, and most of the principal actors were the original ones who created their roles when the London musical opened back in 1987. One of the major exceptions was the role of Eponine being offered to Lea Salonga instead of the original Frances Ruffelle at the insistence producer Cameron Mackintosh because of the magnitude of positive reviews Lea had gotten from playing the role on Broadway. If you appreciated this, then you should also look at Lea's performance in the same musical but a different role during the concert version of the musical's 25-year anniversary. Lea (pronounces”Lay-a”) is Broadway royalty. She got her first big break when she won the lead role in Miss Saigon, whose music was written by the same geniuses who brought us Les Miserables: Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Shonberg. You *really* ought to see the masterpiece that is Les Miserables, preferably on stage first.
This particular performance took place in 1995 at Royal Albert Hall and is the special 10th anniversary of Les Miserables....it was staged as a concert instead of the full-on play. The cast was hand-picked and called the “Dream Cast.” And like Miss Saigon, it further catapulted Lea’s success.
Lea is also Disney royalty, singing for both Jasmine in the original “Aladdin” and Mulan in the original movie “Mulan.”
She is phenomenal and has one of the clearest singing voices out there. My fave.
