You're confusing prison with jail. Jail is where you are held before trial, prison is where you serve your sentence. Only prisoners do this kind of labor. And who cares? They are in prison for committing a crime. The law system in the US is better than any other country.

Beyond that you're not just "paying for them", your money goes toward maintaining the prison building itself and making sure it's staffed with people who will make sure that the murderers don't sneak off in the night. That shit costs money.

You're being forcibly ripped away from society and forced to be around the most violent elements of it, some of which have no qualms with killing you if you get on their nerves. It's a miserable experience already without people thinking they should have to "earn" the basic human right of food.
