I’ve been digging on this live album since it came out in 2018. What I like most about this group of musicians is that they are just as proficient live as they are on the studio album recordings. As a drummer, I like to hear drummers take extra initiative when they are performing their material live. All of the musicians in Animals As Leaders do exactly that, in particular Matt Garstka does...full tilt! Like on this tune “Phys. ED” (and many of the other tunes on this live album) Matt will improvise (i.e. blow chops) over an under-lying vamp. The beauty of it is that he truly is improvising on the spot! Every time he plays this song live, it’s totally different. Even still, what he plays always sounds polished, proficient, tasteful and spot on! For me, slowing this recording down and figuring out everything he plays was the next best thing to picking his brain in person. I’ve dubbed this video as a method in intense Garstka Training simply because despite the amount of gracefulness and flow his playing exudes, it also comes jammed packed with aggressive agility and dexterity. So the endurance required to play this was something I had to develop. It took longer for me to get all this up to speed than it did to transcribe what he was doing. In other words, Matt Garstka is crazy-out of his mind!
