    Hi Josh!
Cabin crew in Australia here! We are allowed to use electronic devices while deadheading but are still expected to be professional and discreet on board. I think what made it look so bad in this instance is she was slouching and her attitude overall seemed very negative.
We can also deadhead in business attire if we choose to. We sometimes get upgraded but only if there’s spare seats. If we are regraded into business we get served last.

Same with I think all Canadian Airlines. We often deadhead in uniform occupying a passenger seat, in business class if there is empty seats. We are allowed to use personal electronic devices while deadheading. But of course must remain very professional. The posture and general air of that crew member in your video was indeed very unprofessional i agree.

I'm a Cabin Crew member myself, if this was me at my airline, I would get terminated at the spot. We board last and aren't allowed to use the phone at all while deadheading, not to mention to dine next to a paying customer. We are asked to stay professional whenever we wear our uniform since we are still brand ambassadors, on and off duty. But looking at her attitude she doesn't really seem to care and suffers from a massive attitude... ruining it for everyone else!

As a former Lufthansa flight attendant I totally agree.
And if we had to dine next to a passenger, the passenger was served first, and then I got my meal, wishing a kind 'bon apetit' to the customer. Alcoholic beverages were absolutely a no-go when in uniform, anywhere, even at the crew hotel.
But unfortunately, her attitude seems to be a global younger generation-problem, not only in India.

I'm crew for a US domestic carrier. As far as deadheading goes, crew do indeed travel in the cabin in uniform but they are still to be professional. Our crew can relax and be on their phones while sitting in the cabin as long as they are not jumpseat. Technically they are considered working crew but things are more relaxed for them as deadhead. I'm of course only speaking for my own carrier that I work for. Not sure what other US carriers rules are.

  • @LL-li3hp
    @LL-li3hp 2 ปีที่แล้ว +92

Hi Josh! American Airlines crew member here.
At AA when deadheading and occupying any seats other than the jump seat we are allowed to use our electronic devices and/or headphones. And we certainly enjoy this freedom which until I heard coworkers from other airlines in your video just a second ago saying otherwise seemed to me the most normal thing in the world!
Needless to say that what we should look into is our posture. As deadheaders we are allowed to board at any time as long as the minimum crew is on board. so it’s frequent to be in a similar situation with revenue passengers still boarding. Never once I’ve see somebody laying halfway down with open legs or sitting down so inappropriately.
That’s the point that hasn’t yet been made here. The crew member could have be seated gratuitously upright and being at her/his/their cellphone and go utterly unnoticed.
Regards and keep up the good spirit!
    Lorenzo

I find right-hand boarding rather strange, especially with the cargo pit so close. Loading/offloading gets a bit complicated with the catering truck in the way, now imagine having to load that with air stairs, busses, and passengers?
Plus I also think it is a security concern with passengers and baggage in such close proximity to each other.

As a cabin crew myself there are rules when it comes to Deadheading.
    1) Each airline is different, for example mine you can wear casual business clothes or uniform (I prefer Casual, sooo people dont look at you like helloooo i need help with my bag)
    2) most of the airlines, do pay for Deadheading just like working a flight
    3) the whole phone situation is more like a personal thing. Like me, I don’t use my phone while Deadheading PERIOD (I just thing is rude talking on the phone, on speaker, or facetime, while boarding and thats including actual revenue passengers, but thats my personal Opinion)
    3) I normally tried to board last if I am Deadheading.
    4) I don’t personally get bothered or cranky if someone ask me a simple question just like in which terminal we will arriving Buttt if your asking for drinks and snacks etc etc etc. i will nicely tell them Even if you see me in uniform doesn’t mean I am working the flight But i can let the working crew know about it.
    5) keep up the good videos 🎉😂

I am cabin crew on a major US carrier and we're allowed to use cell phone and browse if we're deadheading. It's absolutely normal. We're on duty and need to stay out of the way of the crew and the boarding passengers. If we're in uniform, it's also fine. In America, passengers are very courteous to us and sometimes engage in conversation. During boarding, we're expected to remain seated so we aren't confused with working crew. And, when we are working crew, we always tell deadheaders to just relax and enjoy their personal time. If a passenger mistakes us for working crew, we're trained to respond appropriately and professionally. Our responsibilities are defined by company policy and union contracts. We're not to work (that's the working crew's responsibility). But in any kind of unusual situation or emergency, we're trained to be of assistance to the working crew. This also applies to pilots, who, at our airline, deadhead in first class.

Hello! I'm an ex Jet Airways(India) and Qatar Airways(Qatar) crew. In Qatar, you cannot use your mobile when you are in your uniform. However, In India, because of on time performance(otp) the Indian airlines might ask the dead heading crew to take the last row seats and be seated there as they do not have enough space in the galley and the R1(Galley crew) might be extremely busy attending the captains, 12 business guests(with on ground services), closing, arming doors etcs.(I'm talking from my experience from Jet Airways) We could use our mobiles however we later got a notification to be discreet about it).
Also, the ground staff might have asked you about your filming as in 2016, because of safety reasons, filming outside the aircraft/taking pictures were prohibited. This rule was implied on everyone, passengers and crew members. For pictures, we had to take permission from the commander(PIC). This crew could sit in her uniform and use her mobile(if the company allows her to do so) however, her body language is giving extremely negative vibes and because of her actions, the company might face a bad reputation.

Josh, I love your reviews and honest appraisals of the various worldwide air carriers. Since I am recently retired, my wife and I are planning to do plenty of traveling in the post-COVID world. My question to you is - since there are several airlines that take offense to vloggers who present verifiable critiques of their product, are you wary of the food they give you. It is well documented that even in high class restaurants, that the chef or wait staff add spit or foreign matter into food that is sent back to the kitchen. I personally would not eat anything on a 2-3 hour flight from an airline that has just been openly hostile to me, or who are aware of my job.

That being said, they're not so strict now about phones, so no one (from the airline) will say anything if you use your phone on break in the galley or hanging around the terminal waiting for your flight.
We mostly deadhead not in uniform, but when we do heave to wear uniform, it's clear that we have to be on "best behaviour", but using a phone is still not a major issue if you're discreet.

I work for a North American Carrier, and we have strict rules on how to behave and present ourselves while in uniform and deadheading. However we can take advantage of the same comforts as passengers, with the exception of consuming alcohol, and we have to follow the same safety requirements as well. I prefer to deadhead in plain clothes, however, most of the time I don't have a choice. Being in uniform, I am very self conscious so I sit down, stay quiet, and put on the noise canceling headset and go to sleep. Just remember the rules may be different for each carrier and how a deadhead crewmember is the one that is responsible for their actions not, the carrier. You don't behave and follow standards then you're terminated.

Hi! I’m crew and have dead headed many times. As I’m still in uniform we are required to greet passengers and encouraged assist the crew for small tasks (out of kindness). With this, once the doors are shut and we’re in the sky, so long as we remove our tie, or scarf, we are aloud to use our devices, but require to be at the back of the plane. However, during boarding this would get you dismissed from the airline as quite simply, it doesn’t look good. But you’ve got to remember, you’re not operating crew on that leg, so you are technically not required to do any duties.

To answer your question from my perspective as a frequent, domestic & overseas traveler, about what I think about this deadheader. I think she should have definitely waited for the passengers to board first & took the least inconvenient seat that would not be disturbing paying customers, not just sitting their before everybody boards while she plays around in her phone with her feet up ready for a nap 💤 I mean WOW that is a combination of a lack of self awareness & it’s just extremely rude.
I am a barber and I own a barber shop in The U.S., Boston to be specific & if one of my barbers were just hanging out, relaxing in the barber chair or messing about on his/her phone, regardless if the barber was on the clock or not, it’s just not a good look because the customers don’t know who’s on the clock and who’s not, If customers were waiting for a haircut then I would have a major problem with that for sure.

Also we change our cloths or wear something casual over our uniform so that we don’t look like crew. N most important thing here is the attitude. Weather ur dead heading or operating, the passenger pay our salaries, so respect to the passengers is something that needs to comes from the heart. In most of the flights of AI heading from BOM/DEL to COK, I have seen a lot of deadheading crew, some of them get business class seats and some the economy seat, In the most recent two business class flights there were 2 revenue pax and 6 crew but they did not wear uniform but had an id card of Air India, the service for the them was same as that of regular passengers

@josh Cahill, I do watch a lot o your videos, My Mom worked for Gulf Air for over 2 decades, hence my passion for Aircrafts, am blessed with a Job that requires a lot of travel hence, have flown a many, many times with Asian, European and African carriers.
Just last month I flew for the first time on IndiGo and boy was that a trip (Dxb-Bom-Goa), as I walked towards my Gate, there were 4 IndiGo Cabin Crew walking in front of me, each carrying a KFC Bag, found it a bit strange at first, but later to my Surprise they all 4 were Deadhead Crew, now here is where all the flags went off...
    - 2 were seated right in front of me, 2 on the other side of the aisle, One of the On duty Crew poked fun at them for carrying KFC onboard, to that all 4 crew replied, "Yuck, We never eat the Airline food onboard", "We rather stay hungry", strangely the on duty Crew also replies the same "Yeah, me too i would never eat the crap that is served onboard"
... Wow and this conversation is right In front of us Passengers,
    - Apparently the 2 Deadhead Crew in front of me, were not even on the right seats, but decided to sit together as they wanted company, till the actual Passengers arrived, they even had the audacity, to ask them to exchange seats, which the older couple denied
    - the somehow landed up all seating on 1 side, was not sure f they managed to swap seats with other fellow passengers, and boy were they loud on the whole flight, discussing and poking fun and gossiping on other fellow crew.
    - When the Crew came to ask what you want to Drink, i asked if they had coffee, she said yes, charged me the money as it was a Budget flight where you pay for any meal or beverages onboard. the crew never asks what coffee you want, instead pulls out a 3-in-1 sachet and puts it in hot water, i told her Ma'am i want Coffee without Sugar, that was the trigger, she went from being a snob to a full blown "Karen" raising her voice saying we do not have coffee without Sugar, you have this, as i had already paid for it, i politely told her thanks and returned the coffee, she leaves her cart in the middle of the aisle and comes back 5 minutes later with Black Coffee, did i drink the coffee - Of course NOT
    - As for the Flight, it was with a Transit, so your checked in your onward Flight and given a Boarding pass, i do understand due to Custom clearing you need to collect your baggage, but when your back for your 2nd flight since you already have a boarding pass, they should at least have a special counter for baggage drop with boarding pass holders, but when asked the crew got confrontational and i had to stand in the General Queue for over an hour just to drop the baggage again!

Hey! Not from the industry but victim of vistara baggage handlings.
In short, they misplaced the luggage, took 5!days to get into Colombo, I needed to collect it from airport and appeared damaged and with some items missing. The ground service refused to comply iatas procedure in filling PIR. The police enforced the procedure, then the settlement by the airline refused to comply Montreal convention wanting to clear the damage of the luggage with 15 dollars…

They weren’t dead heading they were working crew members. I’m all for the crew taking a rest but I found this a bit strange. Only saw it once.

Question: is merging with Air India really the solution to all this airlines problem or is it just a band aid solution? This in my opinion seems like they just want to hide in another corporate entity's name. Correct me if I'm wrong but it seems like it will still be under the same management but with a different branding, so how will that do Vistara any good if right now they can't learn and correct all the complaints being thrown at the airline, staff and management right now? Just my two cents

Spitting on your food if they did, is NOT good Josh, I’m shocked if they did. The deadheading I feel was probably a plant to keep an eye on you & report back. My worst experience with feeling uncomfortable flying on an airline was with El Al. They couldn’t understand why I could afford to travel so much, asking why certain documents were issued differently to others, had me unpack my luggage twice on the ground & the same questions asked by two different sets of staff. On boarding, a man sat in the 3 seats in front of me, taking the middle seat, just staring at me for the short flight from Cairo to Tel Aviv. The man next to you looked suspicious too. You are a braver man than me Josh, I wouldn’t have given them another opportunity , you have been fair with your review of the good food served, shame about their work ethic. Safe travels Josh.

Here in USA when deadheading most of the airlines will not let you sit in business class or first class, you have to sit in economy. We are usually allowed to be in our phones but still act professional and courteous. Most of us put a jacket or something to cover our uniforms while passengers are boarding so they dont see we are crew. Unfortunately there are many cabin crew in all the airlines here that behave like that :(

  • @Francebras
    @Francebras 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Thanks for your always interesting videos. If I was only to compare the cabin lay out nand catering provided in this video to Brazilian equivalents, I would definitively be very jealous. Apart from high fares, you would quick realize that the domestic airlines are ripping-off their high-paying customers, with very little to offer to justify the premium class status. As for the VIP lounges, they are all overcrowded, basically open to any credit card holder (and family) and are basically non-existent in the domestic terminals.

  • @travelmoreworkless

While I’ll agree with your reaction to boneheaded crew, I’ve reservations on your take on the lounge issue. Despite being CV Platinum member, I’ve faced this issue on multiple occasions. India, being land of a billion+ people, and rising disposable income, credit cards with free lounge access issuance on the rise n airlines having pathetic food choices, this crowd is understandable. In fact flying on Thai airway BOM-BKK in business class, There was no lunge access in Mumbai. I had to wait out the 3 hours in terminal as The Priority Pass was not on me.

I don't get why an off-duty crew member can't just relax though. Dealing with customers is pretty exhausting to start with - and as much as I hate to admit this about our country, India has some of the most poorly behaved flyers in the world. Add to that an overworking and crude employer (based on what you've heard from their messages) - I think there's absolutely nothing wrong in a crew member trying to hold on to their sanity by just relaxing and looking at their phone - I'm guessing in a deliberate attempt to not be bothered by passengers in the couple of off-duty hours they have before their next flight.

  • @emmampey
    @emmampey ปีที่แล้ว

On my airline you can use your phone just like a pax when dead heading. We are not allowed to use them on the plane when working. When dead heading you just have to not show the company in bad light. You can eat, drink( non alcohol), watch a movie, sleep, read a book etc. However you are as back up for the working crew if something happens and also if you are certified on the aircraft. However that sitting slouched is yikes.

Rn Tata is looking at merging AI with Vistara and AI has already hired a branding consultant who also worked in rebranding American Airlines to work upon the rebranding strategy. As they want the 30% market share faster, they are merging the airlines. The Tatas seem to fully understand the problems and are trying to fix it. Campbell Wilson is very particular about returning back the AI legacy just as it was in the past. I am optimistic about the merger. Only time will tell what happens.

We sometimes have to deadhead in uniform as we may have to operate straight after we land or we need to comply with the relevant countries entry regulations.
We can use our phone and so I don’t see an issue with it. I’d always engage with customers if they were receptive to engaging.
