    I'm not even Korean but i find logical that you don't put a spoon full of rice in the soup. Like.... The rice can spread in the soup.

    Dating in Korea sounds perfect!! I can't stand it when guys do the whole waiting thing with texting and trying to get a date on your own is awkward. Dating in Korea sounds like a lot more fun and convenient.

    When I was first dating my husband he would message me constantly and one day I snapped at him about it and was like "If you just give me some space I'll be more interested in contacting you! But right now you are driving me crazy!" So he backed off and didn't send me a message for a full day so I wondered what he was up to and was like "Hey..... what are you doing?" So then he realised the cultural difference and how much that had worked on me haha.

      +Lovely FancyWorld The money is for the family and the funeral cost mostly. The victim may be a person you never knew, but someone you know has been effected by a great tragedy. It's a sign of trust and togetherness through difficult times.

    • @itspowers9107
      @itspowers9107 8 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      It's actually for the family's costs after the person is deceased. If that person is a provider for the family they could use the money. Also ceremonies and burials aren't cheap. That and they feed you so yeah. I know it's a lot (trust me I'm a poor college student) but they will understand if you give less. Just make sure to give your respect.

    Hi.
    I think the reason why Westerners misunderstand the Korean custom donating money in funeral or wedding ceremony is that they mostly focus on the main persons (dead person or just married couple), but, in Korea, we focus on the left people, the family.
    So it is perfectly reasonable to Korean people to participate in the funeral/wedding ceremony though you don't know the main person (dead person/marring couple) but know one of his/her family member.
    (For whom interested in Korean funerals, I recommend the Korean movie '축제(Festival)" (1996). It is a story about traditional Korean funeral. You may get confused how a funeral can be a festival, but if you focus on the remained family and all the fusses they make, then the funeral is not about burying a dead corpse into the ground, but is about conflicts, reconciliation and understandings between family members)
    Whether it is a happy or sad event, having an big event like funeral or wedding takes time and money. You have to prepare the settings (in many cased rent a big place so people can gather, chair setting, etc), welcome and serve the visitors, do the event, and clean it after the event.
    So the visitors donate money to help the remained family and to ease their economic hardship. That's it. Korean people think that it is a way of helping each other (so called Sang-Bu-Sang-Jo).
    Based on the same context, the funeral service companies in Korea often named like bla-bla- Sang-Jo. It may sound very weird to American people why a funeral service company's name is "Bla-bla- helping each other', if you don't know the cultural context. : )
    Those kind of funeral service companies are similar to '계(Gye)' or insurance company. You deposit small amount of money each month, and all those collected money goes to the company's account. When you or your family member die, the company will spend the collected money for the funeral. So you are donating the money for someone else who has a funeral this month, and you will receive the money from others in the future, too. it works in that way.
    Anyway, so the basic concept is helping each other. If you received the help, you have to pay it back. You might have heard such talks in Korean talk shows, 'I donated some money in his wedding but he didn't donate money or helped me in my wedding'...like that. Well.. people remember that. Many Korean families keep memo or notes to remember when and how much they received such help from whom or gave it to whom.

    OMG I broke up with a Korean guy for that SAME. EXACT. THING. Being a total bugaboo and blowing up my phone nonstop! I can't handle that, I don't even talk to my mom every day, why the hell would I sit and talk with a guy I might-sorta-like for an hour every single day?!? I had to brush him off quick before I lost my mind. We would meet on Saturday, he would call on Sunday night just to chit chat. Then he'd call AGAIN on Monday evening, ending with "okay talk to you tomorrow!" and I'm like "no you won't!" but I'd concede a little by having him call me on Wednesday. Then the process would repeat until we met again on Saturday. Ridiculous. The conversations were never simple "hey I'm just checking on ya" calls either, it was always "so how was your day" and I'm thinking "tf...... am I 10? Is he my mom?" then he'd go on for an hour about his day, his family, food, or whatever else popped in his head. My phone battery would be hot by the time I hung up, ugh. Guess dating Koreans isn't for me, I'm too introverted lol.

      gladitsnotme Bwahahaha, I've had the exact same experience. A couple of guys eve used to Kakao Talk me every day ALL DAY.Of course I got tired of it the FIRST day, so I answered to their messages very late... And when for example I din't answer for some time, like an hour or so, they would send emoticons or question marks to make me answer faster :P Fortunately not ALL Koreans are like that (my present boyfriend isn't ^^), I could never stand it... However, I noticed many Koreans are kind of possessive of people they may want to have a relationship with. Now I am just careful who I'm giving my phone number to :P

    • @gladitsnotme
      @gladitsnotme 9 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Ferraro Michela OMG YES! I didn't even remember the text message habits! I think Koreans view text msg convos as ACTUAL convos, where people reply immediately. Where I'm from, text messages aren't expected to be replied to immediately, even an hour or two later is okay; if people want an immediate conversation, they just call. I had to block incoming messages on my Kakaotalk because dudes were too annoying with that!! lol

    Hi! I love watching your videos! You are so cute and fun! And your Korean pronunciation is pretty impressive. I also had some cultural shock in America haha, so it would be fun to talk about it with you. By the way, I think 20,000 won or 40,000 won for a funeral/wedding can be considered weird, but 30,000 won is okay! I am Korean and it is/should not be forced how much you want to give although there is some expectation.

When I visited Africa I asked for a plate for myself and I got looked at real hard, like what is this specimen we have here? :') but I think you should try to eat and respect Korea's culture and then if you really cannot find an alternative. Have a good day ~ :)

    In the Philippines, we give money too, but it's never compulsory. Mainly, it's for the funeral costs and financial help for the family that was left behind. And we only go to a funeral if it's a relative or a close friend's relative or coworker/coworker's relative. If it's the boss' event, usually the team representatives go.

    My first mistake in Korea was at shopping. When I paid for my shopping's I put the money on that desk instead to put the money in cashier hands. Her face expression said it all. Here we have to give the money in hand and receive them in hand. Oh by the way, with both hands. Sorry for my English...

    ChoNunMigookSaram Thank you so much for making these videos! When I visit my family in Korea, I get a bit overwhelmed with all of the cultural differences, but watching your videos help! The one mistake I always make is hugging when I greet people....super awkward. Keep making videos! I love what you do.

  • @longestpossiblename
    @longestpossiblename 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Your intro really made me giggle today ;)
    I can totally get the whole eating thing because even though it's not cultural here now in my family we always had to wait until everyone was ready to start eating and then we'd say grace and then eat so even now I find it hard to eat when everyone isn't ready and I still get a bit bothered at times if people start eating before everyone has food. So I can imagine how some people could be quite offended since in Korea it's the culture of the country to wait for those above you to start. Food things are definitely one to watch.
    The money thing at funerals and weddings really surprised me at first when I heard of it since there's nothing like that here, you must have felt so awkward about the funeral money that time oh dear.
    You must have to try harder to remember peoples' names in Korea since you can't just call them "you"...I think this is one thing I'd struggle with lol I can be so bad with names sometimes.
    Thanks for making me smile with your video on a day I wasn't feeling well.

    Hiya Megan! I found your channel 2 days ago. I love your videos!! I find them so funny and interesting because I love Korea, The culture and the language. It is nice to see how things are for foreigners living there. I am a Cabin crew/air stewardess so I travel a lot. Out of all the countries I have been to Korea is my favourite

    Hi Megan! Are there exceptions to the rule when it comes to small children if they are hungry? Will the older folks understand and let the little ones start eating if they ask permission.

    I must move to Korea hahahaha.
    when I came to the U.S
    the word "you" sounded so... disrespectful, like... in my country we use so many ways to talk to older people "usted."
    I dislike too the fact that you must wait to message someone. like ... cool!? ha! if you want someone, you do your best to attract that person, or get in connection.
    I understand eating manners because... well, we are not in our house to eat like that.
    anyways, if I ever go there... I will pay attention to those things

    I'm not sure why people are so confused and closed-minded about giving money. In most cultures, you give gifts for big life events... weddings, birthdays, graduations, etc. Cash is a form of a gift and a very practical one.

    Girl.. thank you so much for these informations.. specifically the money giving thing .. but about the rice and the soup like commme onnn the rice will fall in the soup if you take it on the spoon.. this is so much similar to what we have in my country take the soup to your rice bowl not the opposite even if you were alone.. it's something we all in my country so used to it that i didn't think much of it until you mentioned it.. thank you for your beautiful videos. . Keep the good work

    hey megan, (if you haven't already) can you make a video on how you established yourself in korea? as in, how you got a job and made friends etc? bc i remember in a previous video (i believe it was the one saying why you moved) you made it seem like it was easy to just move to another country w/o worrying about money or anything social? anyway, thanks for the content you provide us!

    I've noticed the thing about messaging back in dramas! Like one person will text another and they will get super annoyed or worried if the other person hasn't texted back in like 5 seconds! I'm obsessed with your videos Megan, you are so funny

    The messaging people you're interested in often makes so much sense! I wish it was more like that in western society. All of those little games we have to play in our dating culture are frustrating and, frankly, so confusing. x)

    Lol about the korean guys texting you all the time... well i have the opposite problem. I started dating a korean guy like a month ago and what upsets me is that he never texts me or calls me. Well he did start texting me the day after we started dating but then he stopped. I would text him and he wouldn't even answer or if he did it would be like hours or days later. Then i thought he wasn't really interested so i just stopped texting him and decided to just forget about him. Then he started texting me again and asking me if i was tired of him. I told him what the problem was and he was just like.. i'm sorry but texting is just not my thing... so yea.. he hasn't sent me anythig in almost a week... i'm not texting that guy again. I feel like he's not interested on me but he still wants to have me. Now i wish he was a little desperate for me lol.. I don't even know what to think. I mght be wrong but who knows...

    • @heidechazares
      @heidechazares 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Jessy Aly He was interested but not everyone is a texter. I absolutely hate texting! I prefer a face to face conversation. If we can't have a face to face conversation then the last resort is speaking on the phone. To me, texting should be used just to set plans or for any little errand. I would not text anyone if I have to write out a paragraph. He told you he wasn't a texter, so don't just assume he doesn't like you. If you guys never went out any where on dates then yea he wasn't interested then. Oh well, he's not the only guy!
