You can get *Zhang Lu* _even earlier_ than that, with once again, the *Zheng Letter* being the culprit! When you return to *Xinye Castle* to meet up with *Ma Su* and *Ma Liang* so they can be on their way to the billeting, right after that, you can use your Zheng Letter copies in front of *Liu Bei* to get Ma Su clones. Now, if you talk to Liu Bei right after one usage, he will also say that piece of *Yi Ji* dialogue there. Choose yes, and you will get either *Xiahou Dun* or Zhang Lu. And, well, can that Zhang Lu smile, or what? He'd make for a _fine_ game show host!
Turns out it was a Liu Bei imposter! What's that line from Final Fantasy XV? "Get off my throne, pretender" You built up anticipation for the glitch, and boy howdy, it did not disappoint! 😆
Zhang Lu's attack animation bugging out is probably due to lookup tables being involved. When an attack is called, an animation is looked for in the table for that sprite, with sprites facing left and facing right likely having different entries in the table. Since Zhang Lu's animation lookup table has no right-facing sprite for his attack, it substitutes whatever the pointer winds up pointing to, which is apparently a buggy firebust animation with the wrong palette applied. I kinda wonder if you can get totally outside the animation tables by recruiting the right otherwise-unobtainable general, and cause some arbitrary code execution by attempting to play animations those sprites don't have?
This glitch is not present in the novel, but is attested to in the official imperial histories.
It wouldn't surprise me if someone actually disguised themselves as someone else in order to recruit someone who would normally not join them.

Maybe the attack animation just looks up a number, and the numbers for the enemy generals are not the same as those for the allied generals?
