    The Noctua coolers are beast, I recently compared 3 of them and I'll be sticking with the U14S :) not only better performance but they also seem quieter than the AIO's.

      @@Ramasamykasi I have a U14S in my home server. On the X399 Taichi which has the upper slot as far up as possible, it slightly pushed against the GPU backplane. I used the 3mm offset and now it does not interfere. It's hard to reach the PCIe slot lock but other than that it doesn't make life too hard.

    All about that surface area, the current water cooler blocks don't cover nearly enough of the cpu lid to draw away heat effectively.

      HardwareCanucks did an AiO vs air cooler video like a year ago using LGA 1151: air coolers produced better temps and were quieter.

      @@geoli6407 Except gamer nexus is heavily biased towards water cooling. From my own personal tests, air beats water most of the time. There are exceptions but not great enough to warrant the hassle and risk of an AIO gamble. IMO for me to justify switching from Noctua to the AIO, the AIO has to definitively, unequivocally beat air, not just kinda beat air...sometimes. If AIO products get to the point where they can keep my temps below 30 even under load, then ill switch, otherwise there simply isn't enough of a reason to switch.

      Asetek is the dominate manufacturer for AiOs. They've had more than enough time to make changes but they haven't. This is a comparison between options available on the market and bit air coolers when.
      Also, Hardware Canucks did this test on LGA 1151 like a year ago and air coolers still won in terms of temps and noise.

You made a great and valid point about not wanting to deal with any static when it comes to continuous productivity workloads and not having to worry about the system not cooling enough or pumps crapping out over time (can't have an oh sh*t moment when you have a big project on the table) Great job again guys, great presentation and video work. 1. Not the same brand in an Air vs Liquid comparison

      I don't know if you are right on that. I have a 1700 and 1080ti and the stock cooler made my room feel at least 10-15F warmer after a 5-8 hour gaming session vs my Deepcool Captain 240EX over roughly a longer gaming session. Of course, toward the end of the gaming session with the AIO the room started to heat up but I was done by that time. This doesn't mean that it dissipates less heat but instead dissipates it a lot slower into the room making it a lot more comfortable to be around.

    All of the AIOs that you showcased were meant for smaller single die CPUs and they had a fin-stack made for... you guessed it, smaller single die CPUs. Even though the cold plate of the block may have been big enough the whole chip, the fin stack was not. At best the fin-stack of the cold-plates on these coolers would have covered half of each die on TR; which simply doesn't cut it. That full cover cold-plate make a world of difference, as you can see with the Nactua cooler. If you want to do a real comparison compare the same Nactua coolers to an open loop using EK's TR block or if you can find one a AIO with a block made for TR - I think Enermax is making one.
    P.S. Not saying this is a bad video. The teams just weren't evenly matched to start - don't send a cement truck to haul a 18 wheeler load.

      That's only a bottleneck-effect. It's unlikely that the heatflow is restricted because of the contact surface. You can simply test it by just applying paste in the center and not covering the whole thing. I saw a review doing exactly that and the temperature difference was marginal.

    this is an apples to oranges comparison... you're using an AIO which the heat sink was never designed to cover such a huge surface area vs the heat sink on the air cooler which was specifically made for it.. all this proves to me is that the tool that was made for the job works better than something that was designed for something else and adapted to kinda work. it was an absolutely stupid move on AMD's part to even suggest using an adaptor plate because i would say the mounting points being wrong is a pretty minor problem as opposed to only covering about 3/4's of the cpu lol

    How exactly do you clean the thermal paste out of the little screws on an AIO, I build computers but, recently a costumer of mine had a small capacitor on his motherboard burn up, I didn't know this and couldn't diagnose it so I took the computer to another shop and they figured it out. They tested the CPU and put WAY too much thermal paste on the cooler. Any help would be much advised.

  • @TheOfficialDuBsTeC
    @TheOfficialDuBsTeC 6 ปีที่แล้ว +93

    Its not that Aircooling is better, especially than overclocking - its more the fact that ALL AIOs do NOT even Cover the DIEs fully while the Noctuas contacts are build for TR4.
    So in the End the AIOs WOULD be way better especially handling OC and higher TPDs but since the Noctuas can work (as of now) way more efficient.. its basically a better way going for the small Noctua NOW and waiting for better AIOs designed for the large TR4 Surface. :)

    I have the 92mm noctua on my 1950x, when on desktop my cpu temps change between 30’C to 60’C max all the time, like every 2mins and then my noctua cpu cooler gets loud. Is everything okay with my system?

    Can you use all 8 ram slots with the noctua coolers? There's 41mm clearance under the sink but the fan is sticking out even lower that this..

    I'm using U14S with Ryzen 5 1600 4ghz @1.35v/1.37v.. Under P95 and Cinebench I get 70/74C during the winter. This Noctua U14s version its not so different but I can't understand how can max only 60C on this old overclocked threadripper. Tried different thermal past, reseat, max fan with same higher result. TDP is also way different on TR compared to 65W of my R5 1600, how possible this results?

    What were the GPU temps during those tests? The AIO setups should have had lower GPU temps. The question is how much less than the Air cooler setups.

    so i have a 8350fx with a bequiet dark pro 4 , im pleased with this set up ... except of course now its time for a cpu upgrade... im going with slightly dated technology with the 1950x threadripper.. i notice the noctua nh-u14s says nothing under specifications for str4 ..... however its being used with a threadripper... so my question is will my or can my BQDP4 be used or modified to be used with my incoming threadripper?

    Any chance of a Air CPU cooler showdown for threadripper, something like Noctua U14S, Thermalright True Spirit Power, Scythe Mugen5, Bequiet DarkPro, Cryo R7, Coolermaster 212 (or whicever can run on threadripper), just a rundown to see if aircooling is viable on other brands besides noctua, specially since only noctua developed a very different bottom, the rest are just mounting adaptations.

    A lot of cpu's are not designed to run hot enough under safe conditions if they were say 100"c any fan blowing on a heatsink/RAD would be more effective due to the bigger difference in temperature meaning more performance in terms of cooling. Think of how quick your tempatures drop in your car or bike when the fan kicks in its basically the same effect

  • @UndeaKnight
    @UndeaKnight 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I dunno but it seems like some of the temp difference could be to do with CPU coverage more than it has to do with the cooler, afaik the temp difference on smaller CPUs is much smaller which would indicate similar cooling performance in the right scenario's

    Two inaccuracies I noticed:
    Firstly, NH-U12S is not Noctuas smallest / most inexpensive cooling solution for Threadripper, because that would be NH-U9 TR4 (although I don't see the value of such a small cooler on an enthusiast platform anyway and this is just me nitpicking, but still).
    Secondly, you keep talking about TRs massive die size, while actually meaning the heatspreader. The dies below it are not particularly large (not even a bit larger than their AM4 siblings, in fact), there just happen to be several of them in a multi-die configuration.
    I think you know those things, too, and I am not bringing those nitpicks (and that's what they are, but what can I say, I am a sucker for that type of thing xD) to bash you, but I have noticed similar stuff time and time again in the HWC videos made by you (like talking about "excellent tactile feedback" on mechanical keyboards that feature switches without tactile actuation points) and I really don't like that, because the channel in its entirety is so great.
    So, please, take a bit more care scripting out your videos, your more meticulous viewers would appreciate it ;D
    @topic: The results are rather unsurprising, I thought, specifically tuned AiOs will do better than standard Asetek-based solutions as well. I only know of the Liqtech TR4 by Enermax at this point, but that one should be quite strong. Anyhow, I would go with the U14S TR4 at this point in time. Noctua just knows, how it is done.

    are there any liquid aio coolers with a large rectangle pump that can completely cover the TR surface area? if there are, maybe liquid aio coolers would do a better job since the x62 couldnt cover the entire surface of TR.

  • @dantedimassimo567
    @dantedimassimo567 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    So my concern with this is that these air coolers had special designed cooper plates to cover the whole of the IHS. And the aio didn't. So wouldn't that have impacted the test results for the aio? I'm i right or wrong someone let me know cause I'm Pretty sure I'm right the aio had less heat transfer

  • @TSLMachine
    @TSLMachine 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    It's kinda unfortunate how Noctua couldn't make a special NH-D15 for TR4 socket (maybe not just yet, who knows but them?). It's not only the coldplate that's the issue with the NH-D15 but also the heatpipe clearance with the memory slots. The NH-U14S is still good tho.

  • @Razor2048
    @Razor2048 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I feel the liquid coolers just didn't have the coverage needed.
    As with the gamers nexus coverage, even if the entire copper plate is used, it does not cover 100% of the surface area of the dies, there is a still a good 30% or so of the die that is left uncovered due to their design of 4 dies on the package.

  • @trilingualkid

    The problem with this is you went with a luxury air cooler Vs a high performance cooler, the one that need to go head to head is the EKWB. This is sort of like testing a Bugatti VS a Nissan GTR vs a GTR Nismo.
    side note, I love both cooler but my case is a Corsair 350D, there is no way in hell I can get the Noctua in there without losing some options, I can get the kraken x62 in there and all I lose is a DVD/CD burner and lets be real, no one uses a CD/DVD anymore.
