Get a 3M Stripe Off Wheel Adhesive Remover Eraser Wheel to remove the crap off the underside of the bonnet. I used it to remove the old adhesive tape that held my old rear spoiler on the boot lid. Removed the old tape like it was never there and did not damage the paintwork at all.
The paint under the bonnet seems to be about one micron thick with no clear coat, the glue seems to be pulling the paint away in places. Imagine it will probably need the underside painting... Or maybe a smaller more fitting sound insulation fitting. Which could be a neat solution! :)! ~ That looks a lot like a caramel wheel, which also was slow progress when we tried it.
Good luck Sunday guys have good time what a shame the ecm still causing issues 😭😭that’s going to go a far way guys that deep clean it’s been sat for years am sure it was well needed 👍🏽👍🏽

Thanks for the tip! We did try a caramel wheel but it wasn't easy and didn't work too well - We need to experiment with some chemicals we reckon - Some sort of glue-off... Any recommendations accepted!:)
One item I found with Corvettes, Cadillacs, and other GM cars that sat a while is to go through as many of the wiring connectors as you can, check them, and clean them with contact cleaner, soft metal brush, and even a little WD-40 after cleaning to keep the water away. These cars tended to be finicky with their wiring resistance, grounds, etc.
Thanks for the tip - Amazingly the connectors on the ZR1 are super clean and generally okay, we have cleaned ALOT of them. We've noticed a distinct drop in quality with the C5 connectors compared to C4 which is surprising!
One thing I have seen recently with amazing results is ice blasting on undersides, engine etc. Personally I would pay and have that done, I would love to see the results on this Corvette!
Try the spinning upholstery brush on the underside of the bonnet then some glue remover. It's going to be messy. Have fun. The interior looks good. Way better than mine. I hope you get the ecm fixed soon. Where is it going to?

@woyzonda2a. We called them a Sierra XR4i. Instead of a 2.3 4 cylinder turbo ours had a 2.8-liter Cologne V6 engine with Bosch K-Jetronic mechanical injection could produce 150 horsepower. Nothing extraordinary, but let's not forget that those were different times and the Sierra weighed more or less like a new Fiesta today (1,200 kg), so those 150 horses allowed it to go from 0 to 100 km/h in 8 seconds and reach a top speed of over 200 km/h.
Ehm? Did you not condition the leather at all after cleaning it? First they are probably dry from time and then the cleaning product removes any moisture/lipids. It will crack if you don’t before plonking your asses in the seats.

Great progress! Your rotating brush (or slightly stiffer nylon wire wheel) will probably do a good job taking off the foam, but cover the engine first or take the hood off the car, since the foam crumbs will fly everywhere. Test a spot to make sure it doesn't hurt the fiberglass surface under the foam, but I suspect it will be OK.
That brush isn't as stiff as it looks but it might work! Should be enough to rip that dusty old foam everywhere... Once I (Chris) got board removing foam I spent most of that video cleaning as much as I could from under the engine bay so it looked as presentable as possible... @@Auto_Funk Yeah, and if your brush isn't stiff enough there are all sorts of wire wheels used for stripping paint and refinishing furniture that should work. We need all the advise we can get. To be honest it could have had a multitude of issues. Maybe there is a bad Eprom as you say! I imagine we will have to send it off to the guys in America that have the specific test equipment for it and probably the world supply of spares.
@Auto_Funk yes. All 3 spares. 🙃 (Silly anecdote: I've had similar computer issues with my 89 Ford Supercoupe. About every 4 to 5 years I've had to replace it's ECM. Knowing that there aren't many out there, I put a tiny mark on it the first time I sent it back as a core. It eventually came back to me 😅) Anyhoo, keep at it!
I doubt the problem is the ECM it is more likely the weather pack connectors or the wires going into the weather pack connectors. what happens over time the connectors will spread open and they loose contact.
Gutted, I'm 30 miles from Mallory Park and would've loved to have met you guys and seen the ZR-1 but they don't allow dogs in and I can't find any daycare for Sunday :( It looks great on video, nice job. I hope you have a great time at the show, weather forecast looks good so don't forget your suncream! With regards to the foam insulation, WD40 should get it off (it can turn Sikaflex / Tiger Seal to mush!), the tar and glue removers are 90% petrol so not worth the extra expense.
Hi guys have you thought of using a firm called ice blasters based in Northamptonshire? They have featured on saving salvage and matt Armstrong the results speak for themselves all parts of the engine and chassis look as though the car has just left the assembly line they might even be able to clean the underside of the bonnet. Keep at it 😊
Loving the videos gentlemen, have you considered that the ECU issue could be in the wiring harness plugs? They would be the most exposed bits while the car was standing. Wishing you well with the car.. Dave from Stoke UK😊
We don't think it is, they're all really clean (have been cleaned again) and the fault happened in the Red ZR-1 we tested it on as well. One thing I think we should try before sending it off is changing the 02 sensors. As the fault does seem to happen once it goes into CL. Possibly they are giving really really bad data and asking for a really rich condition and its worth a shot before we do.
Guys guys! Use citrus spray on the bonnet. It's a mess , but it will safely let glue lift! Spray it on. Let it work and just take plastic razorblade and scrap it of. And guys guys!!! If you clean the leather you need to give moisture bak. I recommend elephant by colour lock! Made my zr-1 seat soft as the day , they left bowling green
I am going to apply a cream to the leather on sunday! 100% I have some good stuff I (Chris) uses on my seats. Gliptone. In theory its safe to use on your skin as a moisturiser.
Nice work guys I wish i lived in the UK I would come and meet you guys and the car of course Warning at full power the ZR1 will scare the S***t out of you. Thats a race car
Whilst Llew was attacking the interior, I (Chris) was soaking the left two panels down with hot soapy water and having "some" success with that, as they're almost totally clean! But that took me another hour or so just to do that tiny area. Its like the spray on carpet glue has been used as well as the adhesive on the back of the foam. Really stubborn! Cheers Rog!
Llew thinks its causing a problem with the timing of the injectors... To be fair it must be that, or timing of the spark. Can't really be much else I guess!
A ZR1 is rated at 522 N/m 385 ft-lb of torque. Since you mentioned your weight in stone and you are basically doing archeology, What would the torque be in "Cubit/stone"
I'd love to help but that level of maths is WAY too complicated for my tiny brain!!! I'll have a guess... Using Google a cubit is 21.88" and 70kg in stone is so that's 1.98... Where do I go next?! Ha!
@@Auto_Funk What?! But you're British! You guys defeated the Enigma. Hell the accent alone is worth 20 IQ points over us Yanks! Don't you Limey's have some sort of national archives that reference "Ye Olde Dyno Shoppe"?
I imagine thats why it was there in the first place. To be fair I have considered that some tastefully fitted insulation would be a good solution to hide where it will take the paint off.
Think that will probably take the paint, it seems really fragile/powdery under the bonnet (no clear coat). Even just hot soapy water seems to take the paint! Probably have no option but to paint it (or leave it I guess, it is not going to rust is it! :D)
Having DTC 31 and stating that the fuel injectors are not sequenced properly makes sense. If the cam sensor can't sense or the signal can't be processed by the ECM, the ECM has no way to synchronise the injection with the intake valve opening. The injection will then only rely on the reference signal provided by the ignition module (the crankshaft position). Engine will then run poorly.
I will test an area with that! WD40 has also been suggested, so we will test a few things. It is really really stubborn! Its basically carpet/trim/headliner glue.
@@Auto_Funk I have a hobby of refurbishing business laptops, and they often come with all sorts of stickers and glue residues. I've found IPA to be the most effective in getting rid of glue residues without harming the surface underneath (be it bare or painted metal or even the black soft touch coating of a ThinkPad). Working on an area that vast would cause some serious fumes though, so I'd consider wearing a mask even outdoors. In my experience, citrus oil based glue remover works alright but typically is not as effective as IPA, but might be the cheaper (and perhaps healthier) option.
That system we believe is working, there is a separate vac pump under the right side headlight that has been replaced and all the actuators move freely. That SAMCRAC series is a great one! Guys a genius.
I mean I am not totally against the idea of it... but we would have fitted something thinner, and more shaped to the cut outs of the bonnet if we were going to do it. Guess who ever fitted it thought it was a good idea at the time, perhaps they were worried about paint bubbling up from the heat. Which I have seen on C4s.
@Auto_Funk I think even a bucket of dry ice tipped on to it would and left for 5 mins would turn it to dust also... could be a cheaper option for now. I know it works with that thick sound deadening paint they use on floor pans... that turns to cinder toffee, breaks right off.
I would say neither... its just some random eggshell foam packing you'd buy in a roll. Similar to buying a roll of bubble wrap and sticking it under there.
Found a nice video that's worth aa watch. " Was The World's Fastest Street Car for Almost 20 Years " history of the Reeves Callaway and the Callaway Top Gun and Callaway Sledgehammer Projects. Sledgehammer not a normal C4 900hp
Basically he went through all the solder pin solder joints, tested the transistors and tested for continuity everywhere and that was all fine. He thinks there must be a dodgy chip and basically there isn't much he can do about that as they're unavailable. (Well in the UK anyway)
Yes I’ve had the same struggles with my TVR ECUs such as the heater control ECU. It is possible to find some of the discontinued chips from China and the US but it takes some hunting around. Fingers crossed for you on this one.
Either a failing chip, or perhaps it has bad data in it from bad 02 sensors as some people have suggested! Which is worth a shout for sure before it goes away!
C4s onwards are a nearly all metric apparently. Which surprised us too. Although I (Chris) did bring along my imperial spanners and sockets, they we're hardly used.
It's a commonly used name for them over here. They're a useful place and their professional tool kits are really high quality, lifetime warranty!. So its possibly somewhat unfair!
@@Auto_Funk I'm English and in my 50s and have never heard that before, I had presumed the picture was used because of the sierra and hadn't noticed the name wasn't right...
I (Chris) thought it was too harsh as well, but Llew assumed me it was fine... Didn't seem to do any damage though fingers crossed as basically no pressure was applied. I agree if any pressure was applied it would pull the pile up.
@@Auto_Funk My experience is different, hence the comment. Ruined a good set of floormats and had to re-dye the leather. (Both from a 993 Porsche, so quality materials). After that i refused anything power tool related in the interiors. 😅
A proper steam cleaner and a ozone generator will kill the remaining mould stuck in all the nooks and crannies. You should be able to rent the equipment. Actually ozone generators are quite cheap to buy from China. Just got to be careful using ozone on organic materials (leather and rubber).
The paint is really thin and has no clear coat. Its quite powdery to the point even wiping firmly with hot soapy water does pull off the paint. So I don't think we have much chance of removing the foam without the paint being damaged.

That is not a bad shout, that might break it down, I will test an area on that.
Hi guys have you thought of using a firm called ice blasters based in Northamptonshire? They have featured on saving salvage and matt Armstrong the results speak for themselves all parts of the engine and chassis look as though the car has just left the assembly line they might even be able to clean the underside of the bonnet. Keep at it 😊
That is a shout actually! Ice blasting might be able to get it off.
@Auto_Funk you make good points, watching eagerly..
Have a great weekend at Malory Park, wish I could make it over for a chat.
Stay Sane..👍🏼😉
If you buy the trico wipers from rockauto, they work great, 202 or 204 model, just check the pin diameter as there are 2 sizes.
Nice episode.
Thankyou :)!
All gm vehicles rely heavily on grounds. Check all grounds and clean them
Thanks for the tip - We've cleaned most of them, the worst ones were on the back of the block, total nightmare. We should have employed a 5 year old!
Nice work guys I wish i lived in the UK I would come and meet you guys and the car of course Warning at full power the ZR1 will scare the S***t out of you. Thats a race car
Imagine the car will ripppp hard!
I would have used an old tooth brush to clean the crevices of the seats, using tooth paste🇬🇧🇬🇧
That's a good idea! Luckily there weren't that bad, it must have been quite clean when it was parked up!
Wash , cut , and Blow scrape! Kind Regs, Rog.
Cheers Rog!
At idle you won't even be close to maxing out the duty cycle on the injectors unless they are significantly undersized for the application.
Llew thinks its causing a problem with the timing of the injectors... To be fair it must be that, or timing of the spark. Can't really be much else I guess!
Get on of those whippy wheels they use for getting badge residue off for the bonnet foam
We tried a caramel wheel, didn't really touch it surprisingly! Might once all the foam is off and we're just left with the glue.
@@Auto_Funk well I’m sure you will get there..by the way those seats are probably the nicest seats I’ve ever seen
I would recommended putting back some insulation on the bonnet you'll most likely cook paint without it
I imagine thats why it was there in the first place. To be fair I have considered that some tastefully fitted insulation would be a good solution to hide where it will take the paint off.
i dont care if you work on this thing forever the journey is somewhat fun and interesting
We care :D! Sadly we kind of know getting the car to run and drive is actually just the start of it!
That mouldspray is a mild bleach 😬
Indeed - Don't worry, we were careful with it! :)
Spray the remnants of hood foam with Acetone.. use eye protectors. It will eat away the foam and glue.
Think that will probably take the paint, it seems really fragile/powdery under the bonnet (no clear coat). Even just hot soapy water seems to take the paint! Probably have no option but to paint it (or leave it I guess, it is not going to rust is it! :D)
Have you tried messaging Samcrac regarding a replacement ECU?
David!! We have actually and he replied - No leads!! What a legend to actually get back to us eh!
Soak the foam liner with isopropyl alcohol. It softens MOST glues
Halfords is like ORiellys in the US or NAPA in Canada.
Exactly the same type of place!
4:30 am here is the vid..
I might attend depending on the pints I have tonight. we shall see
Haha! 😛
You guys should get in touch with SAMCRAC,he had I think the same issue with his ZR1,part of it had to do with the full horsepower key.
That system we believe is working, there is a separate vac pump under the right side headlight that has been replaced and all the actuators move freely. That SAMCRAC series is a great one! Guys a genius.
If it wont run properly clean it. At when it runs it will feel nicer
Definitely agree - It feels very different inside now!
I can’t believe that someone put that insulation under the hood, that’s insane
I mean I am not totally against the idea of it... but we would have fitted something thinner, and more shaped to the cut outs of the bonnet if we were going to do it. Guess who ever fitted it thought it was a good idea at the time, perhaps they were worried about paint bubbling up from the heat. Which I have seen on C4s.
That engine makes such a beautiful noise. I’d hate to try to muffle it.
i would have thought it would have been cheaper to buy a 2nd hand one from the states than send it to be repaired
Really hard to get hold of them. They're basically unobtainable.
Ice blasting would remove that sponge debris in a crack
Thanks for the tip - We 100% plan to get the car ice blasted so hopefully they will be able to sort out that mess as well ! :D
@Auto_Funk I think even a bucket of dry ice tipped on to it would and left for 5 mins would turn it to dust also... could be a cheaper option for now. I know it works with that thick sound deadening paint they use on floor pans... that turns to cinder toffee, breaks right off.
Is the hood insulation a factory fit or after market?
I would say neither... its just some random eggshell foam packing you'd buy in a roll. Similar to buying a roll of bubble wrap and sticking it under there.
@@Auto_Funk That's worse than I thought! Nice fire hazard. Cheers for the reply. Really enjoyable videos. 👍
"Hal-frauds" lol...The AutoZone Of England.
Similar for sure! One of them places we love to hate but wow would me miss it if it went!
Found a nice video that's worth aa watch. " Was The World's Fastest Street Car for Almost 20 Years " history of the Reeves Callaway and the Callaway Top Gun and Callaway Sledgehammer Projects. Sledgehammer not a normal C4 900hp
Sounds cool - can you send us a link?
@@Auto_Funk YT search the title " Was The World's Fastest Street Car for Almost 20 Years " i'll try to link in reply.

Cheers!🍻
I watched that only yesterday. I was very interesting.
Your neighbor is as religious with his lawn car as you all are with the work on the Corvette.
Like clockwork! :D
How come the ECU didn’t go back to the Saab guy for another go?
Basically he went through all the solder pin solder joints, tested the transistors and tested for continuity everywhere and that was all fine. He thinks there must be a dodgy chip and basically there isn't much he can do about that as they're unavailable. (Well in the UK anyway)
Yes I’ve had the same struggles with my TVR ECUs such as the heater control ECU. It is possible to find some of the discontinued chips from China and the US but it takes some hunting around.
Fingers crossed for you on this one.
I wonder what the UK ecm repairer failed to fix
Either a failing chip, or perhaps it has bad data in it from bad 02 sensors as some people have suggested! Which is worth a shout for sure before it goes away!
Not sure about your exchange rate for the wiper blades. lol. I’m thinking they would be $14 if £11.
Quite correct :D!
Just use a caramelwheel for the underside of the bonnet.
We did try it! Didn't really touch it surprisingly!
Guys, you don't think that all that foam on the bonnet was pushing down on the ECM when closed do you ? just a thought.
That was my first thought , but if you noticed it sounded just the same with the bonnet up , so don't think that's the problem 👍
Don't think so... anything is possible though!
Soak the foam in WD40 and then scrape it again. I guarentee it will come off.
Will try this!
You both own hairdryers lol.
Unsurprisingly 😅😅
Halfrauds 😆🤣
You do know it has 16 injectors right but the plenum has to come off
We know! We've replaced the injectors if you check the previous vids! Thanks for watching!
It's coming along, a bit slow maybe, have you tried swearing at the ECM, it's never worked for me but blowing off a bit of steam never hurts. 😁
We have... we haven't tried swearing in German though... Might be worth a shot, since that's where the car was delivered.
Surprised they are metric nuts on the seats
C4s onwards are a nearly all metric apparently. Which surprised us too. Although I (Chris) did bring along my imperial spanners and sockets, they we're hardly used.
Guys hopefully u see this but GET SOME EMERGENCY hood latch cables installed for 10 bucks
Did you mean to include a picture of 'HALFRAUDS'...
British humour and possibly correct
It's a commonly used name for them over here. They're a useful place and their professional tool kits are really high quality, lifetime warranty!. So its possibly somewhat unfair!
@@Auto_Funk I'm English and in my 50s and have never heard that before, I had presumed the picture was used because of the sierra and hadn't noticed the name wasn't right...
Huh!
:'D :'D ! HuH?
OMG. £11 for the pair.
You know your local motor factors (not euro car parts) do infills for like 85 pence a piece 😅😅
Oh well... that's why I guess halfords gets its "u" in the name. :D... Done the job anyway I guess. Will know next time to shop around!
That drill brush is way to harsh. it'll even ruin carpet.
Just grean soap and horsehair brush for the leather.
You got the £ to $ conversion wrong.. £11 quid is about $14
Hey, are you gonna raffle off the car? Can I buy an item from the store and get a ticket so I could probably get a chance to win the car.
We're thinking about it! It would be quite cool - We probably don't have enough subs for the numbers to work though!
£11 $7? More like $14. Sure I'm not the only one to notice.
Yeah! A couple of comments on that. Glad neither of us work at currency exchange, we wouldn't work there for long :D!
@@Auto_FunkI was considering using you for € for my upcoming holiday until I learned of your exchange rates 😂
In what world is GBP 11,00 equal to USD 7,00? ;))
Quite right, incorrect way around!
Throw your rusty screws in a tub of toilet duck they’ll clean right up.
Also acetone will soften the adhesive on the foam
Good tip
@@davidcassidy2731 Depends if hurting the paint is an issue. I'd use 3M Adhesive remover.
@@332ARA I use carpro eraser never harmed the paint not sure what the corvette bonnet is made of if it’s composite it might not be a good idea
The paint is really thin and has no clear coat. Its quite powdery to the point even wiping firmly with hot soapy water does pull off the paint. So I don't think we have much chance of removing the foam without the paint being damaged.
You know when a TH-cam channel starts quoting HUBNUT triangle of DOOM !!!! They are getting a little too comfortable in slippers, Pipe & smoking jacket 😂😂, Llew , Chris your far too young for such a saying lol 😂. I do that a lot to guys ? Start a job , give up and move to something more interesting 😁, but great job on interior 👌🏻
It is quite an extreme triangle of doom to be fair!
@@Auto_Funk Ok will give you that , it’s BIG and I don’t think seen bigger on Ian Hubnut, but it’s a little rude to be comparing sizes at 10am on Saturday morning boys 😂😂, have a great week Llew , Chris , hope Mallory goes with a bang 😳, not literally BANG 👌🏻
Lads I would definitely recommend you using some gloves and masks for all of this work, that looks pretty nasty in there, I would say there are some dangerous airborne spores circulating, would hate to see you both end up looking extras from the walking dead. You wont realise it but you will touch your eyes, mouth and nose subconsciously!!
Probably correct there! The under bonnet foam was especially dusty. At least we're outside. Would be horrible doing that inside to be fair!
