I am from Dominica and has been a fan of the channel for few months now though I am ashamed of the experience you've had I really like the fact that you kept your experience raw and unfiltered. The country has a lot to offer and do with thousands of friendly and welcoming people. I hope your stay goes better than what its been sofar.......... looking forward to more content.

The run down buildings he showcased are in that condition because of hurricane Maria that wiped out thousands of buildings and a lot of lives were lost. The guy clearly had a motive. The individual that took the coke from him is well known by the community, he was born with a mental illnesses, he can’t make sound decisions and never made it pass middle school. He can’t even say a sentence to save himself. The video creator should be sympathetic and don’t judge a book by its cover. As for the guy trying to sell him weed and asked for a drink, I did not notice any weapons, and threatening mannerisms or duress, he made his choice! We need to look at things from different perspectives before we make foolish videos and comments.

Years ago I've spent few months on this beautiful island. Walking the Waitukubuli trail, sleeping in the jungle and getting food from farmers felt so good.The best adventure of my life. I hope to see you again, beautiful Dominica.

As a Dominican 🇩🇲 I believe this is a very terrrible depiction of us and the title especially gives a very terrible light. I'm watching through and reading comments about how people are so scared to come here because of this. We are a safe island, and a very friendly people. We are the nature isle and filled with beauty, and splendor. You can walk anywhere and be safe cause no one would ever dare to hurt anyone.
I'm thinking of other countries like Trinidad, St. Lucia, and Haiti who have cities that are prone to violence and Dominica isn't like that. We've even been deemed ONE of the safest islands in the region. Every corner you're going to meet someone who's willing to help you, speak with you, and guide you.
At the end of the day, it's great to see more people come here and recognize this island as an island. Everyone will have their own experiences and this was yours. However, I do not believe that it was really given a chance here. Explore the neighbouring communities, do a mini island tour even. Even after a major hurricane we are trying to get back as a society.
I have a lot to say but I feel this is the most respectful way to express things. Locals are not liking this at all.

It just depends on the neighborhood you're in and all that. Where I live is very wealthy and safe but if you walked in the wrong neighborhood you'd get scared too. He just went to a bad area.

Hey Bro, I’m part Dominican/British so I know the place very well. Not all locals are like that but unfortunately they don’t have much else and are in truth some are too lazy to do anything. However, the majority are a great people and very welcoming. Some good places to check out are: Calibishi (small fishing village with some great beaches nearby), Toucarie (beach village), Roseau (capital), emerald pools/sulfur pools - and would very much recommend going up in the mountains to Bells, where you can feel free to stay on land I have there (has lots of fruit and a river running through to swim). Don’t know if this is a late post and if you are still there but yeah

I am half Dominican and I would like to say that calling Portsmouth the "worst city in the Caribbean" is so naïve its almost laughable. There are FAR FAR FAR worst cities in the Caribbean and its not even close .Its the equivalent of saying that Nashville is the worst city in America? Obviously that would be an outrageous statement. Dominica is definitely not the best island and definitely has its flaws, but it is not the worst island by ANY metric.
1) GDP:
It's definitely one of the "poorer" islands, but even that's debatable because there is barely any needs to spend money in the first place (Most food is grown domestically and running water is basically free). But even so its NOT last in GDP actually higher than JAMAICA if adjusted for Purchasing power. And that's despite being only 3% of their population.
2)Safety:
it is NOT the most dangerous island in the Caribbean not even close! Barbados, Jamaica, Trinidad, Haiti, The Dominica republic all have at LEAST 10 cities WAY more dangerous than Portsmouth.
3) Culture and beauty:
Obviously "beauty" is in the eyes of the beholder but the geological and biodiversity of that island is one of the best in the Caribbean. Notice that the streets were definitely in need of repair but also notice how CLEAN the streets were. And that's not because the government but the PEOPLE who maintain the place by themselves. For you to truly appreciate what the country has to offer you would need to ask a few locals and talk to them. You came as a tourist, walked the streets and expect to see the best of the island?
4) The downsides:
It is true that the government is corrupt (like all governments?) but obviously the island is not being used to its full potential. There are many reasons for this but some of it is because of many islanders leaving to more capitalist countries. But they all come back fairly often, either to retire or on vacation.
As the older man said: Lack of opportunity for the youth and unemployment is possibly the greatest issue that the island faces, along with some drug trafficking issues.
So please, unless you've traveled a bit more on the islands, don't call that city the worst. Trust me it's so wrong that I'm willing to bet my life that ANYBODY who's been to a few islands would never tell you that Portsmouth is the worst city in the Caribbean.

I’ve been a long time subscriber and was so happy to hear you visited Dominica since I’m Dominican American. You were literally within walking distance of 2 5 star hotels, the beautiful Indian river, purple turtle beach and the cabrits national park but you decided to go the hood and turn your camera on. I understand that TH-cam views are important but that title is completely wild. You spoke to a few high and drunk ppl and are now painting the entire Country as dangerous. Btw I’ve also met the man who asked you for coke , he’s mentally delayed and asks everyone for coke a cola. I’ve traveled throughout Africa , the Caribbean and Europe and Dominica far from the most dangerous.

Its just that unfortunately people that are mentally challenged, are left on the streets, instead of being taken care of. All locals know them though if you ask around. My experience in Dominica was the complete opposite. Dominica is a beautiful island with the friendliest, most polite people. You went for a walk in the most run down dilapidated town, met a guy clearly intoxicated and chose to label Dominica from that experience.

This video is very misleading because in the beginning his goal was to head to the beach but yet he decided to record buildings that were destroyed by HURRICANE MARIA, ....He basically recorded a ravin calling it a river in which when he began recording he actually had to cross the great INDIAN RIVER Bridge and never recorded the INDIAN RIVER. By the way a movie scene from PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN WAS FILMED ON THE INDIAN RIVER.
Last but not least, Remember, In the beginning his goal was to head to the beach but yet there's no footage of the BEAUTIFUL PURPLE TURTLE BEACH.
This guy is clearly documenting the NEGATIVE in order to get LIKES & VIEWS.

Have you been to other cities around the world? Dominica's is def not the worst. As a traveller, iv been to many different cojntries around the world, and Dominica is far from the worst. Iv travelled to here bout 2/3 times and iv had amazing experiences. The main city, the people, the food, is pretty great and inviting. And from what iv recently heard from the few friemds iv made over there, Dominica is ranked as one of best tourist destinations in the Caribbean.

I am from this town , you met a mentally ill person and a guy with autism . You spoke to the gentleman on the playground, you heard what he said this island been hit with a cat five hurricane in 2015 then another in 2017 plus the biggest part of this towns ( islands ) GDP leave after the hurricane, many people lost their jobs and homes due to the the hurricanes , I been reading all the comments,you deleted mine from before ,you have an agenda for . For views and likes , your caption for this video spikes the algorithm to give you the most views . I used to be a fan of yours I see what you’re doing .
Same! I was a subscriber for a while too but this was terrible. The man who asked for coke is developmentally delayed and not a threat. I was at purple turtle one night asking for coke and I bought him a soda . He’s not a threat at all. But here this guy goes acting like he was robbed and his life was in danger.
I’m Dominican and I can tell you the guy that took your coke is a vagrant. It’s a really safe country but you can’t go walking around talking to everybody like they’re your friend. There are bad people all over the world but there are good also. I’m sorry you had such a bad experience. We are all embarrassed by this.
Every outsiders watching this video and judging our country based on a short clip of his experience in Portsmouth... Why didn't he visit the waterfalls, beaches, volcanic sights, rainforest, etc... Why didn't he go to other communities and have the full experience of the country?

We do have a lot to offer in terms of the sites and our people are way nicer than those you encountered in the video. I would recommend linking up with a certified tour guide who can help you see the beauty of the place and have authentic experiences that don’t trigger your PTSD.
There’s the Indian River, Cold Soufriere, Cabrits National Park, Bois Neuff Falls, Red Rocks, The Chocolate Factory all in the north and north east in addition to lots of small restaurants that offer delicious local meals.

Visit Champagne in the south or Scots Head where the Atlantic and Caribbean Sea meet… or hire a CERTIFIED tour guide and hike the Waitukubuli trail. Go to Emerald Pool or the Hot Springs. It’s worth it. I hope you visit again. 🇩🇲

This is Dominica. It simply won't happen. The place is only "optically" sketchy. There hasn't been a notable tourist robbing or killing incident in years. The place is small. People would know.
Dominica was greatly affected by hurricane Maria about seven years ago, hence the reason so many damaged buildings littered the town.

Sorry you had such a scary reception in Portsmouth! I live near here and people are definitely looking for money from the white tourists! I know that young fellow from the beginning segment, he comes off as scary but he’s actually alright, he works hard almost every day street-cleaning for the government. He has that very odd, sarcastic way of speaking but he’s no danger. People here will always ask for whatever you have you just have to stay strong, so good for you not buying his cousin a drink. They will try to scam you and get you to give them if they can, but once they get to know you that stops. There are some very nice people and places in Portsmouth but you can get the kind of experience you had quite easily, too. The Portsmouth locals need to work on their tourist reception skills, sorry for that. It’s really not dangerous, you would never be held at gun point.

If you look at his other video titles this may be his way of getting views; however, this is unfair to Dominica. Can't get views at our expense. While there are negatives to the country, like there are in every country, he is highlighting the worst and has shown nothing good. Why didn't he spend money for a guided tour of the Indian River? Or show a view of a mountain? There is also the Cabrits Fort in that area.

I have been a teacher for almost 10 years and My neighbors are the chief of police, the manger of the banks and the Credit Union, top busoness owners, government ministers and more. How about i show you a side of Portsmouth you did not show everyone?
If he was shorter or weaker it looks like he would've been attacked or coerced in that environment. Looks like Dominica needs to fix the lawlessness or establish no-go zones for tourists! You are looking at the world through the eyes of PTSD from being robbed in Colombia. My country is not represented by the 2 individuals you meet while casually walking through the backstreets of an impoverished side of our second city. 2 things you did wrong there ;
1:You went walking around without a local guide, if you want to travel the rough side of any country then have a guide.
2: The second one was just you not getting over your PTSD before jumping back into this lifestyle. Now you're viewing everything through biased eyes, you walk around and seem on edge. The guy whom took the coke well honestly that's on you being scared, I get that, you won't take the chance, but tbh, that guy is a mentally handicapped individual, if you were adamant in telling him to go away he would of left you alone, instead you reached out with the coke as we clearly saw in the video and he took it as a signal that you were being friendly.

As a Dominican. 1. You SHOULDN’T need a guide. Y’all are so used to taking people out to shield them from and misconstrue the reality of just existing in Dominica. We do the same thing with investors and expats. This is healthy solo travel and this is the experience. 2. Also they fleeced him on that watermelon, they fleeced him for that coke, tried to fleece him on a hat. And he had his drink stolen by a man who clearly shouldn’t be out on the street in that state. We know why. Bad review deserved. 3. “Casually walking through the backstreets” babe that is 90% of Portsmouth. Picard is marginally better. 4. Bad reviews shouldn’t sink companies or countries they should encourage us to do better. But as a Dominican you and I both know a video like this will simply be sensationalized amongst the public and nothing more that WhatsApp chain mail. There is no binder of bad reviews being continuously reviewed for tourism product development. If you want better for the country, it starts with honesty.

I am from Dominica, but it's never smart to walk around in a foreign country alone. Spend the extra money to get a tour guide. Overall, our crime rate is low, but these things happen everywhere when you make yourself a mark.

It was intimidating watching the video. He is quite tall and decently built. It looks like someone weaker could be intimidated and pressured for money... when visiting foreign lands it's uncertain for tourists what criminal elements lay ahead. If someone was to reject the man's request for money and drinks they don't know if a gang will show up and threaten to kill him!
