What's behind Botswana's president's threat to send elephants to Germany? | DW News

- Berlin or Bavaria might not be the first place you think of when it comes to elephants, but they could soon be making their way to Germany if Botswana's president has his way.
Mokgweetsi Masisi has threatened to send 20,000 elephants to Germany, after Berlin warned that it might limit the import of hunting trophies.
Botswana is home to one of the world's largest elephant populations - and conservation efforts have caused their numbers to swell to more than 130,000 in recent years.
The government has issued a limited number of hunting permits to keep their populations in check and to raise money for local towns. President Masisi told a German newspaper that a ban on hunting trophies could impoverish some Botswanans.

Germany is dishonorable if it does not accept 20,000 elephants to Germany
Please please please bring them to Germany. Let them all march straight into the Bundestag.

Bet those Germans won't know what to do when the elephants cross the Alps!

We will think of something, are we not the great thinkers and inventors? 😂😅 🇩🇪 let them try us. Those elephants could arrive here hooting in deutsch instead of "Karibu hakuna matata!"
Wait, is he serious ? We Germans aren't able to coexist with a single bear or a bunch of wolves 😂😂😂
So if he insists, he and the elephants must consider the following:
1 Don't enter or cross our streets, especially our beloved Autobahn
2 Since elephants love water, we have lots of lakes, but they can't use public beaches here
3 Don't enter our yards without invitation
4 Don't poo everywhere you like to
5 And most importantly: Don't eat our trees
Germans love animals, especially when they are on leashes or well controlled behind fences.
😂😂😂
And with climate change, it would be hot enough for them to live there more comfortably temperature-wise :D.
i guess this why Elephants prefer Africa over Germany :)

"It's easy to sit in Berlin and have an opinion on Botswana, but we pay the price."
Mokgweetsi Masisi said that in order to express dissatisfaction with the German Green Party (Bündnis 90/Die Grünen), the country plans to donate 20,000 wild elephants to Germany and requires these animals to be free-ranging like in Africa.
People think it's easy to control that many elephants because they don't have them at their disposal

Encouraging people going on about elephants being endangered to pay attention to actual news report. Conservation efforts have been successful and national parks are literally overcrowded. I live near Hwange in Zimbabwe and overpopulation is causing major ecological damage. Coupled with effects of climate change, it's not uncommon to come across elephant graveyards due to starvation and dehydration.
The Caliph Harun Al-Raschid sent Charlemagne an elephant as a gift in the early 9th century, signifying vastly improved Abbasid-Carolingian relations. Perhaps the current governments of Germany and Botswana could learn something from this medieval episode.
Hannibal's spirit lives on
Botswana has done great at conservation, but it's a small country. Grow up Green Party.
I am German, and imagine what would happen if a Botswan minister would tell Germany how many pigs to eat because they have a different point of view about cattle
They can hunt all they want. The law is about importing the trophies into germany, something that is well in there right to regulate.
That's not the point is it? If he told his inhabitants to not bring pig meat into Botswana, that would be comparable.
You didn't understand a thing, did you?
There are Germans who want to hunt elephants. Botswana has excess elephants and wants to make money out of then but the German government wants to make difficult 🙄
@@NyanyiC Belgium already banned hunting trophies and the EU is working out a similar ban. I don't seem to understand why we only talk about the plan of germany to ban these trophies, and again they can have as many tourist hunt them down as they want. Botswana == The best!
Masisi and his besties (makula, maburu, ma bdp) are mad that they aren’t going to make no money. He limits hunting permits for his besties only. Now he’s crying because other countries don’t want to buy them, he should find another market.
Wena o bua lerete hela.
130,000 is just a tiny facttion of how many elephants were in Botswana before humans started butchering them. Small game hunting to put food on your table is a lot different than trophy hunters.. murdering something just for bragging rights is evil.
I don't think we should tell another country how to manage their resources.
source: trust me bro.
'The elephants do get eaten. This helps villagers to forgive them for crop damage.
@@normanwells2755depends on if you count wildlife as a resource or not. In my opinion those elephants have nothing to do with hunan drawn borders and therefore no singe country has a right to decide on if they can exterminate a species or not.
Unfortunately we live in a world where if humans do not see a cash value in something and it benefits them they don't care... To put it simply if they outlawed trophy hunting the local population wouldn't make money from the Hunter's... The government wouldn't get money from hunters and there wouldn't be any conservation. The people would sell the ivory and the government would have a wholesale slaughter to make way for more farmland to feed its people and possibly sell the ivory for its benefit as well. Remember that people are at the heart of every system and they manage the planet like a golf course... Hunting PAYS for conservation and without legal law abiding hunters there wouldn't be any elephants in many places. China wants that ivory for some crazy voodoo medicine, that's where our problem is.
Uhm... yes please?

I don't understand . Is the quarrel because Germany does not want to hunt elephants in Botswana and the large increase in the number of elephants causes a problem for the population in Botswana?
Germany is considering banning the importation of trophies from big game hunting in the name of preserving endangered animal species. Botswana has too many elephants and issues hunting permits to keep numbers down and make money, including to German hunters. Botswana's president says that if other countries, such as Germany, ban importation of hunting trophies, it will deprive countries like Botswana of an important source of income. Botswana's president then said, we can only assume jokingly, that he would send 20,000 love elephants to Germany and they can take care of them. This was not a serious statement, but rather a dig at Germany trying to tell Botswana how to manage its resources (suggesting elephants shouldn't be killed).
The seriousness with which this DW report is covering this story is silly. No one is sending any elephants.
@@jtwil2191 Appreciate the quick version ty.
Other countries like South Africa and Tanzania allow elephant hunting. Botswana which currently has the largest elephant population has not allowed hunting since 2014, and wants to change this. The not so funny background is that poaching is on the rise since legal selling of ivory for countries which have accumulated stocks was allowed again a couple of years ago. And while the elephant population in Botswana is doing well, the global assessment is again Endangered since 2021, after having been downgraded to Vulnerable for 17 years. Most African countries can't protect their remaining elephants if the market for ivory keeps growing.
@@jtwil2191Botswana has too many PEOPLE. Maaaybe they wouldn't be starving if they'd ship some people to other countries instead. Or you know, birth control. Cause most of them don't bother with that.

130,000 is a lot of animals requiring a humungous amount of food. Botswana is not particular blessed with vegetation, most of the country is desert. There are bound to be human animal conflicts. Lets not forget that the Europeans themselves drove the abundant Eurasian wolf almost to the edge of extinction - before they became rich on the plunder of colonization, able to send their excess population to the New World, Australia, South Africa etc. and are now able to preach morality to the rest of the world.
You have a different view and that's all right. If you think "they" are not right, ok, but they mean well. Tell them their mistake, as what Botswana did. But please lets all be one world.

Ivory has been controlled in international trade for a long time now.
Controlled hunting has also been used to aid in conservation efforts with success in some cases. When locals have an economic benefit for tolerating large destructive animals they have an incentive and resources to manage the wildlife more effectively such as hiring more anti poaching patrols. When humans are in conflict with local wildlife that only is an economic drain on them such as in property destruction, the interests of the humans tend to have priority.
As Botswana citizen I don't like this why would we send elephants to Germany for what 😢

Old habits die hard, European countries never miss a chance to lecture other countries on their internal affairs, why Germany tool this decision unilaterally why they did not discuss the issue with Botswana government before making any remark.

Meat's back on the menu boys!
The thought of elephant hunting is extremely revolting to most of us, but it's far more distressing for the elephants. The Botswana elephant population has yet to return to the pre-colonization levels, while human encroachment has expanded = reason why their government is feeling pressure to reduce elephant population. Allowing hunting is a very cost-effective solution, but it seems like there must be more humane methods, e.g., export to neighboring countries with appropriate habitat.
Pray beg which country in the region can afford the associated desertification that elephant overpopulation brings?
The highest concentration of elephants worldwide is in Southern Africa, Botswana and neighbouring countries like Zimbabwe, Namibia and South Africa. So your suggestion is irrelevant in this instance.
@@zachariahkwada9988 All the countries you mention generate considerable revenue via tourism to areas occupied by elephants. Importing more elephants to those countries further increase tourist revenue, making your response irrelevant.
@@jlvandat69 The parks where populations are kept in-check are the ones that attract tourists. The ones that have an overpopulation of elephants lose their trees and eventually all other species that attract tourists. The elephants end up starving when there isn't enough trees left. Botswana banned elephant hunting in 2014 and is now the country with the most elephants in the world, with 130,000 elephants. For comparison: South Africa is more than twice the size of Botswana, but only has 18,000 elephants and allows hunting.
It would be great if DW did news instead of sensationalism for a change. Restricting the import of hunting trophies in Germany doesn't stop Botswana from culling the elephant population if they deem it necessary. And the quote is based on a BILD interview, Germany's yellow press, so it is a good guess that BILD provoked that statement by misrepresenting the German policy debate and also quoted out of context.
