      Unfortunately TH-cam requires you to watch it. You can't watch another video or close your browser or turn off your computer or get up and go for a walk.
      Not my fault! I don't make the rules!

      Was the ending intentional then? It just seemed like a loop but maybe I missed something. (and for the record I did just go to another vid XD)

    • @werekill
      @werekill 7 ปีที่แล้ว +75

      It's a modular synthesizer set up that he has been working on, and it isn't a loop. Basically each panel with knobs either outputs a sound or messes with the sound in some way, with each colored cable connecting the panels. If panel A generates a sound, a cable can connect it to B to run it through B's filter. Then from B to any other filter, another sound generator, or tons and tons of other options.
      Here's the cool part. His set up is self playing. He set some parameters, fiddled some knobs, and set up a panel to randomize various electrical currents. Plus a ton of other little panel settings. He set up the initial sound, but from there, the rhythms and notes are self generating. It's an instrument that plays itself. Very rad stuff!

    It's interesting that you say you have to fight the lich. Both times I played the adventure, we returned his phylactery to him in order to free him from his alliance to the dragonlord.
    We had 99 problems, but a lich wasn't one of them.

    • @jonathonbartos5420
      @jonathonbartos5420 6 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      And that is how it is supposed to go. That fight is meant to be a curbstomp battle if the PCs fight him. It usually isn't, because the Ghostlord has a stunningly poor design from an optimization standpoint (blighter...*shudder*), and the PCs are handed the *perfect weapon to kill him in the first area of the adventure (the Staff of Life)!* Probably my least favorite aspect of the adventure, actually. In 5e, however... the Ghostlord is a much more intimidating foe, and if a group of level 8 or 9 PCs try to take him on, they will get owned so freaking fast!

  • @chrispetherick
    @chrispetherick 7 ปีที่แล้ว +79

    I just started this for my players after Matt recommended it a few months ago. It's a great campaign. I hooked my players by making Azarr Kul be dragonborn and the long, lost hatchmate of the dragonborn paladin in their party. The dragonborn paladin had a vision of the opening scene --- the burning hills and massive army mobilizing -- and recognized the warlord as his brother. I ended up placing the whole thing in Faerun, south of the Shaar and east of the Wyrmbones Mountains. Some of the names of cities changed, like Brindol became Rethmar but otherwise it's pretty much the same. A few people have already done a ton of work updating some of the key monsters to 5e. You can find those online with a simple search.

The older the adventure, say 1E modules, are less likely to be familiar to newer players. I also change names to fit the adventure into a world other than the world where the adventure is set.

    I adore this adventure so much! It was obviously a response to the battle scenes from the LotR films, and it works brilliantly. And there is so much depth that can be added to it. It works particularly well in Eberron, where Tiamat isn't a goddess, she is a demon Overlord, and functions as the equivalent of an Elder Evil. The stakes are *so* much higher this way! For anyone adapting it to 5e, be cautious with the dragons. They pack a *lot* of punch early in this adventure, particularly Ozzyrandion (the green dragon at the bridge). He can easily wipe a party of 5th-level characters with his breath weapon if you are not careful. I'd actually recommend re-fluffling a white dragon, whose breath weapon is just slightly less lethal.

    Glad came across this, building home brew world and guess who has a feudal hobgoblin nation. RHOD sounds ideal to run for this! And my players will be none the wiser! How good.

    @ 6:00 its crazy to me that this was always so prevalent in the world even back in 2018 and yet here we are 3 years later and people are defending this in my country. It' strange times for all and darker times for others. Stay safe and keep gaming!

      LOT of editing! Cut out all the asides that weren't relevant. I think it resulted in a pretty watchable video! And it wasn't hard to do really.

    Might have to give this adventure a look - although I'd reskin the Ghostlord to be an actual ghost lord, as that fits my next campaign setting more, and allows me to weave in an important NPC's as a corrupted Ghost hellbent on serving some unknown purpose untl he is freed!
    Loving the content as always

    The way you summed up 'converting' is exactly how I have always approached it. I can't believe that people worte massive documents converting adventures from one edition to another. Just run it as if it was this edition ;)

    I had never heard of the Strawbs but as soon as you 'sang' ;-) the song I thought, YES. Quick google search, listen to the song, think 'sure sounds like YES'. Then see that Wakeman was in the band. Great song.

    Watching this in December 2022 and Matt’s reference to Russia’s expansionist war in Ukraine from 2014 was both salient and prescient. Slava Ukraini.

    Wow! I just started running RHoD yesterday! I'm running in Greyhawk, so I replaced the Red Hand with the Scarlet Brotherhood, who are marching to solidify their total control over the Holds of the Sea Princes. I had been building them up as the major enemy, and my players have allied themselves with a rebel faction who i said had been spying on the Brotherhood from Vraath Keep (before it was taken by Koth). The best part of the first session, they show up at what they believe to be a rebel base and knock down that old shack out front immediately, alerting everyone inside. The manticore inside flies up onto the wall and asks if they work for the Brotherhood, and they reply without hesitation, "No! We're here to kill them!" and all hell breaks loose. Can't wait for session 2.

    So, I joined a group that was doing the second half of the first act for HotDQ, and personally, it is some of the most fun I've had in a game I've played. I can see the whole 'Oh, fight that you are by no means ready for' thing as a bummer (our 2nd level Barbarian was brought to 1 point away from Instant Death, with Shield of Faith, Mage Armor, and Bless on him no less). It is one of the few pre-set campaigns I have actually enjoyed playing in.
