After putting the C70 through its paces for the last three years I've consolidated all my learnings into a course! Linked here: www.ericwalkervideo.com/c70
I've been using my C70 like this allll the time since Feb 2021 on my own one man band documentary style journey! I also created vertical markers for 9x16 (Marker 1 size 608/1080, Marker 2 size 100/100) because so much stuff is vertical focused nowadays and I don't always have the ability to hit display (labeled 5) and flip the camera/footage 90 degrees for vertical videos - I'll crop in post. Also super glad I set Button 4 to record because being right handed and holding the camera with a top handle and hitting record with the left hand is a bit of twisting I don't need in my life.
Thanks for all the c70 info, it's all been really helpful! Just a little tip for using S&F / Audio, if your second card is full the C70 won't record audio to the first card, it just won't record any audio at all.
YES!! I love using the aspect markers. I’ve also been on an aspect ratio kick lately, although I’m mostly 2.76. 🤣🤣 And I also turn off the tally light. As you mentioned, when it’s on, people are hyper aware of the camera’s presence. Turning it off subtly relaxes folks, even if they do know a camera’s there. Great video. Thanks for posting! 🙌🏾
Curious…what SD cards are required for this? I have a 250/s cards and they can’t keep up recording xf long gop, it buffers out, and won’t even allow RAW. Any recos??
Thanks for the video, am still debating if I should get this camera. I have the R5 now and rented the C70 twice for commercial work and loved it, but so spoiled with the R5 autofocus.
I’m looking forward to seeing the doc footage and your experience. I’d like to see how you manually focus using the c70. Seems like everyone has a 7 inch monitor but you don’t. If you were ever thinking of a quick little video. Excellent video as always.
Lacie rugged drives. But I only use those for backups these days, way too slow, I use SSDs for all my editing. I have my favorite linked in the description.
Hey I was looking for a camera with pre-record! Does it support it in 120p slow-motion too? Couldn't find it in the manual specifically so probably okay, but just wanted to double check! Thanks!
@@SoundItOutFilms like a step by step algorithm to filming a scene. It would be interesting to see what you're doing while you're doing it. I film a certain way but am always interested in whether other people have a more common sense approach to filming.
The C70 is a genuinely amazing camera for docs I think. I shot some of a Vice short I directed last year on it, and intend to shoot another hybrid doc/fiction short this year. For me it has about 90% of the flexibility of a larger camera like a C300 (in terms of audio channels, lots of customisation to buttons) but it's a lot easier to carry around for days on end.
@@MylesBelland Yeah XF-AVC 10bit 422. Anything for a broadcaster or digital platform like that they are very unlikely to want raw files, just a codec they can use straight away.
@@MylesBelland MP4 is good for a lot of purposes and edits fast on an M1 based Mac. XF-AVC is a bit more professional in terms of metadata and audio, Eric from Sound it Out actually made a good comparison video so I'd recommend that. I'm shooting raw for an upcoming personal project so I'm going to see how that goes!
Awesome stuff! My boss Brad Watanabe knows you, I sent him some of your videos to him and he’s like, I know that dude! Anyways, one note is that if doing the slow fast mode with WAV, the audio just saves to the other card. I was shooting like that on one project, filled up card one and then when it jumped to card 2 it stopped recording audio cause card 1 was filled. If I had just stopped a minute or two earlier on card one and then switched, I could have gotten the last dozen or so clips at the end with audio files too (and I really wish I did!) mahalo for all the great content!!!
Hey Eric, how are you attaching your lav mics for this documentary? I've been working on a piece where I have to conceal the microphones and I've been running into trouble with clothing noise. You have any experience with that?
Hey Eric, hope you are doing great covid got me and I am prepping myself for when I recover… quick one for you, Is it possible to have a shortcut button assigned so the camera automatically switches to slow and fast 120? That could be a huge plus since there are moments were fast switching could make a huuuge impact for fast paced environments, cheers
@@michaelkellykelly 😃 thanks! I grabbed my C70 and started playing with it and found the way the thing I was missing was that for this to work the camera has to be in HEVC it does not work on xfavc

Wow! That 5th tip is a game changer!
super helpful! thank you!
Great video! Especially tip number 5 was really helpful :)

Maybe you know this, but you can enable the on-screen record button as well. This was a game changer for me for the same reason!

My C70 Guru.... Thank you for this video and best wishes from Germany
Pre-recording sounds clutch for these types of projects, good spot
Man I love your channel… always so much good information
Always great to hear these tips. Most also useful for my R5C as well. Thanks
yea the pre-record and tally lights are nice features I use quite a bit. keep up the good work! The c70 just keeps getting better :)

2:1 is my favourite aspect ratio. I find it a good balance of height and width.
Good stuff man. I’m also working on a doc with a c70 so your videos have been very helpful. Keep it up
Great tips. What codec are you planning on using?
HEVC. Can’t resist those tiny file sizes when shooting such a massive project and backing up everything to multiple drives for safety.
Love these tips. I'm going to start using pre-record all the time now.
Can you pre record in 100fps 4K?

Hi, which microphone are you using for documentary shots?
A good #5 is just the concept of setting up a custom menu with quick access to the things you need/use most.
Good tips, cheers! Any benefit from choosing aspect ratio in camera as opposed to doing this in post?
For framing!

Not at the same time with the current firmware
You should do a workflow video showing how you use the c70 for documentary work
What aspects specifically are you thinking of?

Double sided “under covers” making a sandwich with them and leaving the paper on the outside one as a safety in case the first loses its stick.

There is! I have button 11 under the lens set for this. The footage gets darker, so if I'm in a hurry, I just go down a stop of ND to compensate.

yes, you would not want to shoot a whole documentary in raw lol, maybe some nighttime stuff or a gig or sth but not long unscripted convos haha
Love it
