It's been over a year since I made this video (in one day, thanks to a huge wave of adrenaline and motivation, very strange for me) and I visited it today to look at all the lovely comments! As an artist, it's extremely rare to actually be proud of your work, especially your old stuff (trust me, some of the stuff I made even last month makes me want to throw up), but this animatic still makes me smile after watching it. Don't get me wrong, there are quite a few things off about it and I have frequently asked myself if I want to remake it but I can't bring myself to do so as I have a feeling it will never be as good as it already is. I've been very confused about my art lately. I set a few goals in the last two years that by this time I will have done many things - made more animatics, learnt how to do full pieces with stunning landscapes, learnt how to animate properly, started commissions, become a major artist in a fandom - but none of these things have happened yet, and I know it's stupid but there's a small part of me that doubts they ever will. It's stuff like this - that perhaps isn't as mediocre as my other work - that keep me going, while also reminding me that there's still more to be done. To other young artists out there, don't hate yourself for not having reached goals you set! Things like that take time and I assure you that there *are* areas you have gotten better at. Always look towards improvement, but at the same time take pride in what you have already accomplished.
Aha...it's been almost, what? 4 years now? This message is kinda cheesy but I still feel the same as I did when I wrote it. In only 6 months I'll be graduating high school and heading off to uni, and above everything I've ever done, I think this is the one work that I come back to consistently to look back on fondly. I still vividly remember being 13, coming back from a trip to the city in the backseat of my dad's car, listening to my playlist of downloaded songs, one of which was this one. I could picture every frame so clearly. Now, I'm 17 and I'm so grateful for myself back then! Thank you to everyone who continues to watch this and I'm so glad this video still brings you all joy! It's so nice to see something actually dedicated to the books. They are so underrated. I love the messages about fate, destiny, and the little plot threads that all got wrapped up in the end. The twelfth book had me gasping, as finally all these little bits and pieces, random insignificant facts, all came together in a way I never anticipated. Finding this 6 years after it was made and it's still one of the only things dedicated to the httyd books, which is criminal. This animatic was incredible, especially Termagent and the Deadly Shadow. (also i love the lil doodle at the end theyre such scrunkly guys)
Hey, thanks for making this. Httyd is absolutely one of my favorite series, but it’s so hard to find fan work for it. That said, so well you capture the themes and feelings of the books, the nostalgia, how all these events tie themselves together, how despite how incredibly different the contexts are, history repeats itself. Maybe I’m nostalgic or something, but the httyd books have a part of my heart, and while the movies are fine the books are what I really love. This video captures the feeling of the books. Even though it was 2 years ago, I saw this video today, and now I'm crying. I LOVED this video, I love the feeling of comfort brings me, even being a little sad. I love how this series brings me happiness and sadness at the same time lol
I hear people say that this series is for kids... Personally, I think this series is meant to be for at least pre-teens. The books’ stories became more mature over time, and it was a mistake once that I read this series when I was a kid. I didn’t understand a thing, and I was shocked on how the story turned up in the eighth+ books! Haha I remember the naive old me...
This is so beautifull! Especially the scar symbolism and the last scene with Hicup as an old man and Termagent with baby Fishlegs got me teary-eyed. I love the movies and series (I have made lots of videos by now), but the books have an even deeper place in my heart. I discovered the books after the first movie. For the first three I thought they would be predictable, but somewhere along the way they captured me and I could not wait for the next novel. Every time I thought I had figured out Cressida Cowell's way of thinking, she managed another surprising twist. Especially the moment I realized the small, seemingly unsignificant moments in past books were the King's Lost Things. THAT is great, planned writing without foreshadowing, which reminded me a lot of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, where the objects from previous books are suddenly reveiled to be Horcruxes. Everytime I thought "It cannot get worse" it got worse for the Heroes. The sad, but admirable realistic truth of most of the books is, that Hiccup is not suddenly the big hero, like in the movies, where I have to admid, he tends to appear overpowered in RTTE. "How to Ride A Dragon's Storm" 's first scene made me brutally aware of how mature the books are, when I realized that the boy was not Hiccup, but the slave boy Bear Cub dreaming about his freedom. The Epilogs are always my favourite part, where simple words can explain the depth of life.

I thought I might stop reading after the first book but Cressida Cowell's writing is so captivating and addictive that I had to keep reading. I was super surprised but also thrilled when the books gradually became a lot darker, and the twists and foreshadowing are also wonderful. The characters are also lovable and surprisingly *real*. Another thing I love about the books is how it encourages the idea of forgiveness, to keep giving people a chance. Take Snotlout, for example. No matter how times he betrays his cousin, Hiccup forgives him again and again, and look what happened with their relationship in the end!
When I ead that that Snotlout died I was shocked. (I always don't want to read spoilers, but I always end up doing it ... :( )But when I came to the part in the book I still cried. Shortly before, when they started swordfighting I still thought "can't you talk together when you are in a safe distance.", but then I was so caught up in Snotlout's arguments, that I completely forgot about the guards. Valhalarama's sudden appearance broke my heart and the end of the book even more, when Hiccup blindly steers the ship in the storm, not realizing that everything is lost ... Snotlout has long been one of my favourite characters in RTTE, maybe I was unconcously reminded of the books, but in comparision to Hiccup, I like Snotlout more in RTTE. He has depth and hidden layers behind the bully facade.
I read the HTTYD books when I was already well out of my pre-teens. Now, even at the age of 20, I still manage to learn new things about life and human nature whenever I read them :)
I watched this in public and had to try so hard not to cry... this brought back so many memories from when I was first reading this series, I love the themes of it so much and this was perfect, thank you thank you
AH MA ZING! I love your art style, and I don't see many animations regarding the HTTYD books. I'm so glad some people have made some. As I feel that, though very different, the story of the books and movies are both very good and well-told. And equally as sad... someone's chopping onions :,)
OhMyGoshOhMyGoshOhMyGosh I was screaming like crazy when I reconized Wodensfang and Hiccup I, and I noticed that you drew Furious with 4 eyes, also I'm REALLY happy that you put in the Deadly Shadow and Termagent and Fishlegs, and the last part which had a lot of flashing frames of Hiccup III and Toothless was very detailed and contained all the books. This is one of my fav animations I've ever seen I think. It was just so good. And I LOOOVE the httyd books so much, they're JUST SO UNDERRATED

Ty so much for making this I love the books and the movies but when I watched them after reading the books it just felt so disloyal to the ENTIRE story of the book and basically everything and every person in my class has no idea they were books first I love the movies but because of how drastically different from the books they were no one seems to know the books exist and there is very little fan content it's sad to me as a fan that there is practically no book fandom but yapping aside amazing animatic

There’s something so sad and moving about the lifespan difference between dragons and humans… and the fact that the humans in these relationships besides Hiccup III have consistently tragic deaths. The dragons get left behind, hurting, and the way they choose to deal with grief is so complex. Eventually it all comes down to love leftover.

Ew...Tooth...A hyperactive puppy in dragon skin is the King of all....FURIOUS IS KING AND A HERO IS FOREVER!!! He's still the most magnificent dragon I've read in any book and Dean Debliose should be ashamed for claiming his version is somehow more than "A silly little dragon that talks!" Same goes to Astrid for that "Now that's a King!" Comment.
@@bluesteno64 Precisly. There are a couple goofy silly dragons like the Hogfly but Cressida wrote allot of really serious, deep and intense dragons too! I'll never understand why so many people equate the 'talking dragon' as something kiddie. What DreamWorks did would be like 'what-if' Peter Jackson muted Smaug thinking him not-talking would make the story 'more realistic';Except with HTTYD the case is much much worse since not only did they botch Cressida's ideas they wound up making Rescue Riders as well! I strongly recommend subscribing to Cressida's channel. She truly needs it!
@@bluesteno64 If you were confused by my last comment by me brining up 'Rescue Riders' I was referring to the HTTYD toddler spin-off in which two human children were raised by dragons and yes; those dragons are cute,silly and most of all...THEY TALK. I probably wouldn't had even been offended by the show if it was wholly unrelated but it is. Toothless in the very 1st book tells you "A dragon ain't some cute cuddly pet like a bunny or a kitten" and Smaug in the Hobbit movies (Like the Green Death and Furious) is a very clear example of why that is so. By them making Rescue Riders DW is telling people 'talking dragons' are only for kids and the Wings of Fire Netflix show may had actually for that reason. I'm sad how underrated Cressida Cowell and her kind of dragon are.

I just re-read the books for the first time since I was a little kid and came online to see if there was any content for it and I was not dissapointed! This is incredible, your art style is so unique but also captures the youthful scratchiness of the book illustrations. You choose the perfect moments for each part of the song, each one perfectly capturing the parts you're referencing.

I remember starting to read these books when I was in 3rd grade. Now I’m about to go off to college and they hold I very special place in my heart. I started reading them around that time too and I consider them such an important part of my childhood and artistic journey (I'm actually in uni right now too!). It's been a goal to remake this (or simply redraw some frames) at some point just for sentimental reasons but that's a good idea! I would love to do more dragon-related work but I would have to reread the books again when I can because I've kinda forgotten a good chunk of the details lol.

This is 3 years old but I want to say thank you, or “ᑭIᔕᕼOO” in dragonese, the httyd books were and still are my childhood. They are what got me into reading and got me my best friend I have ever had, I read the books as soon as they came out and I have read them 4 times over some. I think about remaking it every time I rewatch this! I would love to one day, but at the moment I'm almost a senior in high school so I'm swamped with work and other projects. When I get free time, we'll see! And thank you so much

yup, the books certainly grow up with their audience, i was shocked when i read (well, listened. i listen to the audiobooks on yt) the last few books.
I started in third grade but the last books came out in middle school for me so it grew and matured with me, and I grew up with Hiccup.
The last five books definitely got more mature

the story 'more realistic';Except with HTTYD the case is much much worse since not only did they botch Cressida's ideas they wound up making Rescue Riders as well!

of why that is so. By them making Rescue
Riders DW is telling people 'talking dragons'
are only for kids and the Wings of Fire Netflix show may had actually for that reason. I'm sad how underrated Cressida
Cowell and her kind of dragon are.

I just re-read the books for the first time since I was a little kid and came online to see if there was any content for it and I was not dissapointed! This is incredible, your art style is so unique but also captures the youthful scratchiness of the book illustrations. You choose the perfect moments for each part of the song, each one perfectly capturing the parts you're referencing.

Words… words cannot even begin to describe how I feel about this. It’s beautiful, sad, glorious, and incredible. You captured the books so well with this and it’s astonishing. I remember starting to read these books when I was in 3rd grade. Now I’m about to go off to college and they hold I very special place in my heart. Please keep creating amazing work like this in the future, dragon related or not.
Also, a lot of people are asking for a remake… why not do a different amv with different topics from the books? Therefore you won’t try to one-up this original and you still get to re-showcase the feels of the books.

I started reading them around that time too and I consider them such an important part of my childhood and artistic journey (I'm actually in uni right now too!). It's been a goal to remake this (or simply redraw some frames) at some point just for sentimental reasons but that's a good idea! I would love to do more dragon-related work but I would have to reread the books again when I can because I've kinda forgotten a good chunk of the details lol.

This is 3 years old but I want to say thank you, or “ᑭIᔕᕼOO” in dragonese, the httyd books were and still are my childhood. They are what got me into reading and got me my best friend I have ever had, I read the books as soon as they came out and I have read them 4 times over some. This really works in the sense of the books and I thank you for this because I wish to try and make one as well, a httyd books animation as well. This is 3 years old this video but yeah thanks

The films make me gag now. They are amazingly animated, but link in no way to the books. Disgraceful in the eyes of a book fanatic (me). Same thing with Harry Potter. It makes me angry how the films took over ;v;
