Premature infant swallowing now assessed at JGH

Les nouveau-nés ont une seule tâche importante : boire leur lait et prendre du poids. Mais, que se passe-t-il s’ils naissent prématurément avant de savoir comment avaler correctement? Leur développement pourrait être compromis, ce qui causerait des problèmes de santé. C’est la raison pour laquelle une évaluation peu invasive est effectuée afin de permettre à un médecin d’examiner comment fonctionne la gorge du nourrisson. Désormais, cette évaluation spécialisée est effectuée à l’Unité de soins intensifs néonatals à l’HGJ plutôt que dans une autre installation, comme c’était le cas auparavant.
Newborns have just one big job: drinking their milk and getting stronger. But what happens if they’re born prematurely and don’t acquire the knack of swallowing properly? Their ability to thrive could be compromised and health problems could result. That’s why a minimally invasive assessment is used, allowing a physician to examine the way the infant’s throat is working. Previously, babies had to be sent elsewhere for this specialized evaluation, but now it’s being performed in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at the JGH.
