    Pleased to discover this series last night. I refuse to debate and compare. I' ve enjoyed many different Holmes re-creators. Cushing offers a strong alternative to Brett. We were quite pleased with this version. The audio and video are excellent for a 50 year old source. Looking forward to watching every episode.

      @@marcolinoviolinistaYes it's silly to waste time comparing the difference between the actors who have brought the character to life. Rather like comparing the sunrise from one day to the next and trying to decide which is the best.

    This is an EXCELLENT rendition. Part of that being, of course, the instant and obvious attraction between Dr. Watson and the charming Miss Marsden. Cushing does Holmes very well too.

    Edward Hardwicke and David Burke were both fantastic alongside Jeremy Brett, Nigel Bruce was good comic relief with Basil Rathbone, and Martin Freeman was nothing short of brilliant with Cumberbatch's modern take on the stories, but for my money, Nigel Stock (the Watson in these Cushing shows) might just be the best Watson. He's a good combination of intelligent, capable, and funny, while also still being properly in awe of Holmes' powers. His performance is really great.

    • @CaminoAir
      @CaminoAir 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Personally, I think that attitudes had changed enough that a colder and purely intellectual Holmes was more acceptable by the time Brett played him. Brett is the most accurate to the Conan Doyle Holmes. When Rathbone played Holmes, a more traditional hero was expected. One who could handle action well and who was more capable of warmth and homour. Bruce's Watson was turned into the comic relief, because movies at that time were expected to offer the entire entertainment package. I think that Cushing's natural kindness does show through a little in his performance, but he is such a talented and professional actor that it's not a problem, just an inevitability. In other words, Cushing is temperamentally unsuited to play the part, but also has the talent to still play it.

Peter was a lovely man with a great sense of humour (he regularly appeared on the Morecambe & Wise Show in the late 60s and early 70s), but he was not at all a good choice to play Sherlock Holmes.
