    That wide window sitting area is known as a “window seat” regardless of the width. It is quite common in older mansions in Wisconsin where I’m from, but I’ve also seen them in great houses in England. You will love sitting there reading your favorite books and sipping coffee! I love how you both included your girls in the labor of love in the garden. You give such encouragement to each of them and I’m sure they will cherish these memories forever.

      What a beautiful idea!!! I suggested frosted glass above eight feet or so ...instead of bringing the brick all the way to the ceiling ...stop at eight or nine feet or so and then glass it in above that ...but a huge circle or oval of stained glass would be GORGEOUS ....maybe with a MOUNTAIN/ ALPS THEME!!! ///that could be seen from the inside as well as the outside of the bathroom giving it a less closed-in feeling!!!

    An Italian architect here, to avoid the drum effect use the double sheet of plasterboard, the bathroom has no windows so you have to choose whether to cover the plasterboard with waterproof mortar such as Mapelastic or use sheets of Aquapanel instead of plasterboard (obviously I mention very available materials Here in Italy)

    Strawberries are perennial! Don't take them out! I've been growing the same plants for years and eating their strawberries without doing anything more than adding some fertilizer... The plants tend to crawl and expand even farther than where they were originally planted.

    • @mrsmop1000

    Strawberries are called strawberries because they winter over covered in straw. They are perennials and grow and spread year after year. You don’t have to replant them every year. Place straw between the rows and around the plant! You will have them for years to come

    • @johnfranks9271
      @johnfranks9271 14 วันที่ผ่านมา +20

      The primary use of the straw was to lift the strawberries up out of the soil to keep them clean as they were growing . Strawberries were called strawberries long ago in England where because of the warmer climate straw was not required as a top dressing to over winter the plants.

    I think the reason they made the window and door headers angled at the top ends is so in case the building ever catches fire and the wood burns it will fall out without taking the wall down. If the ends were square then think what would happen if the middle Was burned out and the two ends fell down to the floor. In Michigan in 1985, I remodeled a building that was built by Ford and Edison 113 years earlier and the 2“ x 12“ oak floor Joice’s were angle cut, and then laid in to the brick walls that way, and that’s what the old bricklayers told me. So maybe it applies on your house too.

    The Old English word for strawberry is streawberige, and in that language 'strew' and 'straw' were both used to mean 'to spread or scatter'. So, the name likely meant a berry that spreads, which perfectly describes its growth habit. Strawberries spread by horizontal stems called stolons

    Talking about culture differences, in Italy (but I'm sure also in the States) you'll find different professionals who work in different ways. Something I CAN tell you about drywall (cartongesso) is that an Italian professional here in the province of Parma once taught me that it should never touch the floor but should be raised a little (you can use a little piece of drywall which you will remove once screwed in) to avoid humidity or even water spills. That area will be covered by the skirting boards anyway.
    Hope this too helps. Ciao!

    A full-size gardening fork would have made a much faster job of digging over that garden. Teach Chloe to knock the soil off the clumps of weed against the fork prongs before tossing the weeds. Strawberries like to be well fed. If you heat your used eggshells for 10 mins at about 150 degrees C, then crush them well and sprinkle around your strawberries, they will discourage the snails and help the worms. You can soak the weeds in water until they rot to make a weed-tea to use as fertilizer. Use the previous year's strawberry runners as your new plants.

  • @rodduncan1183
    @rodduncan1183 14 วันที่ผ่านมา +6

    To add to all the other comments about strawberries which are all correct.
    the straw also gets the fruit away from the soil cutting down on fungal spores splashing onto the fruit when it rains, also it acts as insulation from the sun which does cook the strawberry's roots & help prevent moisture loss .

    Best to put acidic soil to plant the strawberries as they love it and mulch around the plants. Happy gardening

    I would be tempted to leave the low door way. It gives the house more character. You won’t be using it a lot and you’ll be surprised how natural it becomes to duck. A lot of old homes in Great Britain have low doorways and you just duck without thinking.. no matter, it will be beautiful

    I’m impressed by your daughter’s ability to stay on task and her planting skills. She’s obviously watched her mother carefully and been taught well. Maybe time to buy your daughters their own gardening forks and spades? Maybe Gardening Company out there would like to do that. A little spade for little hands would be invaluable. I’m a small woman and use er, small tools all the time! You can get some quite good ones. 😊😊😊
    By the way, don’t worry about the noise of men working, I could listen to it ALL day if it was on my house. If I was your neighbour you would be getting daily batches of muffins. Goodness, do Italians eat muffins? 😂❤
    And imperfections make it perfect❤

    You have beautiful wooden beamed ceilings and lintels. You're right the barn has become a home, and the deck outside your bedroom does have a gorgeous view. Look forward to seeing the completed home construction.
