Namibia Sandwich Harbour

  • Most important is: To be there and to see it with your own eyes - where the dunes meet the ocean. The coloured sand. The magnetic sand. The greens of sandwich harbour ...
If you want to do this on your own - which I would not recommend - you need to consider:
    - A permit is needed for the tour
    - I doubt you will get clearance from your car rental for this tour
(If not you are on your own if you get stuck and very likely your car is wasted by the sea)
    - You'll have to be aware of the tides

Nice vid. We will be going to Walvis Bay soon and we will be renting a 4x4 car Toyota Hilux. We are 3 male adults. May I know do we need to get a permit to enter towards Sandwich Harbour? Saw the photo with a hanging sign by the road "Namib Naukluft Park Sandwich Harbour Permit Required. We are only experience drivers on the road. We know the risk, so perhaps will stop short at the junction where it become treacherous. Or you reckon we will not see much?

Thank you, i am happy to share. You need a permit but am not sure if it is possible to get a private one. Every professional tour guide you will come across will stop and ask you if you have one.
But be warned, check with your rental if they allow you to drive there, some cars have gps trackers nowadays. If it happens that you get stuck with no insurance.... and be sure to check the tide situation.
Besides that: it is a real beautiful place, make sure to enjoy it!

    Hi ,
did you get to Sandwich Harbor by your own car or with a guide ?
I plan to buy a permit to drive through the dunes in the SH area, but I'm not going to drive along the sea line...
so I'm wondering if the route won't be too difficult to do it alone....
    Regards
    Marek

Hi Marek, I took the tour with Turnstone tours. If you can get the permit you are legally ok to drive with your own car. If you plan to have a rental I doubt that your rental company allowes you to drive there. But even if all is ok, i would not recommend it. Dune driving is not as easy as it looks. If you have a heavy bushcamper - forget it. If you have a car with mud tyres - forget it. If you manage to get stuck it will be a long struggle to get free again. The sand is treacherous.
      Permit ?
      Rental ?
      Not a heavy car?
      Tyres ?
      Tyres aired down ?
      Experience ?
Than you can try. Otherwise i'll recommend a Tour Operator.
I managed to get stuck in sand on pelican point with the landcruiser bushcamper
~3 ton. Took me a few hours to get rolling again...

      Hi
indeed my LC will be quite heavy, considering the fuel and water is almost 350 kg or even above,
instead of a trip to SH we will go to Namib Rand (this was not in the plan).
Anyway, I'm not worried about the change of plans 😁
thank you sincerely for your advice👌

How long did you stay there after arriving? That is, the duration between arriving and returning. Thanks.

Our Guide - Rudy - told us: You have 30 minutes. To climb the dune, take pictures and then we have to hurry to drive back.

@@bluesbrother928 Thanks for your reply. That sounds a little tme for what I plan to do when there , taking some music videos and such..
Does that time increase for full day tours or the full day tour just increases number of destinations and retains little time at the sandwich harbor?

    • @bluesbrother928
      @bluesbrother928  ปีที่แล้ว

@@frankmaoro4287 you can only be there during low tide. So the time to spend depends of the general tide situation and the time slot you have at low tide. Its a restricted area. I dont think you can spent the night. But try turnstone tours...

@@bluesbrother928 Thanks for your insight amd recommendation.
I was not planning for a night but just thought of sth like an hour even if it on the sand dunes amd not near the concern.
I will incorporate what you have told me in my plans. Thanks once again.

Hello, I'm part of the production team of a UK TV show and we'd really like to possibly feature part of this video in one of our episodes. Is there anyway I can contact you to give you more information? Many thanks, Paula
