Collocations are an essential part of mastering English, and it's highly likely they make communication more natural. I wholeheartedly agree with the idea that learning them is crucial for fluency, though I can imagine some might vehemently disagree about their importance compared to grammar rules. Even if we respectfully disagree, we can still forge relationships with others through shared learning experiences. Collocations are inextricably linked to sounding fluent, and their elegance can render speechless those who hear them used effectively. Neglecting them could scupper plans for advanced language skills. While some critiques of collocations can feel like a scathing attack, I think many are blissfully unaware of how impactful they are. Videos like this can truly rekindle passion for learning and extol the virtues of collocations as a vital tool in any language learner’s journey!

Truly, truly, thank you very much for your videos. I prepared a month before for the Proficiency Examen because of lack of time, got 206 in Speaking, but in Listening and Reading, I just couldn't handle the structure of the exercises. I had practiced them, but was surprised I did not do so well.😢

I "wholeheartedly agree" with all of your follower comments that "extol the virtues" of your channel, since your lessons are "inextricably linked" with high-quality teachings, which always render me spechless. All of us should "forge relationships" in order to make your channel bigger and bigger, which, by the way, is "highly likely" to happen due to its great contents.
I'll launch a "scarthing atack" to those who dare not praise your efforts, I'd preffer to be "blissfully unaware" of them, actually.
Please Ben, don't "scupper my plan" of moving forward in my learning process and keep up with your outstanding work that "rekindle my passion" for English.
(Ben, excuse me for all the mistakes I made in this comment. The only thing I was looking for was to practice these collocations, which has been quite a challenge!!!

Let me mention, these expressions mostly exist in other languages: I speak Hungarian so it is easy to understand these collocations. F.e. "scupper" in Hungarian in a mirror translation is: to sink a ship by hitting a hole into the side, so it will sink sooner or later. I think collocation is frequently used in newspapers for the sake of better understanding and to spare a lot of work for journalists. But the use of collocations can be applied in high literature when the writer's opinion is somehow sarcastic about the state of the world or people. Just think about Bertold Brecht.

Thanks for the video, teacher. I'd like to ask, how often do native speakers use the word "scupper"? It seems to me that words like "spoil" or "wreck" would be also fine and I hear them quite frequently. Thanks in advance

On its own, we hardly ever use "scupper". But as a collocation with "plans" it's quite common.

Is it possible to use the verb 'scupper' with 'chance'?

    • @tothepointenglishwithben.

Yes, it is another collocation with "scupper". A little less common than with "plans", I would say.

You can tell that the teacher is an Englishman because in the US, we use “scuttled” instead of “scuppered”. We love the Brits!!

Hi teacher! I've a question. Blissfully unaware is a synonyn of "oblivious to"? Thank you!

    • @cyruschang1904
      @cyruschang1904 2 ปีที่แล้ว

-to be oblivious to/of something means to be unaware of or not to be concerned about what is happening around oneself.
-to be unaware of something cannot be used to mean "not to be concerned about something"
-We use to be blissfully unaware of to mean not to be aware of something unpleasant/upsetting only. It is correct to say "he is unaware of the good/bad news", but we would only say "he is blissfully unaware of the bad news", never "he is blissfully unaware of the good news".

They can be synonymous in many contexts but, as Cyrus mentioned, "oblivious to" often has the connotation of being indifferent.

The human beings ought to extol the virtues of the little friends of ours surrounding us. Although it sometimes takes us to forge a friendship with cats, it always pays off with their great magnitude of thankfulness and kindness.
