I don't think it's a "song fact" that Freddie was thinking of football when he wrote it. It's clearly about his own experiences as an aspiring rock musician. He most definitely was NOT tailoring this song for sporting events.

As far as you getting close to 80, it's all you! The vibe is great and this 50 year old white lady loves it when younger people react to the music I grew up on. Dressing like Madonna and listening to hair bands. Lol. Now I hear my music played in the grocery store. Lol. You two are the first channel I check out whenever I log on to youtube. At running the risk of sounding like your moms I'm proud of you and I know you'll go a lot farther than where you are right now. Guaranteed! ❤

I always thought it interesting that 3 songs, that sound nothing alike & were written by 3 different men (1-Freddy, 2-Brian, 3-John), each became iconic sports anthems. It's really a testament to the amazing, individual talents in that group.

  • @pulamusic
    @pulamusic 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

When this tune was still popular and on the radio a lot, it was always paired with "We Will Rock You." You always heard them together like they were two parts of the same track.
Freddie Mercury was an amazingly talented singer and musician, but he is also one of the most legendary rock and roll front men. If you haven't already, check out the Live Aid video. That performance shows his true mastery of working with a crowd. In fact, there's a 53 second clip from the 20+ minute performance titled "EEEEEOOOOOO" that shows it all. In between songs, he led the massive crowd in an extended , complex call-and-response that is just breathtaking.
Guys, in terms of my own musical tastes, I'm an old school blues and jazz fan. I love rock and roll too, and the Beatles will always be my first love, but I've never been a great fan of rock from the 70s and 80s - most of it felt overblown, overwrought, self-important, and kind of dull to me. Queen was one of the exceptions, and my appreciation for their music has only increased as I've gotten older. Some music I look back on and think, "Uh, why did I like this when I was a kid?" or some other similar question. Queen is an example of an artist who, when I look back at, only seems to improve.

No they didn't write it for sports although it lend itself to sport events...It was written by Freddie about their struggle to become successful and the hard work it took to get there.. for example their first record label taking most of their earnings...Brian at first didn't want them to do this song because he thought the critics would think it was arrogant..but Freddie's 'I' was also "we" -all of us who have struggled hard to achieve our goals.

    Freddie said
"I was thinking about football when I wrote it. I wanted a participation song, something the fans could latch on to. It was aimed at the masses; I thought we'd see how they took it. It worked a treat. When we performed it at a private concert in London, the fans actually broke into a football chant between numbers. Of course, I've given it more theatrical subtlety than an ordinary football chant. You know me. I certainly wasn't thinking about the press when I wrote it. I never think about the British music press these days. I suppose it could also be construed as my version of 'I Did It My Way': we have made it, and it certainly wasn't easy. No bed of roses as the song says. And it's still not easy.''
    Brian May said:
''This song is very theatrical. Freddie is very close to his art. I must say, when he first played it for us in the studio, we all fell on the floor with laughter. So many of the people in the press hate us because we've sidestepped them and got where we have without them. But there's no way the song says anything against our audiences. When the song says 'we', it means us and the fans.''

If you wouldn't mind please watch his epicly funny official video called I want to break free it's a spoof of a British soap opera it's supposed to be funny don't try to make anything of it it's just for laughs and they all had a great time making it, keep in mind the theme to this video was not Freddy's idea I'll leave it at that don't do any research just watch it raw and I guarantee you you will definitely enjoy it aside from that, breakthrough is another one and dragon attack are too amazing amazing songs, Queen Alters all their genres all over the place so you cannot ever put them in a box

They wrote We Will Rock You & We Are The Champions to encourage audience participation in the giant stadiums they were p playing.. Brian wrote Rock You & Freddie wrote We Are The Champions.

You should watch the movie “Bohemian Rhapsody” in your off time. Awesome recreation of the Queen rollercoaster.

So long as you keep in mind that the took a LOT of artistic license, and that it is NOT historically accurate. Case in point; Freddie did NOT know he had AIDS before Live Aid.

I get a kick out of the reaction videos of you all with Queen. I was young when these song's were popular and know all the word's to the songs and just think how weird it is that so many didn't know they sang these song's. Then I realize I'm getting older. Sports took over the song's.

Queen, Seven Seas of Rhye... see him and his fast fingers on the piano. Everybody sees it come up after this video, but few actually watch it. It highlights Freddie's piano and theatrical talents.

You two are awesome. I wish we were neighbors, it would be fun. I can "introduce" you to some of the great rock bands of the 1970's: Styx, ELO, Boston, Uriah Heep, Saga, Meat Loaf. I could go on. You two are so much fun to watch. Will talk soon.

It's a very positive message and sometimes music needs that.

Thanks, H& J - this "official video" is great b/c you get to hear the entire intended harmonies! Don't this it was written to be a "sports anthem" - back in the day, Queen albums ran one song right into the next - with, like, no pause - and the lead-in to this was "We will Rock you" -- I think they were writing songs for audience participation - not "sports" - and both of those songs got the audiences involved... which naturally lead to sports fan audiences, with the theme of "power" -- lol
