#48 Firewood Cutting - A huge score of ash, cottonwood, aspen and maple from a farm

- Free firewood! A farmer cut down over 800 trees on his ditch lines and wants it all gone. So I start cutting like a mad man! Ripping big 200 pound rounds down to a manageable size. I go off roading through a field of pudding to get out.

I got a few good spots for getting free wood myself (fairly long drive), but with piles like those I would live there! Awesome find
Last year I cut over 160 face cords (53) full cords of free wood and most of it came from that farm!

I love Ash, it is so nicely straight grained. Splits beautifully, burns great. But it's funny, when you burn it in your wood stove you can see it is aptly named.

A great wood find. I come by locations where lots are being cleared from time to time, but after you get a few loads, someone else joins the party. I've always been a Ford pickup guy, but those Toyotas have an amazing 4wd system, but I do agree that you were wise to stop when you did. Nothing gained by getting stuck. I just found your site yesterday. New subscriber.
Welcome aboard Phil! I had a Ford three trucks ago, my transmission went out at 1,500 miles and again at 18,000 so I kinda didn't trust it anymore after the second time. I've had 2 Chevrolets, a Jeep and a Honda ridgeline. There was good and bad in all but so far my 2015 TUNDRA has 150,000 miles and have only done normal maintenance.... so far! Really impressed you got out at the end,that got soft quickly. I put timbrens on all my trucks they work great and they’ll keep from breaking a spring. They only work when your loaded, I think there right around 215.00 for the rears of most pickups . When your loaded and going fast thru the field is when you’ll snap a spring, and you have to keep momentum or you’ll get stuck.... you’ll feel the truck firm up a lot with a load when you have the timbrens ,especially towing the dump trailer .
Yes, I have been looking at helper leaf springs for the truck to level it better with a load.

Between the log pile I and my tree service frends I am getting lots of wood this winter for next selling season..
Yes it is, all I do is drop off a case of beer to the owner once in a while! How much free wood do get in a year from the tree service?
@@InTheWoodyard : probably about 20 to 25 cords a year maybe more.. My frends definitely keep me stocked on wood..
That is a real honey hole. Could you consider leaving your trailer at the side of the field and use your truck to move it from the pile to your trailer?
Yes it is, I'll be going back to cut there as soon as I get the two truck loads I got delivered to the wood yard, you'll see it soon.

Ya, there is still hundreds of trees that he wants cut down plus the 800 on the ground in piles already. So far I've cut over 100 face cords. You'll see it all in upcoming videos!
I would be an absolute hog heaven if I had that many logs that I could set there and just cut I love running a saw and it's the most relaxing enjoyable thing that I can honestly see to do Man you are lucky person
Just found your channel after looking for some firewood gathering clips. This is crazy... but why you didn't rent a kipper truck and some hands to remove everything in short time to your land? This is overkill to do it alone with a small vehicle. Fantastic channel, just keep on!

OI you need a tractor with a brush grapple. load logs into your trailer. 5 loads a day :)
I am tractor shopping now and it will have a grapple!
@@InTheWoodyard I recommend a tractor over 30HP. With all of that heavy oak you are handling. I wish I had done that when I got mine.

If you could take and put a set of tracks on one trailer or even two trailers then they sell the tracks also for the pickup you would have no problem getting in and out in that muddy ground we used to do that when I was younger because we get into areas that were had there were semi bogs and it worked really well because it gives you a lot of flotation to go over the the wet ground even with a heavy load
Edward, that is a good idea! I waited a bit and it dried up.
I agree with one of the earlier commenter's . Work something out with your wood guy. He has the truck and tongs. Maybe there will be a cold front arrive soon and ground could remain firm for a day. He would probably want shaved logs piled up where he could load them in 10 min. Surely there is someone local that has some type of large truck for hauling you can work something out with
The land owner had three loggers look at it and they all said no thank you, it's to swampy and wet and low value wood. So I asked my logger and he gave me a price and for what I would have to pay for a little bit more I can get premium wood like oak, cherry,maple, hickory, locust. So I just go cut when I have time and space for it. That is the other problem, if I hired someone to cut and haul the wood for me it would all have to be done all at once and I don't have room for it.

I have a new G660 stihl clone w a 28 in. bar that would be perfect for that big wood!

@@InTheWoodyard yes it is. I haven't even used it yet but I bought it to cut a few large ash trees down. I also have a g388 clone of a stihl 380 with a 24 in bar that can actually do the job. Really, the 660 is too much saw for me so I would like to sell it. I know you run big Huskies, but if you know anyone interested please let me know. Thanks

Hi you need a tracked dumper then you can leave your truck on the road I would be worth the hire cost for that amount of wood plus less damage to the field so happy farmer to and you can get them with a crane on so no more heavy lifting
Great idea, but I like to keep my money in my pockets where it belongs instead of buying toys that the bank owns! HA! I'll slowly buy equipment as I NEED it, this firewood thing is a part time thing for me, I do it for exercise and a few extra $$$. Thanks for the idea and watching!

I would set up your splitter there. Less handling of the big stuff in and out of the truck.
Yes I've done that before but I found it"s more productive and easier to split all of the wood right where I'm going to stack it.
I'd pass on cottonwood and willow. Stinky wood in my opinion.
Yes, you are correct, but the price was right (free) and I'm selling it as campfire wood to people who don't care what it is as long as it burns.

Hello Tom, yes I do have a couple of splitters but some of those rounds where between 200-300 pounds and I had to load them in the truck and I did not want another hernia! HA! So I ripped them down to a manageable size. Thanks for watching!
